Just a quick update after the weekend sprint at Golspie. Turned out to be a cracking weekend with the weather holding out and staying dry and warm all weekend. This resulted in a really good 2 days racing. There was a disapointing turn out in A3 with Only Donald in his Evo, Ian MacKay in his Clio and myself. Never the less it was more about progress and a chance to see how the car ran as compared to last year.

The Saturday was the Littleferry circuit and this finished with Donald breaking the class record with a 100.43 run which was pretty impressive. i finished on a 104.23 so under 4 secs behind which is pretty good on the day. This is compared to 118.02 secs last September so a more than fair improvement there although from memory i think last years time may have been in the wet

And one of Donald's Evo in action.

The Sunday was the Kylestrome circuit which is more challenging but to be honest more fun. Again Donald was quickest in class with his fastest run of 74.62 which narrowly missed breaking the record he set in June. I managed a 77.32 which again was only 3 secs off Donald's time so not to bad. But when compared to my time last year of 79.86 shows an improvement of over 5 secs so again a sizeable step forward.

I managed to get some in car footage from Sat but the sound didnt work out but will try and hoste it later.
Well this weekend it's off up north again to Boyndie which again is a kart cct but a lt of fun. I havnt seen the finals yet so not sure exactly who is in A3 but confident it will be a large entry.

Last weekend was the long trip up to Banff for the Boyndie sprint. This was the second trip north in as many weeks but it was the east coast this time but the weather was kind once again with Saturday being warm and sunny and Sunday dry but not just as warm but still very pleasant for this time of year.

The saturday started off with an interesting first practice came of the line and up the main straight car feeling good and pulling well, eased off and braked very early for the first corner, had a little nibble at the kerb and when i turned in wow 270 deg spin there was just no grip at all well at least i wasnt the only one as a few others obviously didnt take note and done exactly the same . As the track heated up and the surface cleaned up the grip came back.

The sat timed runs all went well. I went out and done a time of 68.3 in the first timed run and was sat nicely in 2nd behind Davie Coutts in his EVO on 67.8 and Jim Gray in his Evo on 68.5. I was confident of getting into the 67's on the 2nd timed run when it was pointed out to me that a decent score on Sat and Sun would see me win Class A3 in the Scottish Championship then the game plan changed as I had to score on Sun. I decided to take it easy on the 2nd run and have a look at lines etc for the Sun and just make sure i didnt break anything. After the 2nd timed runs I was pushed down into 3rd behind Jim and Davie which was fine as I had taken 28.23 points from the sat and that was more important.

The Sun morning practice runs were a good opportunity to play around a bit with some of the corners and try cutting various corners to see the effect on the car and on the lines. This proved to be very useful as I went out in the first timed run and done a 67.38 sec run which is 1.2 secs off the class record and significantly faster than last year. More importantly this gave me a healthy 29.15 points and the class win on the day and overall class win in the Scottish Championship - result

Well that was my last event of the year so time now to take stock and try and plan for next year. With all the changes to the class requirements for next year it will be a case of putting weight on rather than taking weight off which just doesnt seem right
I now have the basis of a car that can compete. First new part for next year arrived on Fri

All the class rules have changed and the road car classes have to now conform to full blue book rules. Not a massive issue for me really the only changes for me is I have to put the door cards, centre console, pax seat and rear seats and belts back in so not a massive weight increase considering some of the cars that will now have to move into modified classes so bit of a result really. I will just need to add more power to offest the weight, well more than offest the weight hence the clutch

Question List 1A or 1B for 2010

Arch

Do you have any views on the 1A -v- 1B tyre issues for 2010?

I run Toyo T1Rs (lit 1A) in the "Road Going Over 2000cc Class" and will need to replace these in the new year.

Guidance is less than clear on what we will be able to run in this class.

