GTA IV First impressions
i have now completed about 12% of the game when do you get access to the other islands? have to say the game is slightly getting a bit more interesting now although i still think it is extremely overrated.
Without side missions then approx 15%, altho side missions only account for a small % so 15-16 should unlock it.
I unlocked one of the other islands last night and finally got my hands on a helicopter at the helicopter tours bit, had a comedy moment where i lost the back half of my chopper and had no control left at all. The view from up there is amazing though, still carn't find any more choppers though, i've searched all the helipads i can find but there's none there, i'm guessing they become available later.

Done all the bridges
I was a bit dissapointed when I landed the chopper in the parking zone outside the safehouse, only to find it gone when I came back out though...

getting worried that the random character's achievment isnt going to unlock.
AFAIK I've done them all except 1 that isnt supposed to count (Cherise? Dwayne's Ex) you don't have to do all their missions do you, just meet them. Only other one I'm short of is Jeff and I didn't think he was obligatory either...

From what i've read aslong as you talk to them first you can just kill them, however the missions are pretty quick so maybe worth doing anyways, i think theres 11 out of 14 that you need.
Failing to get the random characters will also prevent the key from the city to unlock.
As for the pigeons, ign have a good detailed map (powered by google maps for great zoom) with overlays of points of interests, locations, pigeons etc.
I got Stevies 30 txt cars lastnight, took forever.

Is keys to the city the 100% achievement?
hope not - not much point in me getting the rest of the flying rats etc otherwise...
I can't get Jeff - he's unlocked by completing Photo Shoot but I've bypassed it as I took a different story path and killed Dwayne... think I also killed Ivan. AFAIK, there are 4 randoms that don't count towards the 100% Cherise & Ivan were 2 (as its possible you could have killed them earlier) hope Jeff is another.
I'll probably replay at some point to go for the 30 hours thing so can do randoms then, but was hoping to do the majority of stuff on the first play - if not, I might as well start again now...

Annihilator is also in Algonquin - I've seen it in the startegy guide but dodn't know if its linked to the pigeons...
If you are still under 30 hours go straight for the mission end and then do the rest of the stuff after, failing that, havent you got any saves you can go back on, they give you plenty of save slots, as with any rpg make use of key save points.

got a bit bored doing all the taxi-ing missions so went looking for stunt jumps, pigeons and assination targets...
Still a few missions to go yet, but your not that far off, i want to have a bash on it now but it's far to hot to play ps3 in my house at the minute, and as the game is so dark it's pointless playing while the sun is out because i carn't see a god damn thing.

I found it a bit too dark also - you can alter it in options though...

I'm really enjoying GTA4 however, It's starting to look likely that the following things are missing from it:
* No chopper that fires rockets
* No planes
* No tanks
* No jetpacks, hand gliders, bmx's, etc.
I can live without some of that stuff but not being able to rampage firing rockets from a chopper or better yet a tank is a serious oversight IMHO. Why the **** did they take that away in this version?
they also come in handy when you need a aeroplane to fly to another locked island
One thing i've noticed if one of your friends rings you and asks if you want to go for a drink or whatever and you can't be arsed, accept it then ring them back and cancel you don't lose any respect from them
oh dear, go rob a police car you get a shotgun with 10 shells. Shoot a couple of bikers and then you can rob their shooters,
