iPhone 3G available to order today
According to Macrumors:
O2's website now states that they have sold out of iPhones and instructs users to come back on July 10th for more information. Based on experiences from individuals in our forums, it appears existing iPhone owners were unable to complete the ordering process.

Chappy on AV Forums gave me this link about iPhone activation. Now, as I'm not in the UK and the page won't display because of this, could someone check the link and ideally post a screenshot of what it says.
I'm told it mentions something about activating at home via iTunes, however, I'm wondering if this relates to the 1st Gen iPhone, rather than the iPhone 3G

How do I activate my iPhone 3G?
Once you've purchased your iPhone and chosen your tariff, you'll need to finish the activation process using iTunes. Before you activate, if you've got contacts, music or photos on your old mobile that you want to keep, transfer them onto your computer. For more information go to Apple - Support - iPhone.
When you're ready to finish activating iPhone 3G there are 3 simple steps:
1. Go to Apple - iTunes - iTunes Overview on your computer, then download and install the latest iTunes.
2. Connect your iPhone to a USB 2.0 port on your computer (but not on your keyboard) using the cable included in the box. iTunes will open automatically.
3. iTunes will guide you through activating and synching stuff like your contacts and podcasts.
Markus, I read a report earlier about Rogers being punished by Apple because of their high tarrif's - Apple are planning on reducing their allocation by all accounts - have you heard anything yourself?

Cheers for posting that. So it looks like you'll be able to use iTunes 7.7 to activate the iPhone at home, handy to know, and does make you wonder why they aren't letting people in the US do this if they are existing AT&T customers, saves a lot of hassle and there WILL be massive queues at AT&T and Apple Stores come the 11th.
As for the Rogers thing, yeah, heard that rumor too, it's apparently come from a source within Rogers. Maybe I'm wrong but all it'll do is make it an even hotter commodity, so those who may have boycotted could think "ooh, not many coming here, I best get one then!"
Regardless, I'm still waiting to hear from Robbers as to what my options are as I'm an existing customer, a good one too, as I have Rogers Cable and Rogers Wireless, and have done since 2003, but I'm not upgrade eligible. Maybe I'll have the info by the 11th, but I doubt it.
I think the launch will go off without a hitch here, they'll sell like hotcakes and all geek moaning will come to nothing. I'd really like this not to be the case and Rogers end up with people protesting outside their stores, and also Apple stores too, and many people, on being told the real cost of the iPhone to them, to not purchase one.

You activate it over iTunes but you have to sign upto the 18 month contract at the point of order with direct debit etc before you get your hands on the phone. So pointless it being able to be unlocked as they already have your details for 18 months of direct debits.
I changed my mind just as I was about to hit the order button. Going to wait to see if a 32gb comes out and see how this model gets on first.

Well, unless you don't want a thicker, less attractive , smaller capacity phone, instead of an Ipod Touch. Not to mention paying money for facilities you don't want, (like you already have a phone).
I'm impressed Apple can get so much excitement about a new phone to sell out before it is released.

Cheers Steve but i've decided not to get one, I was just commenting on the fact I find it absurd something in so much demand has such a limited supply. My current contract is £3 a month with dirt cheap calls and texts as it's company subsidised by a company I stopped working for years ago and the maximum I ever pay is about £15 a month. Putting my sensible head on (for the first time ever when looking at a new toy) I decided i'd be mad to give that up to pay £35 a month for something id' like as opposed to needing. If my ex employer catches up with me and cancels my current contract then i'll look again at getting one.
Correct for the version 1, and no it's not an issue when you have email and youtube available all the time, I'm hoping for more bluetooth features on the next hardware/software version though, playing music wirelessly to my car stereo would be nice.

Anyone know what games are going to be available?
Like the look of Super Monkey Ball
There's also an article in Edge on the game development side of things, and I've heard Nintendo might be porting some DS games for it.

Anyone wonder why the 02 website went down ??
So there you have it....they thought they were ready and had it under control and then all you *******s started ordering one...
O2 has admitted that its online ordering system failed this week - on strength of orders reaching 13,000 per second at points on Monday morning.
In an email to customers, the company sends its apologies to existing iPhone users who tried to take advantage of the company's advance upgrade deal earlier this week. Under the deal, registered iPhone owners were able to contact O2 to place an order for an upgrade, which would be fulfilled on Friday when iPhone 3G ships.
The email carries a host of interesting statistics - not least confirming Apple to have been aware of the level of demand in the UK, while also being able to supply only a "small proportion" of the iPhones O2 thought it needed for the UK market.
"We also used the registration data to keep Apple up to date on the phenomenal interest and to support our orders for the phones with them. We have been working continuously with them to get as much stock for the UK as possible. Unfortunately, they have only been able to supply a small proportion of the number of phones we asked for, because they are launching simultaneously in 22 countries. We are confident that over time we will start to get sufficient volume to meet demand, but it is likely that stock will be in very short supply for some weeks to come."
O2 clarified that its online upgrade offer sold out within hours, stressing the network took as many orders from O2 customers as it did in total from other networks.
On the creaking website, O2 adds:"We had invested heavily to add a huge amount of additional capacity, 250 times its normal rate, and back-up systems. We tested this carefully in advance. The massive simultaneous crush exceeded even our worst case assumptions. Demand was at 13,000 orders per second. Frankly, we have to admit we just weren't prepared for this unprecedented level of demand. No website is."
If you're expecting to pick up an iPhone this Friday, then most O2 and Carphone Warehouse shops will open at 8.02am, (only new contract customers will be able to buy an iPhone 3G at an Apple retail store). iPhones will be sold on a first come first served basis.
Expect shortages, O2 warned: "The amount of devices will vary depending on the store but will be on average a few dozen iPhones in each O2 or CPW store. We are expecting early queues and, like the online site, are expecting to sell out very quickly."
O2 will be receiving deliveries from Apple roughly once a week for the foreseeable future but it will be several weeks before stocks increase.
"We will continue to work closely with Apple to get as much stock as possible for the UK. We will also continue to use the principle of first come first served as stock becomes available for both online and in our stores as we feel that is the best way to be fair and equitable to the many tens of thousands of customers desperate to get one, O2's sales director, Stephen Shurrock explained.

