Just Got a PS3

The latest PS3 update to 1 and a half hours to download and install for me the other night. I thought my connection might be to blame, but PC and 360 downloads were going very fast.
Had the PS3 for a couple of months now, and I've not managed to get a quick download from it yet.

The longest download time I've had is about 30mins.
Funny though as a mate of mine came over on Saturday and he had never seen a PS3 in action so I fired mine up and went online with CoD4. He commented on how much smoother it was on my PS3 compared to his Xbox360. I guess alot of this sort of thing depends on your internet connection and possibly the router or modem?
Another friend of mine loses connection quite often when online with his PS3 and yet I think I can count on one hand the number of times I have lost connection whilst playing online.

Just because Sony have said the PS3 will have a 10 year lifespan doesn't mean that they won't release a PS4 before then and keep the PS3 chugging along to prop up the sales of the new console...

Not as silly as it sounds. The PS2 was released in 2000, so that's been going for 8 years already and it's still being supported with new games etc (it was also still significantly outselling the PS3 last time I looked).

Xbox cut their losses first time round, screwing a lot of publishers, developers and retailers, not to mention end users. They also missed out on that younger audience who will grow to be future brand-loyal advocates, hence why 360 is stuck in that 18-34 male bracket and why Sony will again win the war with PS3 with its mainstream appeal, offering and fanbase.
The way the economics work over a 'cycle', MS cannot afford to simply cut and run again for the next Xbox. It was very touch and go Xbox 360 getting the greenlight!!!

Microsoft aren't aiming to dominate this particular generation, they are simply in it to take market share and are doing that very well.
The very fact the PS3's dominance is in question is credit to Microsoft really.

Out of interest, I have a question for the people who say they are "more than impressed" with the console. What games do you play?
#40
F1..............Actually another damn good game when you turn off the assists
FIFA...........Best Footy game out there esp with the 5 v 5 feature
Uncharted...Actually enjoyed playing this, esp as the puzzles were the right side of taxing my limited grey matter.
GT4...........Still the daddy
Anyhoo, my download speeds on the PSN are fine with the update completing in about 15mins. Just because your speeds on PSN are guff does not mean everyone elses is going to be guff as well. Like me having a very poor experience with Live since Christmas but everyone else seems to be fine and dandy.
I do remember having a damn good battle or two with Forza in the single make racing with yourself and i would forward to locking horns again with you on GT5 Prologue. Adieu mon ami, till we do battle on the tracks of the world in cyberspace.
rFactor still is the king in my eyes and should be the benchmark for all racing games to aim for.

That'll be me then Iain
COD4, Uncharted, Burnout Paradise and Fifa at present, waiting for GT5 Prologue and GTA IV.
I'm not a daily gamer like the old days, small children put paid to that, just a few hours here and there, so i'm always going to pick and choose my games unlike the old days when I'd buy anything that had a half decent review, also when I start the PS3 up, it works 1st time, always a benefit especially with my time constraints
As for the machine itself
I like the quality construction of the machine it doesn't feel like a piece of Tuppawear, the ease of use of the interface suits me, card ports, SACD capabilities etc etc it suits me down to the ground.
To be fair how many people will walk into a lounge see a 360 and say Oooh you have a 360, they don't but they do with a PS3 lol Oooh whats that huge black monstrosity !!

Also play Need for speed Pro-Street, was a bit slow to start but I'm getting in to it now.
Quite enjoy Motorstorm every now and then for some no-brain-required, foot to the floor racing
Resistance got a bashing before I got into CoD4 and I will revisit it at some point to finish it off
Although the other half likes games like Buzz from the PS2 which was another reason for me to go the PS route, I went for a 60gig so still have the backward compatability with my PS2 stuff.
Looking forward to some future titles as well.......mainly GT5, the new GTA and also I read about the game "Aliens", based on the film of the same title. You play a marine and go to the planet to fight the aliens, apparently it's being backed by the same people that produced the movie and so should hopefully be a good game rather than just another money making movie spin-off

So the games people are enjoying most seem to the the multi-platform titles. Interesting. That's probably why I'm not using the machine very much at all. I've already got all of those for the 360

Yep, that's probably why. If you are used to using the Xbox more than the PS3 then I guess it would naturally be your first instinct to go for that, saves swapping between different controllers etc. as well.

CoD4 mainly. In fact most of the time at the moment!

I've been playing it on the 360 and the frame rate is absolutely shocking...
roll on tomorrow for GT5P - I've already played the jap version and it si stunning to look at, prepare to catch your jaw's for those who've not tried it yet...

It's been very good. The only time I have noticed any slow down is on some of the time attack races where at a certain point around the track, it sort of "pauses" for a fraction of a second, more of a stutter on a single frame rather than a pause, other than that it's been perfect.

Remember that Europe & the US got GT4 about 4 months after Japan got it - with the amount of online gaming these days, that kind of delay is unnaceptable and Sony know how important the GT brand is to its online aspirations.
IIRC GT4P was May 2003 & GT4 was March 2004.
I reckon it will be here by Christmas, but if the rumoured damage modelling is getting implemented then it will get put back.
