Sorry, 84 but ..I am 110% worshipful of JBJ- both voice and body, and would give anything to be his love slave
I'm sat here salivating over this one..

Mainstream singers aren't entirely where it's at, either. You have to mention John Lydon, Joe Strummer, Siouxsie Sioux, Howard Devoto, Thom Yorke etc. They aren't really "singers" but their voices are unique instruments nontheless.

Thom Yorke is... he can sing... the rest are crap though...
Yeah, ok. Go and stand on your lonely hillock if you want to. If you know these singers and you still dismiss them, then you must have a hearing defect.

The fool on the hill eh?? They don't sing - they just shout and proclaim things... that's not singing...
Lots of performers who can't sing well, but suit their material. I always thought Neil Diamond was a poor singer, but I like him a lot. Dylan can't sing for toffee, Van Morrisson too. I spent nearly 3 hours in Finsbury Park and didn't recognise a single word when they both played the Fleadh many years ago, but it was a brilliant night. Shane McGowan is there with them too, a brilliant lyricist and anarchic rebel, which combine to make him an entertaining guy. They may hide their inadequacies behind the words, or the music, or both, or something else, but they still capture your imagination and make you want to listen, unlike Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, whom are fabulously talented singers (sometimes), but are dull, vapid and dreary.