I'm not about to start queuing for one or ringing up every day to see if they've got new stock in, knowing me i'll cancel my contract and not be able to get one for weeks after it runs out, leaving me up **** creak
Where'd you see that? I don't think it's 6GB for $30. I've just seen the following...
While the iPhone 3G Voice and Data Packages allow you to use this device to its fullest and offer savings over separate voice and data plans, they are not the only options available to you. Other pricing options are available. For example, you may choose to combine one of our new data plans ranging from $30 per month (for 300MB) to $100 per month (for 6GB) with a voice plan. Learn More. They are available by calling 1 888 ROGERS1 or by visiting your nearest Rogers retail location.
So that's $30 - $100 *plus* your voice plan. The page also lists this:
Already an existing customer?
If you are an existing customer, you may keep your existing voice service plan and add a separate data plan. To check your upgrade eligibility, please call 1 888 ROGERS1 or visit your nearest Rogers retail location.
That is interesting, and might be what Rogers was on about in their latest reply to me where they said I didn't need to cancel the existing contract, but they did not mention anything about purchasing a data plan.
Either way, they still have not mentioned what the price of the iPhone for existing customers who are not upgrade eligible will be, I'd still have to pay an additional minimum of $30 plus tax above and beyond the $30 I currently pay for my voice service.

Ah... There is meant to be some limited time launch promotion thing for 6GB of data, just seen it on a thread elsewhere and here it is...
Select Rogers Plus stores to open early coast-to-coast on July 11
Launch promotions to include limited time 6GB data offer
TORONTO, July 9 /CNW/ - In anticipation of iPhone 3G launch on July 11,
Rogers Wireless today announced plans to open the doors of select Rogers Plus
retail stores across Canada in advance of regular hours. Starting at 8:00 am
July 11, Canadians will be able to purchase the new iPhone 3G at special
launch day events to be held at six Rogers Plus stores across the country. Be
among the first in Canada to get the next generation iPhone 3G and have the
choice of a 6GB data plan through a limited time promotional price offer.
"As Canada's leading wireless carrier, Rogers is excited to bring iPhone
3G to Canadians even sooner, allowing our customers to be amongst the first in
the world to experience this amazing mobile innovation," says John Boynton,
Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Rogers Wireless. "To
celebrate its launch on Canada's fastest wireless network, we're rolling out
the red carpet with special events at six Rogers Plus stores and a limited
time price promotional data offer from coast-to-coast."
iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G
networking that is twice as fast(*) as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS
for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which
includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of
third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.
Rogers Launch Promotions
------------------------
The following Rogers Plus stores in these cities will open their doors at
8:00 a.m. (all times local) on Friday, July 11 for advance purchases of the
Apple iPhone 3G:
Toronto: 112-10 Dundas Street East
Montreal: 1015 rue St. Catherine Ouest
Ottawa: 690 Bank Street

Effective July 11, and as a limited time promotional offer for customers
who activate by August 31 on a three year contract, a data-only offering of
6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be added to any
in-market voice plan. For example, with 6GB of data, iPhone 3G users can visit
35,952 web pages, or send and receive 157,286 emails, or watch 6,292 minutes
of YouTube videos each and every month.(xx)
New Canadian iPhone 3G customers will also have the choice to select from
Rogers Wireless' existing voice and smartphone data plans and/or additional
features to best suit their needs, or from Rogers Wireless' value bundled
plans specifically for iPhone 3G. Existing Rogers Wireless customers can keep
their current voice service plan and select a separate data plan to meet their
needs or choose from other plans after checking their individual upgrade
eligibility.
Starting July 11, iPhone 3G will be available at participating locations
across Canada, including select Rogers Plus, Rogers Video, and Rogers Wireless
retail locations and at the following specially selected authorized Rogers
Wireless dealers: WirelessWave, TBooth and Wireless etc. iPhone 3G can also be
purchased online at Rogers Communications - Wireless, Digital Cable TV, Hi-Speed Internet, Home Phone and through Rogers' customer service at
1-888-764-3771. For a complete store listing, visit
Rogers Store Locator. Due to anticipated high demand, there
is a maximum purchase of two iPhone 3G per customer.
(*) Based on 3G and EDGE testing. Actual speeds may vary due to a variety
of factors.

Still some questions though:
1) What's the price of the iPhone using this plan
2) Is visual voicemail included, if not, how much
3) What does the limited time offer mean, that until Aug 31st they'll offer this deal, or, does it mean that after then you'll be charged $100 a month, rather than $30 a month for it.
