FUEL AND TAX PRICE PROTEST 19TH JULY

If you spend enough time reading the business pages of quality newspapers you can pick up quite broad base of knowledge on a lot of subjects. Leaving that aside it is all quite logical, as indeed is everything else that has been going on in the world economy recently. Essentially we are still paying VAT and duty on fuel at the same rates as a year ago. VAT is a percentage so that has risen slightly, but by far and away the largest increase in the fuel price has been due to the price of oil. The price you pay at the forecourt is basically
Price of a barrel of oil + refining/transportation cost + Tax + Oil company/retailer profit
Apart from a small increase in VAT the only part of that equation that has changed is the price of a barrel of oil. Therefore, when the price of a barrel of oil falls the price at the pump will fall (there will be a couple of weeks lag).
And the price WILL fall because competition between petrol stations is quite fierce and that will cause it to settle at a level that allows a reasonable amount of profit.

.But you cannot excuse the fact that a massive % of our fuel price is tax tax tax! The price per barrel is nearly meaningless..

You're quite right that the tax is very high and ironically that is what has prevented previous increases in the price of oil affecting our economy too heavily. You see that without the high taxes every $1 increase in the price of oil would be such a large percentage of the price we pay at the pumps that it would make a big difference to our expenditure. With our taxes as they are we only notice when the price of oil goes through the roof. Just look at America - they pay about $4 a gallon and are all up in arms.

The government charges fuel duty PLUS VAT! That's why the government is raking it in at present. And that's why this protest should go ahead!

Its much nearer 70% than 50%. So as someone has said Tax is way more... Also if we look at the remaining 30 - 35% we find its not just the oil company that takes its profit, so does the retailer/petrol court and anyone else involved in the process.

Don't forget, as the price of fuel goes up, the amount of tax as a % actually goes down, when petrol was 80p a litre, fuel tax was still 50p and then VAT as well, so tax made up over 80% of the total I believe.
So perversely, as the price goes up, the government actually looks better, even though they are raking in far more money, they appear to be taking less as a percentage. Don't let this fool you though.

not been on this subject sine the first few pages when the chief made the website, and again as asaid b4 top job, was just on pistonheads erading a review ovewr petrol prices and was given the link to the website i did not realise that this protest site has got soo much response, so to a the first few original posters back at page 1 + 2 good job lads and girls shows peoplel can pull together and get things done, bring on the 19th

The majority of the tax take comes from duty and not VAT. Petrol prices have gone up about 35p/litre over the last year. The VAT element of this is about 6p. Duty has probably gone up about 2p as well. This is nothing compared to the increase in cost of a barrel of oil.
If you look at tax across Europe we are all paying pretty much the same amount of tax. We're not the highest, nor the lowest, but we certainly aren't being taxed significantly more than everyone else. As much as I hate to say it, the high fuel price isn't down to excessive taxation. It's due to a world economy that has been turned upside down over the last year.
I suggest that before anyone embarks on this demonstration they make sure they are armed with the facts about fuel tax. Otherwise you risk being interviewed by a clued up journalist who'll make you all look like total idiots. What does it say about how much you believe in your cause if you can't be bothered to spend 5 minutes doing a google search to find out exactly what you're protesting about.

Tax is still controlled by our government and they could do something to ease our bills, and at the moment they are choosing not to. That is the point here IMO. The fact that the percentage on total pump price is lowering means nothing.

No Chief, I won't be joining you. I wish you all the best of luck, but you'll be asking a Government that is going to borrow over £40bn this year to reduce its income still further. You might get a token effort, but I'd put money on it being reversed at the next Budget. I hate this Government as much as anyone - you should see how much my pension contributions have had to increase because of W@nker Brown - but the current high prices are not of its doing. Sad, but true.

If doom is so clearly inevitable, the world will end etc, then why don't you do us all a favour and fix it. Or if you can't then stop whining and let some of us try and address something which will make us happier even if it is for a short while. So that's how they're planning to dig themselves out of a hole. Hopefully we'll have buried the lot of them by then in the political graveyard....it's just a shame Blair didn't end up in there with them to get his just deserts - he's just as guilty as Brown if not moreso.
