What anti-freeze should I be using in the impreza? I'v just bunged some blue stuff in at the moment but there seems to be varying opinions on what to use?

Thanks for your advice!!!

I drive a 2003/4 Wrx Sti Type Uk running approximately 330bhp. My car is due a service. It's used daily but does minimal mileage. It's currently got 5w 30 fully synthetic in it. The car doesn't get driven hard and I'm think of changing to 5w 40. What engine, gearbox and rear diff oils do people recommend aswell as spark plugs?

Hi there

I've a 97 sti import which is completely standard apart from exhaust. I recently had the laborious job of replacing the head gaskets. I brought my car to rally/subaru specialist who regularly competed in the circuit of Ireland rally - when it was running over here. I, like you, do minimal miles in my car in fact I use it at weekends mainly. When the mechanic repairing my car was servicing the engine for me he recommended millers 10w50 fully synthetic oil be used. That's what I'm running my car on now. I think with the mods on your car you might need to run similar. I'm only new to this forum so others might know better than me but that's what was recommended to me. Hope this helps mate

In that case the best coolants are the Motul Inugel Optimal or Fuchs Pro Cool, but the Fuchs ESK, Millers Alpine, Castrol Radicool and Gulf are all fine as cheaper alternatives.

Hi

A 5w-40 synthetic is ideal for the engine.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Gulf Formula G, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Motul Gear 300 is the best option for the gearbox.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-899-motu...ter-based.aspx

In the diff, go for the Motul 90PA, Fuchs Race Gear 90LS or Shell TS90.

Cheers

Many thanks mate! How much of each would I need? I think I might use these aswell as the Motul Gear 300 for the gearbox.

Those are all good choices.

The engine takes 5L, you'll need 4 bottles of the Gear 300 and 800ml of the diff oil.

Cheers

Like most STis , a 5w-40 is the best option.

Hi oilman

I have a 2002 bug eye sti ppp. Road use only. I am currently using 10-50 Fuchs/silkolene, would I benefit dropping to the 40 or stick with the 50? 80k on the clock and has never used any oil.

Also I have Motul gear 300 in the box and diff, does the rear diff require different oil or is this ok?

Cheers

Hi

A 10w-50 is ideal for both of those.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car.

Cheers

Hi

Unless it's heavily modified, a 5w-40 is a better choice

The Gear 300 is ideal for the gearbox, but go for the Fuchs Gear 90LS, Motul 90PA or Shell TS90 for the diff.

Hi

No, not really, the Magnatec is a bit too good to allow proper running in. This is a much better choice.

Although based on the fact that when the oil gets to 100-120 the pressure drops to below 1.0, wouldnt a high grade be better to keep the oil thicker at higher temps?

I assume the 50 is too thin at those temps so wouldnt a 60 grade be better and therefore go for a 10W-60?

Hi

Seems odd that the pressure is dropping off like that. I was a bit surprised that the oil was getting that hot anyway, so I'm wondering if there is something that is slowing the oil flow for some reason, which will push the temps up and lower the pressure.

Cheers

If oil flow is a cause of that, then could this be a sign the oil pump is on its way out?

Maybe I should be considering an uprated RCM oil pump...

Hi oilman, i have a modded 2004 wrx, im looking at doing an oil change this week before the winter comes, the car is a daily driver, in the past ive been using 5w30 comma xtech fully synthetic, the car is sitting at 280bhp with 95,000 on the clock, should i be looking at using a thicker oil, a semi synthetic, a combination of the two or am i fine sticking to what ive been using? My car uses about 1ltr of oil every 1000 miles or so.

Hi

A 5w-40 will reduce/stop the oil consumption and offer plenty of protection.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

At the very least, it could be the bolts have worked loose - a common issue.

Worth checking for...

im due an oil change but have a local trackday coming up, i have been using millers cfs 10w40 recently and just bought another can recently before i decided on track day so probably need to exchange that but nor sure how that will hold up on track, my mapper recommended i should go for 10w50 but i can only get cfs 10w60 locally, is the 10w60 ok for track use? seeing normal oil temps of about 100-105 i think on the 10w40

The CFS 10w-40 is fine for up to 130C, so fine for track use. You can swap it for 10w-50, but 10w-40 would be my choice with that kind of temps.

Cheers
