Another shout out for Smiths in Ongar.

You could try The Queens Head in Fyfield. We've never had a bad meal in there. The only issue is you have to book because its only a small place with limited tables and you'll have no chance if you just turn up.

Failing that, what about the Dick Turpin on the A127 ??

There's also this place:

The Barnes Farm (Miller & Carter) in Chelmsford, Its predominately a steakhouse but do quite a nice range and is middle of the road, looking at about £100 for 3 courses for 2 people

Best Western Rose & Crown Hotel

Both do fantastic food, both have parking, and the rose and crown has rooms if you wanted a night away, its a really old building lovely inside.

Matt, try the bell in Horndon. Nothing to flash. nice food, good service and good atmosphere.

OR, its a bit outside essex, but Venus on the Park, in Mile end, does really nice food. not overly expensive, just right mate..... the steak is LLLUURRVVEELY !!
