Just back from an hour demo of an imac in regent street. Sadly I couldn't balance one on the scooter, but I'm off biking in South wales tomorrow and sat so gonna pick one up on monday

Awesome piece of kit, makes Windows look very silly indeed.

Ere, is it easy enough to add the ram if I buy it from crucial. Given it's an 'all-in-one'?

Yes the ram slots are at the bottom edge of the imac, you simply lay it flat on its face, unscrew the panel and remove the existing ram and replace. full instructions are in the apple manual.

It's got 2 slots so you can put in 2x2GB modules.
Computer memory upgrades for Apple iMac 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (20-inch) Desktop/PC from Crucial.com

I shall be doing the same very soon
(more memory, that is )
Here's the Crucial scan of mine. It clearly shows you what memory to put in for what performance.

Ah, I see what you're getting at.
Will yours have 2x1GB modules or 1x2Gb modules?

Apple Store - U.K.
Looks like you get 2x1GB mods.

yes apple are buggers like that on the imacs and portables. they always fill both slots (if there are only two) with low size chips to make up the total. so for example you have 512MB and there are two slots, apple always filled it with 2 x 256MB which pissed us lot off big time. why dont they fill one slot with 1 x 512MB. all a marketing plan and a way to make you spend money, as you have to lose the useful but low size memory to gain the higher spec memory chips.

anyway I am glad you have chosen wisely and welcome to an area where there are loads of mac fans in here, who can advise you on s/w, hardware etc.

like Jack said, welcome to the light side

Isnt it always better to use RAM in pairs regardless of size, so better use can be made of them, certainly in newer computers (see I said computers and not PC's )

I think only if your computer supports dual channel. in which case matching the same dual channel ram will speed things up even more.

Another question...where best to buy Mac software, or is it all fairly 'controlled' in terms of pricing? I need office, lightroom, poss photoshop.

cheers

not relevant in a configuration where there is only 2 slots on a mac.
mac os x loves extra ram and anything over 1GB makes it run like a dream, though leopard (10.5 is quite ram hungry ), so 2GB is cool, 4Gb is perfect.

Hmm, my Laptop only comes with two slots, infact all the laptops I have had or worked on have only had two slots and almost all of them have had both slots populated, more so on the newer ones
