Si/Kev, if your still after a roof vent, have alook at this sheet about 3/4 of the page down under roof vents.

You do know that its god wish that you must have a roof vent in every subaru.

I'm not cutting that's for sure..... now I have seen how it goes together I don't think it is that difficult but I would need a roof to experiment on first
