Yes, get an oil cooler. Before your next trackday.
Oilman replied to you saying a good oil is fine up to 150C, but that's based purely on the spec for a virgin oil ie. freshly changed before the trackday. The reality is that you get fuel dilution on an Impreza, especially a tuned one, which degrades the viscosity of the oil and impairs its high temperature performance. This is because the fuelling is a little uneven between cylinders, so the mapper makes it safe across the board. The result is that the fuel consumption isn't great and the oil suffers fuel dilution over time. In addition to fuel dilution, oil loses its viscosity with use due to shear forces in the engine.
Ok, here are a couple of real examples from a 360bhp classic with an oil cooler (max temp 100C). I had Millers analyze 2 oil samples. First up, Motul 300V 15W50 which had done 2-3k road miles plus 1 trackday (approx 100 miles on track). This was down to 79% of the viscosity on the spec sheet for virgin oil. Second was Millers CFS 10W60 after 2-3k road miles plus 2 trackdays (approx 200 miles on track). That was down to 75% of spec sheet viscosity. Millers tech guy deemed both viscosities to be "on the very low end of what is acceptable".
In case you're wondering why I did the oil analysis, previously I blew the big-end bearings on a trackday. The damage was almost certainly due to a combination of high temperature and slightly too old oil: 130C peak (this was before I got the oil cooler fitted), on CFS 10W60 which had done 4k road miles plus 1 previous trackday. Previously I had kept to 3k road miles with a max of 2 trackdays, but on that occasion I slipped up and paid the price. After the engine rebuild, and oil cooler install at the same time, I was keen to see how soon the oil degraded with use. The answer is that, in my engine at least, the oil viscosity is almost exhausted after 2-3k road miles and a max of 2 trackdays.

I usually change my oil every 5k miles with a quality fully synthetic oil and usually time the change to be just before a track day ..
As I say .. I normally 'bug out' when oil hits about 125 degrees .. and tbh .. I could easily change the way I drive in order to keep the temps down .. and indeed am considering doing so anyway as the car is now at 90k miles too .. so the risk of a failure is increasing I suspect despite being fully maintained etc
I am seriously considering an oil cooler .. but .. I'm also wondering whether it will be time to sell the car on next year as I've had it from new, all fully serviced and modded harmoniously, and I've had great fun out of it, but I'm also getting to that age when I want a little more comfort .. so the bottom line is a question of whether to simply make my next track day at Brands on the 14th a little less revy .. and let someone else add an oil cooler and catch can as their 1st upgrade if they want to do tracks .. otherwise I am not convinced they are required for day to day driving - which is 98% of its current use.
So .. I am still dithering on it - although I am getting quotes for the work. Certainly if I was 100% sure on keeping the car and doing more track days, then I would upgrade as you suggest

I have been reading this thread very useful info here.
I have a 03 reg wrx sti type uk 6speed box standard, I realise i need 75w-90 but which, i want to crisp-en up the gear changes from cold as changing down in to 2nd and 1st can be a bit notchy. I was told about redline shock proof, is it this:

Also which syntrax the universal or the longlife.
Does my vehicle have any form of limited slip diff, i assume the rear diff takes same grade.

The Shockproof oils are fine with synchros, we've never come across anyone who has had a problem with the Shockproof in a synhcro gearbox, and we sell loads of it. If you're having cold shift problems, the Shockproof wouldn't be my choice as it's a little thicker than standard stuff due to the way it works. I think I would go for the Motul Gear 300 as it always seems to work well in an Impreza.

That's fine for the diff too. It does have a LSD, but it doesn't need a LS specific oil.
If you want Castrol, it's the Syntrax Universal, although that is a couple of steps down in quality from the Gear 300.

Is it not just a better idea to go with 5w40 then for extra protection? Or is there disadvantages to this over 5w30? How much diffrence is there between the 2?

There might be a little difference, there might be more. Oil viscosity is not an exact point, it's a band so you can have a thick 5w-30 and a thin 5w-30. That means that a 5w-30 can be almost the same in viscosity as a 5w-40 and there is no harm in using either in your car.

Thanks for your reply oilman.
I just checked the dipstick for the gear oil after a run it was just above the Low mark the car was slightly leaning to the Offside, i am wondering if a top up would help, i think i would rather change it, but if i did top up how much would it take to bring it up to full, and i have read about slightly over filling can help?

I have just ordered 5 Liters of the Motul 300 75w-90 that you recommended, you have it at a very good price and with 1pound delivery, demon tweeks have it at over 20quid a liter.
looking forward to getting it changed are there any washers i need?

Just got myself a 53 plate wrx sti. 65000 miles totally standard except cat back. Massive service history but don't know what oil was last used before I bought it on service. Is castrol edge 5w 30 ok to use to top up if needed before next service at all. Thankyou. Glen

Currently standard, but might possibly do a basic remap in the next year or so.
Currently it is my daily driver covering 44 miles a day. Might soon become only used for shopping trips and weekends. Not really driven mega hard but is used properly
Looking for good quality engine and gearbox oil recommendations, price isn't really an isssue just after good quality that will help the engine as much as possible.
Currently standard, but might possibly do a basic remap in the next year or so.

Subaru say 5w/30 but most people on here tend to use 10w/30 or 10w/40.
I'm getting Subaru to service my impreza soon - I'm already wondering what oil they'll use.
Obviously fully synthetic is better than semi/synth. If money us no option I'd go Mobil one or the top gold castrol cos then you can't go wrong. I hear things about millers but yank oils just aren't the same in my humble opinion

If you were pushed to choose an engine one and gearbox one for the top quality ones you recommended, which would you choose? As I haven't really heard of these brands until recently so still not sure which to choose out of those.

I really hate that question, I'd probably go for the Fuchs Pro S, Millers CFS or Gulf Competition as they are better value than the other options for the engine, while still being top quality. I'd use the Motul Gear 300 in the gearbox, it always seems to work well in Imprezas.

I have a virtually standard bar exhaust full decat ,dump valve 1995 Wrx sti 555 v limited roof vent model .
I bought it recently runs great however it must have had a minor oil leak turbo side ie smell of burning oil little smoke which I guess will be rocker gasket hopefully .
I just changed the oil two days ago and have had symptoms worse than before .
I have just used shell helix ultra 5w40 fully synth oil is this ok or too thin for my classic ?
Or will it be ok if I track down leak?
I noticed a small spill on garage floor and a bit on lower exhaust heatshield which will burn of worse than before .
Any advice will be great

sounds like potentially OS rocker gasket leak which is fairly common due to the heat off the turbo...............
personally wouldn't use 5w oil in a classic, 10w min................

The engine runs very smoothly and sounds pretty quite for a classic on tick over .
I will fix gasket leak and run it with the 5 w 40 shell helix ultra and see how I get on would be a shame to drop it and waste it after only such a short time .
I also have a classic 1995 wrx v2 which has done more miles and will be due a service soon I take it the 10w 40 will be better for that one maybe also ?or is there any suited for higher mileage engine it has just done over 100k miles ?
My other one the Sti 555 v2 has under 60k miles which is pretty low for year .
This oil thing is a real science and takes a bit to grasp .
I know synthetic was not around when my cars were made but has better qualities generally
I just want to keep my babies in good health and use them both responsibly but need to know they are covered as best as possb

The engine runs very smoothly and sounds pretty quite for a classic on tick over .
