Question

Er, when did you fit the sender and what was the reason for the hugely excessive oil usage from the moment you collected the car, fully run in iirc..?

FWIW what tape did you use..?

TBH something doesn't sound quite right about this..!

Sounds like a crock of bull to me mate. Did you pay for any of this on your flexible friend? (You may have legal cover you don't know about!)

Banny

to be fair to the tuner, who i have no contact with, if you have work done, then play around with it and it goes wrong, how can tehy be responsible?

might be worth a second opinion, but if they can show whats caused it then its pretty clear cut

i think i need to clear rhings up,
the car was using oil before i put in a oil temp defi sensor i bought from the tuner, i fitted it and it leaked, a very small amount, i then took it off applied a very small amount of tape to it and put it back, then a week later i used 4 litres of oil in 40miles, no traces of it on the floor etc or from what i could see,
i have not said it was a cop out from the tuner at all or that i'll get a second opinion etc,

however if it is not their fault, and an owner issue, why do they have any responsibilty?

if you tv blew up because you poured water down the back, would you ask the manufacturers for a new one cheap?

it is the principal of the issue, not the value.

i think banny is arguing the fact it had an oil issue before hand, it all happened with 3 weeks of driving the car, (week one it used alot of oil, week 2 i fitteed the sensor, week 3 it went bang), i have asked the tuner for photos of the tape inside the engine for support, ill post it on here when i get it, so you all can see it,

I am confused.

How did it use so much oil when it wasnt leaking or blowing it out of the engine? It doesnt just vanish. When did you first notice it was using oil?

the day after i got it, i was given 4ltrs of oil, they said because they never had a litre bottle, i was told by them it burnt oil and to keep an eye on it, so the next morning after getting the car i checked it and it needed a litre of oil, it used another litre in the next 2 weeks, then 4 litres in 40 miles,

before or after it started to loose the oil as fast as a grounded oil tanker.

I my opinion there was a problem with this engine after it had been built and run in by the garage. Why would it use so much oil in such a short period?

It was unfortunate that you had fitted the sensor with the wrong tape, but convenient for others.

It sounds like a combination of things obviously he had a mystery oil consumption problem from day one (hence the supply of 4 litre bottle ) & oil levels got dangerously low plus a possibility of a blocked oil way with the tape later on. It still sounds like a cop out to me as the tuner found a small amount of tape that shouldn't have been used. With the lack of pictures of the blocked oil way there is no evidence to show that this was the cause.

I have no doubt that the tuner we use would have shown more urgency in diagnosing the initial oil consumption problem & certainly would have shown more sympathy to this gentleman's plight in finding an amicable solution. But I guess it isn't fair to compare to our tuner because they really do set the standard (or maybe they owe me 4 litres of oil because I got no replacement oil after my 2.5 conversion, didn't need any tho )

Anyway, good luck to you. I hope you can find a way to fix it, keep it & enjoy it

If it is Bearing damage then the most probable cause would be when it was run with very little oil in it, I would seriously doubt that small amounts of tape could have resulted in bearing failure without additional factors.

The problem is now you will probably never find out the actual cause of the oil loss and you could have the same problem happen when it is put back together!!
(unless the true problem is spoted by the tuner and put right)

Hi all . Been reading through the thread. And was wondering? Were the pistons drop in units or bored to fit ? I've just built a 2.5 with the help of 2 very well known supplier's/Engine Builders. I was going to use drop in units but found the bores were totally the wrong sizes .Subaru had changed them and i was not the first that the engine builder had found like this! A's being smaller than B's which would cause totally the wrong clearances and possible oil burning would of occured. I went down the route of spliting the block in the end just to make sure and boring to fit . Not saying this is the fault but a possibility

well, i can sort of second that, as i did heard the same not long ago, the tuners website state they bore to piston, upon checking the engine they say they've checked clearance's etc, im just awaiting he's email with photo's of the strip down, i have only pictures of the sensor in the block, no photo's of the bleck split, etc,

Thumbs down

Wouldn't something like plastic tape get caught in the oil pan strainer or the filter, if indeed it hadn't melted completely..?

Call me sceptical, but with regards to the possible cause of this failure, the writing was on the wall from page 2..!

CS have you been given an idea of how much it would cost to repair the engine..?

when you got the car back was it noisy on cold start ? this could indicate the wrong clearances . As only supposed to be 3 thou on wiseco pistons .
