Sorry missed that bit. To enthraulled in beating clio's, novas, saxo's etc around Essex. To add to the point about lardy new ages though. They are fitted with better springs, shocks and brakes. The new lardy wrx sti manage to lap the top gear test track in 1.28. I add the heaviest yet. But look at the list of cars it beat.

I had a Uk 2000 scooby classic a few years back, my mate had a 182, his was factory standard and mine had an exhaust and filter swop, my car would kill hiss every time, but he does drive a bit girly
When I've gone up against him in my last evo 6 and my current Sti type r he's nowhere to be seen.
I don't care if a Clio sport was faster, cause I don't like them they are the sort of car my Mrs would drive if she had no taste, I'd rather have a scooby every day.
What annoys my mate is if yo call his car a CL ten as the badge looks like CL10.
Try this pic, it somes the clio up properly.

I test drove a Clio Cup about 3 years ago, was thinking of chopping my scoobie in for it to save fuels costs at the time (oh the irony, now I look back at how cheap petrol was then).
Anyhow, needless to say i didn't swap the scoob. The Clio felt cheap, tinny, and slow. Driving position too high. Hated the interior. All in all, a 'girl's car' IMHO

I came very close to buying a clio 172 instead of my Impreza but the clio was sold before I got there so I ended up with the Subaru - I'm pleased I did though.
I did a lot of research on the Clio sports before purchasing and I rate it as one of the best value for money performance cars around. £3000 will get you a failry low mileage Phase 1 clio 172 (the quickest one) which has air con and alcantara seats. For not a lot more you could have a Phase 2 clio 172 / 172 cup. With a decatted exhaust, remap and a decent air filter you'd have about 190 - 200bhp. This is in a car which weighs only 1050kg.
The clio sport was actually developed by Mecachrome who are the engineering team resposible for Renault F1. They heavily modified the 2.0 engine not too dissimilar from the Clio Williams engine. Even standard clio 172's do 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and 0-100 in around 17 seconds which isn't too far off the figures for a standard WRX. The Clio might not be as quick off the line but it will keep up. It is also said to be one of the best handling front wheel drive cars around. Have a look on youtube and you'll be very surprised seeing them keeping up with a lot more powerful cars.
A clio 172 may keep up with standard Impreza Turbos or on a dry, smooth track. However, as most owners modify their Imprezas which can yield massive improvements in power, a clio 172 is unlikely going to keep up with a tuned Impreza Turbo or even a standard one on its spiritual ground - a damp B Road.

Straight line, both just hitting the limiter in every gear!
The truth is regradless of age of car its all down to *****, you've either got em or not.
I still feel the Clio is a better balanced car out the box, the scoob is woolly be it a 95 or an 05 compared, but you cant fight the weight around the corners.

The driving style is a much better method of delivering maximum perfromance. Look at some of the times with the celeb's on TG. The one that look slow and neat are normally the fastest times.
Most sports performance cars have "change indicators" when it time to change up. Banging on the limiter all the time will certainly **** the engine in the end!

You can't make a generalisation like that. Mines standard and it just wouldn't (MY97 280ps model). Theres also no way you can compare a wrx to a turbo 2000. Clio's are fast little cars, I like them and used to own a modded valver and my mate had a 182. Bang for buck you cant beat them. The whole argument centres on what model wrx i.e Late model classic with 280ps or a lardy uk wrx bug eye with 218 bhp

fact remains the clio is a shopping car, no matter what you do to it. which you rather be seen in eh ? and to the average joe- they will always think the clio is just a shopping car- no matter what. the scooby does what it says on the tin !

There is simply NO WAY either of these cars will "embarrass" the other at that level. You need a much bigger difference in performance than exists between these two as std to achieve that feat.
Having driven both a std classic will nudge it in the dry and be demonstrably superior in the wet. A stage one tuned classic will walk away from a Clio. A stage two tuned classic will destroy it (from experience).