The debate/arguements are here:

Not much more to report at this stage, its now a process of working out how far I can push the car forward for next year as well as sourcing the parts I need to achieve this. I have managed to source some already so may start stripping some parts off and fitting some others back in

Well thought it was about time to update this thread. I have not really had the time to spend on the car that i had hoped due to working away from home a lot recently.

I have now managed to pick up most of the bits i need for the changes i have planned. The first item was an uprated twin plate Exeedy clutch which will be needed to cope with the extra torque and power i anticipate this year.

Also needed a set of GT Spec headers which i have trial fitted prior to getting reworked at Meercat.

I knew that the gearbox I have used for the last 2 seasons would not cope this year so i have been hunting for a fair while now for a suitable six speed and managed to pick up a Hawkeye Spec D unit. This is fitted now but not wired up to the Neetronics yet but that wont take long. I was surprised at the difference in size of the two boxes but having seen them side by side can now understand why the 6 speeds seem able to reliably cope with decent power levels.

It is not the easiest of boxes to fit with the car on axle stands but with the help of John McG we managed to get it in after a bit of persuasion.
I do have a small issue with the linkage hitting the tunnel but hope that will be resolved when I fit the 6 speed gearbox mount, I had to use the old 5 speed one as a temporary measure but have a new hardrace one now thanks to Bren at Apex

As a result of the 20G I used last year heading off to a new home I have liberated the GT30 from the Rocket - thanks John. This is obviously a rotated fit turbo so needed to get the pipework etc changed to suit this. I had the car booked into Meercat just after Christmas but with problems associated with the weather that had to be postponed until last Monday and Tuesday. I had the car down with Willie and Scott for two days to have the upipe modified to suit the garret, rework the downpipe to suit and plumb in the external wastegate. As well as this I had to change around all intercooler pipework. I cant thank the guys enough the attention to detail and effort put in to ensure the best results possible was superb but having said that Scott has done work on the RA numerous times before and also on the road car so the quality of the work is not a surprise. I have not got many decent pictures of the set up yet but all the pipework has to come back off to have some sort of heat management arranged so will sort ot some pics then.

There is still a fair amount of work to do to get the car ready for mapping but confident it should be ready by the end of the month.

Is that the OMP tow hook your running there? Did you have to modify it to get it to stick out that far (think i can see a extension on the tow hook?)

Just a little thing i spotted there, but I hope your not running the car without the cam guard on... a stone or anything that gets stuck in there and pulls the cam belt off.... bye bye engine

Calculated risk mate
Yes i did have to extend the tow hook to get it to protrude through the fog light cover. I have put a post up on the CDF tow hook GB thread with more info. Its not the OMP one but similar

Nope visit to the opticians not required, I had to mount the twin electric fans that way as I had no room on the other side because of the way I wanted to run the intercooler pipework. So instead of the fans sucking cold air through the radiator I am using my fans to push it through, simply a case of reversing the polarity of the supply and turning the blades round so the pitch of the blades is correct to push the air

Well been out today and removed all the exhaust pipework so it can be sent for ceramic coating.
Not the best pictures of how it turned out but here it is.

Also took a couple of pics of the intercooler pipework, again it will be coming off to be cleaned up and then refitted. Will also check all the interior weld joints to ensure they are smooth and gring flush with a flexi-drive where necessary.

I was going to V-Band the turbo to downpipe joint but decided against it so this may find itself a new home soon

Next up need to remove and swap the rear diffs after the new one has had a tweek. Then its a case of putting it all

cheers Arch, glad it's not my eyes...what's your plan for the turbo layout...you thinking of going front mounted?

The fans I got were either these

12'' UNIVERSAL RADIATOR RAD ELECTRIC FAN UNIT PUSH PULL on eBay (end time 06-Mar-10 18:21:19 GMT)

or I think more likely these

12" SLIM HIGH PERFORMANCE ELECTRIC RADIATOR FAN 12V BN on eBay (end time 10-Feb-10 20:37:22 GMT)

Hope that helps I did have to make a couple of alloy brackets to get them to mount where I wanted.
