Funnily enough S88 I've got a great stack of Mk1 parts stashed in my garage and loft (including a complete steel cranked 1.6 motor) on the off chance that I eventually acquire another

I'm having to put up with a Mk2 16V for the moment though, life's a bitch at times

Fully agree on the build quality thing too, sadly the shoddy (sorry efficient ) practices started to take root in the late Mk2s the Mk3s were a joke

The run-a-round is a MKIII GTI and to be honest I think it is ok..... I never bought it for speed etc but just as an a-b car.....

Intend to do this myself too one day as the Mk1 is still a great looking car. As you say, put a cracking engine in it & it will still be up there on pace with current machinery.

Well played!

TX.

PS

I bought a Mk1 back in 1992 for £1400 & sold it on in 1993 for £1200 ... they probably cost more than that today

As an aside, us car nuts may well all go down the road of buying an older car & doing it up as it will avoid the Govts dreaded car tax escalator. They may well alter it in the future to pick up on such "avoidance" however at least we can still enjoy our cars (this way) without the old wallet being too damaged at the moment.

I don't need to go down that route TX

The newest car I own is my '92 GTi 16v, the 'spare' car is an '86 XR4x4, which is definitely old enough to dodge the escalator

They'll get us all in the end though as your 1992 car won't last forever Or your 1986 one for that matter