My best mate has a clio 172 and I can embaress him from the get go. He's as good, (or bad), a driver as me and openly admits I hand his *** to him on a plate.
My scoob is a 95 WRX with 3" exhaust system and de-cat and an air filter, rolling roaded at 271BHP, his clio has and exhaust and air filter. Straight line or twisties, whatever the condition I beat him everytime and tbh his clio is a quick one. It surprised me how many things he can embaress yet it's not a patch on my scooby.
Credit where it's due though, although french, the clio 172 is a good piece of kit.

I'm still proud to be seen in my classic. Similar feeling you get to when driving a Cossie. You get the odd "plonker" remarks/looks, but everyone who knows anything about affordable performance cars knows that you're in something of an icon.
I especially love the sly looks you get from people admiring the car, who don't want to admit publicly they like it!

NS04 - you sir, talk an awful lot of sense on this forum.
I particularly like the 'I especially love the sly looks you get from people admiring the car, who don't want to admit publicly they like it!' comment.
I also know this to be true.

Then the Scooby wasn't trying.

Was we not comparing std cars?
On a different note my PUG 1.6gti rally car was held up by a grp n scoob on stage around the twisties, so what does that prove?
The only true comparison is on track, against a clock imho.
I think my scoob is an awesome bit of kit, but it is so easy to drive. In fact i was shocked how easy it is to hold a slide and drift at silly speeds.
Remember its about the twisties, long straights where is the fun in that?

I have been told subaru's are alot more fun, I have a mate who has the Civic Type R after owning a Subaru 2000 uk edition and says he would love to have the scooby back, but does not miss the running costs. What is it that make scoobies such fun then? as I have never owned a hot hatch

IMO there is no comparison!
And its not just some comment. Although I am comparing to the Turbo 2000!
I have had a 2004 full fat Clio 182 prior to the scooby I drive now and my mate has a 172 cup while my other mate has a Megane 230 F1.
The Renaults have no contest! My scooby wins all day long! Those little clios have no grip in the corners and the Meganes although nice are still not quicker.

i had a full fat 172 very fast little cars, handle well & good running costs bonus but like said everytime i used to sit in it felt like i was off to perm someones hair, got my subaru now & would never look back but to the people that cant afford one i would strongly recommend a clio sport for the money

There is simply no way a std Clio will "embarass" a std UK Turbo. Driver skill/familarity with road/disregard for license cucial factors An average driver will be significantly quicker in the Scooby (4wd security and traction) a good driver will still be quicker in the Scooby, but the margin will be reduced (scooby still has big traction advantage) Clio a sweet handling car, but the Turbo 2000, contrary to what some might say is no slouch: light and nimble and actually quite throttle adjustable.
Min runs 340bhp and the std suspension copes fine which should speak volumes about the quality of the set up as std.
You need BIG differences in ability between cars for one to embarass the other and I respectfully contest that does not exsist between a std UK turbo and Clio.
If a scooby held you up on a track in a Pug Rally car (and I think the rally bit may explain the difference to some extent ) you were simply the better driver/knew the course better.
I saw a std UK turbo give a porsche 911 a very hard time around brands. Driver ability/knowledge can make up for a lot!
A race instructor in a 1.3 would give novices in MUCH more powerful cars a BIG fright.
Driver ability 1st car ability 2nd in terms of effect on performance on a track/road IMHO

I have had many hot hatches before I had my Imprezas (on my 2nd), and would never go back. No comparison.
Its not just about power, its everything.
I was trying to describe owning/driving an Impreza to someone yesterday. I ended up comparing the experience to owning/riding a motorbike. A ride on a bike (in the dry at least) is not just getting from A to B - its an experience, hugely enjoyable most of the time.
Same in the scoob - I enjoy every journey, everything about it. The sound/handling/power/grip etc. etc.
Also, I think mine looks pretty good too, inside and out - subtle mods do it for me.
You just can't compare them IMHO.
