Nissan Micra - design speed 40mph

There's always one and you always find them in the tight twisties doing far less than that.

I don't have the Highway Code or Roadcraft at hand (shame me) but a horn warning wouldn't go a miss at this time.

Unfortunately I used mine at the weekend whilst overtaking a caravan that was using more road than required, so I let him know where I was and what my intention was with a quick peep. Guess the hand signal out the window means he didn't quite understand!!

I know that the guy who posted this isn't probably reading this thread anymore but any police driver who was driving close enough to a car that he couldn't be overtaken safely wouldn't have passed his "police" driving test IMO.

I get flashed by people when overtaking sometimes as well... happened tonight on the way home. Overtook a couple of cars, the one that flashed was one that I'd lifted off to pass... still don't have any idea why he decided to flash and then leave his light on full beam for.

Have had people flashing and leaning out their cars 'cos I've overtaken... it took about 20-30 seconds from me getting back into my lane before they got level with me... shows you how long the straight was and how much time I had.

If I come up against a long line of cars these days I generally don't bother overtaking... either I find another route or I start "cruising"... if I do then I leave enough space in front of me for someone else to overtake into without bothering me.

Worst time I had was following a line of cars all the way to pick up my oldest daughter and when I arrived to pick her up the person who'd been causing most of the problems was picking her daughter up as well... the bloke at the head of the queue had been weaving about... fairly sure he was drunk... and she'd been right behind him and was "too afraid to overtake" but still stuck so clsoe to him that no-one else could overtake on the roads we were on... cue a queue of cars about a mile or two long just due to one person who wouldn't overtake.

I still have an old Discovery (not used now) which I used to use on the roads... I always used to pull out the way or signal to other users when it was safe to overtake or just pull off the road altogether when I had a few cars behind me... guess I'm in the minority though 'cos I'd say that the vast majority of people on the road these days are basically selfish and only looking out for themselves.

I've lost count of the number of people I've come up behind before coming into a 30mph limit and then they've left me behind, or the numbers of people I've overtaken who then managed to catch me up and want to get into my boot while driving thru' a 30mph limit.

Personally I'd say that most 30mph limits are deserved... a few aren't though. Most 60 or 70's though could be higher, but then having driven some older vehicles (inc the disco) anything over that speed in something like that would be stupid 'cos they aren't desgined for it.

We all appreciate what the Highway Code / Law states.

But having "I was right" written on your gravestone is not much consilation.

When I was learning to drive my father said that "right of way, was only of use if the other person respects it".

Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened when I got stopped for speeding a few years back.

I was stuck behind a brown Corsa, which was following a green L-pated Escort so closely that it wasn't safe to pull into the gap. I gave the Corsa a couple of chances to overtake, but it didn't...so next straight, I overtook...the bad bit was I kept my foot on the accelerater for a bit longer than necessary, before braking for a 30 limit.

It turned out that there was a copper in the Corsa!

Anyway, cut a long story short, I got stopped for 'going a bit quick', but no comment was ever made about the actual overtaking manouevre. I was annoyed at the Policeman's attitude and how close he was following the recently-passed driver, but I was too much in shock at being stopped to comment at the time!

I myself have failed a test years ago for doing 27mph in a 30mph limit so
I can second that also, I failed my 1st driving test for not overtaking a car doing 55 on a dual carriageway coming upto a roundabout!

I cant remember if it was a serious or a dangerous fault.. but it definately happened, all for the sake of saving 10 seconds. (Which, ironically, was about the time the 1.0l micra would get from 55 to 65 - 70ish)

I'd just like to mention, as a bitter end to my tale of trickery, wo and deceit, that the particular lady/herm/man who took me for my test that day, was indeed the spawn of satan having a one nighter with an extremely pissed and incredibly clean shaven hitler. grrr.

Thanks for reading
