I got stopped on Monday this week but not for the exhaust amazingly.. Again like Alan for the number plate, thing is she went passed me, swung round in the road and followed me, we were sat in a que for about 5 mins and at that point I knew it was me she wanted or she'd have zipped past us all.. I pulled into our Shell garage as I thought better than the side of the road where she very politely asked me reverse away from the pump and to to park up as she neeed to have a chat about my car.. Now my exhaust is loud, it's 3" all the way through, decatted and has the (I think) 6" slash TSL Firestorm backbox so it's pretty obvious, she was sat behind me like I said but still only had a word about the plate, she asked me to change it within 28 days and get the paperwork she very nicely provided stamped by a MOT station. She also said she'd seen me about a few times in Basingstoke but I was always going a bit to quick in the oppisite direction and she wasn't about to chase me for a plate. Maybe she's saving the exhaust for next time ?

Just thought I'd throw something into the mix about PPP exhausts... I dunno how they can possibly be illegal, unless it was defective because genuine Prodrive Exhausts are E Marked...

I have been enquiring about replacing the exhaust or modifying the Blitz system.

Got in touch with PipeWerx - Performance Exhaust Specialist and was given some ideas of what I could do. I like the Blitz look and the obvious performance a full decat 3" bore system gives so want to keep it but add a silencer to quieten things up.

Have asked for more details regarding the modification however I believe it's a case of cutting the existing one piece centre pipe and then mating one of Pipewerx silencers into the system which should reduce the db level considerably but not rob too much power.

Then with the bung in the car should be whisper quiet on tickover and not noticeable at higher revs.

Other option is a complete system from the cat/decat pipe to backbox for £450+VAT so at least I have some options now.

I am still driving around without the bung and decided to drive through the city centre today, passed to police cars, no problems at all as I was driving within the speed limits and trying to make sure I wasn't making a racket with the Blitz (i.e changing up through the gears to keep revs low with just the scooby burble humming away).

As above... trust me, I know.

at the end of the day, we as insurance, tax and mot paying members of the public get picked on! (easy targets).

where as all the bag heads, illegal immigrants and anyone else who doesnt pay f all get away with it, im not saying all coppers do this as there are some good ones out there, but how petty can this get?

Get legal advise, but hey if you were on the dole you could even get that free!

For a road rally car to be used on public roads it must comply with the following noise limits as defined by the MSA:

98 dBa at 0.5m
86 dBa at 2.0m

These are NOT just the noise from the exhaust but other noises emitting from the car eg. induction noise etc.

I would therefore assume that these limits must be on or below the legal limit for a 'normal' road car.

For Road Rallying, the noise test is carried out at 2/3 of maximum rpm, so the test rpm depends on the model, it will be typically done at around 5000rpm.

None EU compliant cars such as JDM imports have to pass the SVA test, which has a test procedure as follows....

"Noise and silencers 1. The vehicle shall be fitted with an exhaust system including a silencer such that the exhaust gases shall not escape into the atmosphere without first passing through the silencer.

2. When -

(a) the vehicle is held stationary on a level surface such that there is an unobstructed area not less than 3 metres wide all around the vehicle; and

(b) the engine by which the vehicle is propelled is run at a constant rotational speed of 3/4 S, the noise measured at 0.5 metres from the exhaust outlet at 45 degrees to the axis of the outlet pipe in a horizonatal plane, shall not exceed 101db(A).

For the purposes of this item, "S" means the rotational speed at which maximum power is produced"

On a standard car the oficial peak power is at 5600rpm, so the test rpm is 2/3 of this, which is 3700rpm.

If you have a JDM car, then this is the only legally enforceable limit, as the SVA test is the test used to set standards for none EU Type aproved road cars.

When it comes to EU type aproved cars, the compliance tests for this use a drive by measurement, so it's going to be imposible for the Police to do a proper compliance test at the side of the road. The lower noise limit listed earlier in the thread is based on this test method and can not be used as a reference when doing a static test. This is why they are using the newer laws to stop and test you with regards to noise, it's basically anti social behaviour legislation and not construction and use legislation that they are using.

I had a new silencer made this week (as linked earlier to 22B.COM), mainly for my own comfort as i was tired of the in car noise of my 3" system, it's got the same performance but nothing like the same noise levels now, and it will get quieter as it carbons up in the first few hundred miles.

I've never been pulled for noise on any car, but having this is going to make that far less likely still, as the car isnt in your face loud. Noise is becoming more of an issue these days, both on the road and at trackdays where councils are putting more presure on the circuits to cut noise emisions, so it's something we have to take into account if we want an easy life. Even if technically there is nothing wrong with the car, it's an in oportunity to atract unwanted attention.

What I am doing now as well, hopefully get a good silencer fitted from Pipewerx and I should have a relatively easy time with less noise yet still retaining the performance of a decat 3" system.
