As an example....my grandpas Corolla....2 years old, 9k miles on the clock. He folded down the rear seats and used it for carrying his hairy alsation about. I inherited the car and look at the state of it.....
I lifted one half of the rear seat to see what it was like underneath...

It stank like nothing you could imagine and took me two whole days just to clean all the hair from the boot and rear seats.
LOL

seen that kind of thing far to many times, also had people arguing with me when we explain they will have to pay an extra removal charge for cleaning

"its a rip off if you want to charge extra for dog hair"

btw this is BEFORE we actually start the car

50% of the time they will begrudgingly pay the charge for us to remove the dog hair, then come to pick it up with the feckin dog on a lead, who jumps back into the car

I agree with J4CKO on this. It was very difficult to even own a car in my early days of motoring and when I did get one it was pretty precious to me. I feel it is worth looking after them because I prefer to have a decent looking machine and it does keep the resale value up I have found. It is even worth shoving some Waxoyl on the underneath, really makes them last for a cheap outlay too. I treated my 'bikes the same way too, and my old Bonneville is kept polished and clean also.

Mine is purely a tool for work, and I do approx 1000 miles a week in it. Bearing in mind if I wash it, it will look like crap within 24hrs anyway, and with the mileage I'm doing it'll be worth nothing in 2 years anyway - no matter how clean it is.

It gets serviced on the dot though (about every 3 months! ), and I regularly check the fluids/tyres etc. But as far as cosmetics go, it gets a £2 carwash every week or so and that's it.

Like sti-04, my time is worth too much now to waste an entire saturday cleaning and polishing.

is that in the p1? or a rusty work hack?

if it is in the p1, why buy a limited edition car to use as a work hack and take no pride in its appearance. if you dont use the p1 as a work hack, please ignore above comments.

I went out yesterday and gave mine a good cleaning, on my hands and knees doing the wheels, wiped the interiors down, cleaned round the shut lines, some tyre foam and they both look great, mine doesn't really get filthy but the wife's Galaxy has the kids in, they get in with muddy feet, stand on the seats then eat a picnic and as J4ckos mate says "because they might starve to death on the two mile trip from school". I just think about how much money we paid for the cars and how long it took us to earn, I enjoy my car more when its clean and I know how many otherwise decent cars I have bought for peanuts just because people are too lazy to clean them and sell them themselves.

Even if I win the lottery, I will still clean my cars myself, in fact it will be a full time job by the time I have finished spending

I struggle with paying for a car was, five quid for something I can do myself for pretty much free, and I do a better job than a load of Latvians in a hurry, amazes me a well when people say they are skint yet paying for a car wash is essential, or saying how it saves time, by the time you have got there, waited in line, been washed and paid you could have done it yourself !

I always look after my cars. It pains me to see them dirty or have any marks/scuffs/scratches! I get really depressed and have to get it sorted! I rarely put anything in the boot if I can help it. Avoid taking passengers and avoid bad weather lol. Not much point in having a car you say?!

I cant understand people who say it gets me from A to B. They jump in, abuse it, bounce it off curbs park anywhere and not a care in the world! Sometimes I wish I was one of those people though, it would be a lot easier!!!

I'm past worrying about my cars, they get serviced regulary and on time, but like others say, my times to valuable, to be cleaning them myself, get someone else to do it, and if it dos'nt get done, it's only me who's losing out, if i choose to wreck my car, it's my money, i'm not forceing anyone to buy it of me when i get bored with it and decide to change them, if you spend all day worrying about where to park or when to wash it next, buy an old **** heap, and don't worry about what happens to it.

I dont worry about them, if they get damaged, they get fixed, OK, I prefer not to leave them somewhere iffy but if I have to I will, at the end of the day, its only a car but I will do what I can without being **** about it to avoid it getting ruined.

As for time being valuable, go and wash your car, rather than sitting on here talking about it, and its activity, in the fresh air, on a nice day its a pleasure and part of my weekend routine, I use it along with the mowing and other jobs to work up a thirst to justify some Beer as reward !

They are also the same type of people who refer to something like an Astra 1.4 as being sporty, likewise they have little to no mechanical knowledge and need to be sold 'winter checks' by the likes of Quick Fit et al...

I could go on.
This has a ring of truth about it methinks.

Another observation. I live not far from Smithy Fen, a gippo craphole you may have seen on the national news before. The inhabitants don't give a monkeys about the 30 limit in the local village and are often overtaking one another as soon as they get on the road. Unsurprisingly they all seem to have new or nearly new 4x4's, Mercs, BMWs, Transits and the like.
Not long back I was driving through the village (at 30mph) and ended up behind 3 other cars doing about 25mph (there are a lot of road calming measures in the village). Then along comes an 07 reg 911 from behind me, probably doing nearer 50mph. Next thing you know he's on the other side of the road, bouncing it over the bumps and then cutting in front of the first car to squeeze round one of those road narrowing bollard efforts. And guess what, 100 metres later he's rolling into Smithy Fen.
I wonder what his P60 lists for occupation?
There are any number of things in life that all come back to respect, and nowadays there doesn't seem to be a lot of it about. Probably in the past most people with no respect for their cars would own run-of-the-mill motors and nobody would care. Maybe the easy credit now is responsible, allowing these serial car abusers to run nicer cars, or maybe wealthier hubbies have been treating the wives to fancy motors ( and as the saying goes, if you worked for something then you appreciate it more and look after it). I would say for a lot of people nowadays the car is for appearance as much as anything else, people wanting others to think they are successful whatever the truth may really be......and the flashy showpiece will not get any better treatment than the doggy Mondeo they should be driving.

My other half has horses and i use the car to transport her and horse stuff and sometimes her mates. lots of dirty boots, clothes and stuff. So i try to clean the interior of the car once a week if i can to stop the smell and dirt building up. Usually clean the outside of the car at least once a week(its white so it doesnt hide dirt well).
Doesnt stay clean for very long tho.

Oh no, I sold the P1 about 2 years ago! This is my trusty 2002 VW Golf V5.

I didn't mean to imply I abuse my car, crashing it up kerbs etc. Far from it, I drive it very sympathetically since I need it to earn a living, I just particularly don't want to spend extra time polishing it when I regularly spend 4 - 10 hours a day in it.
