I think the graphics are great, when you think what its doing, its about as much as you can reasonably expect.

It is just business as usual for the GTA series but why mess with the formula too much, if you want to do a life sim, get the Sims !

To me it seems grittier and more real which I like.

Yup fair point - i mean it is rendering a city, plus the internals of buildings all in one hit - there is zero loading switching between cars, locations etc.

I just want to kill random people. If it lets me do that, then I am happy.

edit: I loved Crackdown, thought it was very underrated.
I have to say I didnt think much of crackdown, was great to start with but within 2 weeks (not constant playing) my character was fully levelled up and there was no bosses left so got bored. Really liked jumping off high buildings and the vehicles upgraded were cool tho.
The problem i feel about the new consoles(360 and PS3) is that if your not able to get online, the majority of games have no depth to them and run out of things to do.

Dying to get a line and broadband in my place so i can get xbox live, just cant afford it at the mo.

My bro should be taking up a copy of GTA IV this weekend for me to have a shot so will see how good/bad it is.
I loved all the previous GTA games, I thought 2 was one of the best as it was the first with gang warfare but nowadays it is very poor as it was only on the ps1.
VC was played to death and SA was a bit too spacious.

lol Saxo, you want to rape women, kill OAPs, decapitate bikers and be a terrorist?
That's about the long and short of it

Re: graphics....I think they are a little disappointing as well. Yes everything looks very polished but there is still some bad pop up and when I took the helicopter it basically fails to render anything meaningful once you are over about 10 feet off the ground. You don't have to go very high before it doesn't even bother with cars and people making the city look completely empty and making it very difficult to mow people down with helicopter fire!

i thought the graphics were awesome, until i crashed my car at night and i could not see anything, then i had to turn the contrast up in the game settings to make everything brighter, and the gfx then seamed to look a bit sketchy (i prefere the blacks, black, not grey, but when you cant see anything at all?? you gotta tweak )

still not convinced on the left stick moving the view around when turning, feels bit wierd, will probably get used to it, would be nice to switch it off

also felt i got ripped off withy my lapdance, no wanking allowed

I had a "what am i doing with myself" type epiphany at 3 am this morning as I "tried out" the various lapdancers at the triangle bar bada-bing style place.

How do you pick up hookers this time round? I'm beeping my horn (fnar fnar) etc and they're just not getting in, even with a decent car?

I'm about 10% in now and would agree it's an evolution rather than being as world-shattering as the reviews suggest.. Still great fun though.

Just a quick word re graphics...

those pixel counters have been at it again and the 360 runs at 720p and the PS3 at "only" 640p.

but some people have said the PS3 looks better despite its lower res.

Not wanting to start anymore fanboy arguments but what I've been reading so far is fairly technical stuff from mainly 3D artists who appear impartial to the whole console war and are comparing the game on a "hardware" level- aparently a lot of the difference is to do with how two consoles work their anti-aliasing & lighting magic, by all accounts the PS3's nVidia graphics are way ahead of the 360's ATI graphics and Rockstar preferred the PS3 system (remember that GTA4 was originally a PS3 exclusive).

All on Beyond3D forums if anyone's interested... or has insomnia...

if they prefer the ps3, why is it running a lower screen res?

same here - it's all very dark even after messing with the in-game settings.

even worse, I'm struggling to hear the radio stations without turning it up so loud it then makes you jump when he answers the phone or whatever. (xbox optical out through a surround sound 5 speaker system - have messed with the in-game settings but seems to make no difference). shame as the radio stations were cool in previous games (very funny, great music etc).

the sat-nav is useful but it does take away the need to learn the city - which is a shame as finding your way around was always part of the fun. I loved Vice City - and San Andreas was nearly as good but great for different reasons (the scale, the ability to fly jets, the differing terrain, the military hardware etc). Even the original 2d GTA on the PC had tanks in the city - surely there's one somewhere???

I've played it for about 3 hours so far - the game doesn't feel anywhere near as open ended as I was hoping, and the city feels a bit constrained and frustrating the way you have to go up and down the overpasses etc to get around. ah well .... more play required....

G

(ps how easy is the darts!!!! 180 first go. poor)

well i took my woman out for the 3rd date, lost interest as i had humped her on the second (slag)

decided to take her to the strip club for a laugh, don't think she liked it very much, all the strippers avoided me so i could not get a lap dance (wanted to see what "michelle" would say about it pmsl)

anyway things ended up with me fighting security again

in the end they were ganging up on me so i legged it outside and left michelle inside lol

jumping in the car to make my escape, i reversed it back for a J-turn and promptly knocked michelle over good and proper and now shes "making her own way home" LMAO

also got the 6 wanted level for 5 mins achievement, complete doddle if you hide on the train line

I played it for several hours yesterday and did the usual experiments with the game play. Follow the script, run amok, swin to other islands etc.

TBH its pretty much what I expected. Its set in city not unlike New York so its a dark moody place (like NY).

as for increasing bike car running skills etc. That stuff was just a hassle SA. Fun and novel at first but a pain in the **** if you corrupted the game file (which I did) and had to start the game all over again.

In short the game feels like a refined GTA3 which methinks is what they set out to achieve.

Ok It ain't brilliant but what ever is?

Yeah but most reviews are giving it like 97%+. WTF! Anything over 95% should be as perfect a game as can reasonably be expected. In other words you should want for nothing whilst play it that could be reasonably provided with the technology of the time. This new GTA seems to fall quite short of that in that it is defo not the perfect game. So far I'm thinking about 85% - very good game that has a few elements missing.

I haven't played enough of it to come to a deifnite conclusion _ but some of the scores it has been given do seem to somewhay overstate the achievement. I mean it is very very good - but not *that* good.

However, let's not forget, this is Take two we are dealing with. The company that insists on very high scores in return for exclusives and future advertising.

It famously did it with GTA - Guarantee of at least 94% and double page review or you don't get the review copy - Meaning you review it a month later that everyone else.
