Now the HD boxes are only £150 from Sky, is it even worth considering buying one off Ebay?

Simon (P1Fanatic) is right on both counts

We use Tandberg Pro IRDs but there are plenty of considerably cheaper ones out there... Just check with the manufacturer that they will work on Sky without being modified...

I think I may have the answer for you.

I had an issue burning Sky + progs to DVD, nothing would copy except 1,2,3 & 4, when I removed the card I could only view these channels as well. I trawled the internet and found that there were compatibility issues between the old vewing cards and newer boxes. Won't go into the very long story, but the new viewing card fixed the problem and when the card is now removed, I receive all free channels.
