There my friend lies the problem - it's totally flawed.

Put all the tax onto petrol and there wouldn't be an issue - do more miles pay more tax, simple.

Why would they do this when they can break the taxation up and avoid the masses complaining about the £1.50/£2.00 litre

It's a great idea but high road tax enables labour to target the (mainly) wealthy owners of recent high performance cars under the banner of environmental awareness.
Stealth taxation at it's best

Unfortunately we live in a Tax Nation, if people enjoy what they do in their life then the Goverment will and do Tax it.
You enjoy a pint they TAX IT, You may enjoy to have a puff they TAX IT, even try to BAN IT, You enjoy to have a nice car so they TAX IT how many times??? 1) 17.5% VAT when you buy it, 2)65% Fuel duty +17.5%VAT every time you fill up, 3)£200-£400 Road tax + 17.5% VAT to use the so called roads( I think roads where in a better state when Dick Wittington went to London) 4) 17.5%VAT on the cost of a MOT and so on.

If every one started to get rid of their cars and walk it would'nt be long before the so called Goverment invented a Sole Tax, based on how many pair of shoes you owned, and bear in mind the bigger your feet the more you pay.

It isn't a goverment that we have its a dictatorship and a poor one at that, at least in a proper dictatorship we would have less crime.

Thats how I feel, about time we got rid of this Labour joke and bring back the Tories. Although they had some stupid ideas, people had more money in their pockets and we could still call our selves Great Britian, instead of the Great World Doss House had we are now

Rant over

Even though I agree with the sentiment, there is no VAT on road fund licence or MOTs.

I own a garage mate, there definitely isn't. I could go into the VAT rules for MOT stations and non-MOT stations but TBH I can't be bothered.

The site where I work went to a 20MPH speed limit .... there was an outcry initially - but now it's obeyed and it's really quite pleasant driving at that speed - everyone is courteous and calm.

I would highly recommend it in built-up areas

My tax is due 01.04.08.

As my car was registered on 14/3/06 it falls into the higher band.

So.....is there any way to get round paying the £400 by buying 12mths tax early and only paying £300.

However, I bet I won't get my reminder until a week or so before it is due....

I only paid £200+ 12 months ago.

Cheers,

Mark

Only way round it is to sell the car and buy an older one im afraid.I'm in exactly the same predicament as my car is a 2004 MY05 but registered on 20/7/07 which i think is daft as tax should be calculated on engine size and overall size of vehicle

Yes there is! Send your current tax back to DVLA on the last day of the month before the rise and go into the post office the following morning with your V5 and get a new 12 month licence. It'll put it off by a year I guess!

Does anyone know what the cost will be when there is no CO2 figure shown on the V5?

You should only pay £205 as your car is band F and not band G. Band G is, and i quote "Over 225 – for cars registered on or after 23/03/06" . You are 9 days within. Mine (MY06) was registered on 01/03/06 so you should pay the same as me, £205.

Tony.

the band calculations are sooo cynical, the <100g/km cars = there aren't any. the >225g/km include a huge amount of 'affordable' cars i.e. working class motors, why is the cutoff set at 225g/km? why isn't the so called sliding scale continued past this, because gordon clown wants maximum ripoffage whilst keeping the richest voters sweet that's why. a difference of 1g/km can mean £195 to some owners,

but it is ok to have a scoob at 244g/km at £400 and a murcielago roadster at 500g/km also £400, can anyone else see what is wrong here? 2 scoobs worth of CO2 and mpg equivalent to driving 2 scoobs, but the same tax,

to put it into perspective 244g/km is 2 corsa 1.3cdti with 60mpg or half a WRX in terms of emmisions and CO2, so should be £200 a year? right?, well it is £115 a year, so how the **** do the conmen that we elect and pay to run this country get away with what can only be deemed a con? i cannot wait until that smug pompous excuse for a leader is out on his fat ****.....

Probably be taxed under PLG system, so over 1549cc is £180 under 1549cc is £110 currently.

Some cars such as some Alpina models and other small manufacturers are taxed this way. So if you want cheap tax buy a Zonda!
