They've got to be worth the money, just for the silver intercooler with red sti lettering that you can see through the bonnet scope

Cool

Rum-
Could you email me your details mate, I'll give you a shout when my renewal(s) come up, my current insurance find it difficult to get their heads around "mods" at all, and I'm pretty sure I've got virtually the same spec as Dave!

Cheers,

Alan.

Fair enough Dave!

Ive actually got a GTI-6 company car at the mo and i love the extra cog!!! Aparently 4th in the STI is = 3rd in the WRX.

I reckon the noticable engine lag out of slow second gear (in wrx) corners would be lessened by having a higher reving second in the STI. Slow second gear corners in a WRX are a pain IMHO - you really need to select 1st!!!

The engine just bogs down in the pre 3000rpm range on exit and you seem to wait for ages to get things going again. The 6 box sorts that issue out.

Cheers,

Jza

You are right about the lack of lowdown pickup with a std WRX, my plan is that the ScoobySport decat exhaust/new ECU will make the need for a sixth gear unnecessary, and give more low down grunt, especially low revs pickup in second as you say

Dave,

Even with the PPP (which improves low down grunt no end - recent rolling road tests showed the PPP to be producing 140 lb/trq at 2000 rpm compared to just 60ish on a full SS exhaust) i still find the gearings wrong. Unless your Link can deliver 200+lbs at tickover i still think the extra gear is the answer!!!

There is the extra 150 kg over a MY00 to contend with, and also I suspect the wheels/tyres fitted do not help. I doubt if the overall gearing went up from the MY00 to MY01, but tyre diameter went up from 612mm on the MY00 to 626mm on 17's, and I haven't helped by going to 18's (637mm). This is a 4.08% increase and this and the weight do not help low down grunt. I might swop to 35 section tyres next time as they are only 615mm diameter.

I could put 16's on, of course, but you have to draw the line somewhere

Not surprisingly I shall be asking for the Link to be mapped for low down grunt and driveability, not chasing BHP.....

I take it from all of what uve said Dave T-S that u r ni dummy, so why when going to 17's or 18's would the diameter change?

Are there not the options between 215/17/45 or 215/17/40 or 225/18/40 or even others, not having done the calcs for these yet, but i would have thought you would get within 5mm dia difference.

Only a suggestion, maybe uve already looked at these.

215/45x17 (std WRX) = 626mm dia
205/45x17 = 612mm dia
215/40x17 = 604mm dia
225/40x18 = 637mm dia
225/35x18 = 615mm dia

Your right mate -if you dont ALREADY OWN a wrx - go for the STI. But we are saying that if you already have a modded WRX - its not worth the £6k to upgrade!!

Jza - thats slightly optimistic.. my dealer mentioned approx £17K for my WRX .. hence I'm not considering trade in at all.. hence i won't be getting an STi for a year or so.

Not quite in keeping with theme of the thread but...Does'nt 30k for the Evo 7 sound reasonable since it will cost about that much to get the STi up to similar power(full exhaust,ECU,filter etc) and looking less hideous(lights, spoiler). Also you w'ont have to keep taking all the stuff off whenever you go for a service/warranty issue. Also Ralliart will tweak the car to approx 300bhp for about £1500,and you will retain the warranty.Furthermore the Evo7 has a fmic as standard which will be useful for real 'max'tuning should that be your cup of tea.Just a thought

Renault5, I paid 49,500chf from a dealer called Emil Frey here in Lausanne.
Awesome car, I've driven lot's of BMW M3's and M5's, this car is right up there, if not way past in many respects.

Well......drove an STI7 demonstrator today - conclusions?

Only had 167 miles on the clock, but for only 265bhp it went quite well in a straight line.

Handling - suspension is NOT as good as Leda on our WRX's. Rides too high, and a bit too much body roll for my liking. Once someone sorts a set of -20mm ride height slightly stiffer springs it will be perfect.

You notice the Suretrac diff in the front. It does haul it round bends (but the turn in of Leda and 18's is much better than standard WRX anyway).

The six speed box has short throw and a good feel to it.

It is, as I have maintained from my suspicions, a totally different car to a modded WRX.

It needs more grunt, to be lowered a bit, and a full decat (that alone will probably give close to 300bhp) and it will be spot on

You are of course correct, it's not worth upgrading after you have spent ££££'s on the WRX. Just the conclusion that I have come to already as I nearly bought a WRX 2 months ago but decided to wait and see what the STi would be like.

It's a bit like a gambler who has to stop gambling. They then realise how much they have lost, that's why they don't stop. The full realisation occurs at trade in time as to the amount spent since purchase. Er, I don't know where I'm going with this, I'd best stop now.

One thing to add to this.
I have been informed by a reliable source the STi will NOT be re-vamped for 2003 only the WRX.
Although I would imagine a Ltd edition out sometime, probably along the lines of a Tommi special STi, or non Sti you choose

Cheers,

Rob.
