Really looking forward to getting down there on Monday, looks to be an amazing line up of cars across the board and 21 supercars - great stuff!

I understand Kevin McCann is out in a revised Scoob, and the chap who ran at the Superprix last year is there as well, isn't he? I'm relying on at least one of you to put a Scoob into the "A" Final!

Absolute disaster weekend

I knew it was going to be "one of them" when i drove the car out the garage on saturday morning. The repair to the selector rod after the previous test weekend hadn't been strong enough and it broke almost as soon as i selected the gear, so it was a case of getting the box out, finding the fault, repairing the selector again (but stronger) and refit the box, before loading up and travelling over 300 miles to kent! We did make it but everyone in the team was knackered after working flat out all day.

Anyway, we went for first practice on sunday morning to shake down the engine and check the gearbox, which all went fine.. Till we ran in the second timed practice. At the first corner of the second lap we lost gears again and we feared the worst. I limped round the whole lap to set a time and to ensure we at least could take to the grid for the heats. It would have been so easy to just load up the car on the trailer at this point and go home, but we pressed on with the weekend.

It was decided skip the first heat to give us time to strip the box down after practise and make sure that it was fixed for heat 2 & 3.
Much to our suprise, it was the selector for gear 1&2 that had failed and ment the car was stuck in second gear as it wouldn't disengage from the 2nd gear.
Just as we set too with stripping the box, we lost all power at the circuit till late (what are the chances of that, really!!), meaning we couldn't use a welder to fix the box till after 6pm when the power was sorted. We finally got a bodge trackside repair done to allow us to select neutral again about 11pm. The repair wasn't perfect as with limited tools we had available and ment we couldn't fully engage 2nd or 4th, but at least we could have 1st to get of the line and 3rd to run the circuit.

We limped through heats 2&3 with just the 2 gears and we weren't even the slowest supercar on track

I scrapped into a C-final somehow after all the drama of the day and had the car on 3rd position on the front row, but the unlucky day wasn't finished with me just yet! I took my spot on the grid, flicked on the antilag, engaged the launch control and waited for the lights to change. The light changed, i dropped the clutch and something in the transmission went bang (and it sounded like a very expensive big bang too) and the car lost all drive.

I haven't got the box out the car yet as i just pushed it in the garage on tuesday when we got home and i fell out with it lol, but it will be out this weekend to investigate.

It needs turning round within the next 2 weeks to be out at knockhill as i have some unfinished business and something to prove

I'll keep the updates coming

I wasn't there on the Sunday, but I was watching Monday (hence the picture!) and you didn't look like you were having a great day.

I thought you might be able to salvage something from the C Final, but sounds like your gearbox had other ideas. I hope the problem isn't too severe and you get it rectified for Knockhill.

Glad to see you aren't giving up though!

Great stuff, thanks for the heads up!

Are you part of the team, or do you just spot the updates on the Horton site before everyone else?

Steve is very much part of the team, infact all the whole hortonracing site & new blog is thanks to him. Steve own's the hosting company Luno.net who you will see on the rear of my car and all our previous ones, he's also a fellow competitor in rallycross (he's building a supermodified MGZR)

Good news on the car side, we are all fixed and fighting fit for the weekend.
The problem was a broken driveshaft and prop shaft in the end, besides the damaged selector rods. So all these has been replaced (thanks to Zen performance for your help) and we will be looking for a top 6 finish on sunday at knockhill.

I'll be posting on the blog at the weekend about how we get on, so keep your eyes peeled. There will also be images loaded up on the website on monday and we will be running 3 incar camera's to capture the action, so i'll try and edit those at somepoint next week too.

Ah, that explains why he's always the first one to spot the updates on your site!

Great to hear the car is back on form again, good luck for the weekend and I look forward to reading about (and watching) the action next week!

Default Brilliant seaon so far..

Time for a update I think!

I don't know if anyone has been following the new rallycross season, but we are 3 rounds into the calender and the great news is that i'm fighting the subaru corner and have just had a brilliant weekend at Blyton and am now proudly sitting 5th in the Supercar class!

round 1 at lydden was terrible, but since then round 2 & 3 have gone our way and we are consistantly fighting towards the front end of the pack at last and the car is now running perfectly.

Last weekends race at blyton was the first time we have truly shown what as a driver and car combination we can do. We had a slow start to the morning and struggled with excessive wheel spin off the line in the heats, but showed so really guts slogging it out in the races and got faster and faster as the day went on. This was also the first night race the british rallycross championship has run, which has proved to be a massive success with fans and drivers alike.

I made it through the heats picking up a 3rd place along the way and "almost" claimed a 2nd. This put me in the supercar B final against fellow subaru driver gareth woods who ran me very, very close in a similar spec'd car but I claimed the victory in that race. This then promoted me to the supercar A final which i claimed 6th fastests time which again promoted me to the superfinal. Again I claimed a respectable 6th place, just missing out on 5th by less than a second.

The next event is in belgium which will be a whole new experiance with different competitors on a track i've never seen before, so watch this space.

Si

Saw the results from Blyton but I haven't seen the coverage yet. Great result and good to see the car coming together for you.

Good luck for Maasmechelen. I believe there is a newage Subaru running in the Belgium championship, so hopefully you may be joined on track by another Scoob out there!

Evening Al,

Fraid not, the old gearbox gremlin has come back to haunt us again
Had a bit of a rough year with relighability to be honest, so that is number one on the list to address for next season as we have the raw pace now.

cheers for the positives

It's all the small niggley things that has really stopped me being right on the pace with the fords. We have the power now, there is no question of that and in a straight line we are one of the quickest, but for some reason i've just not being able to get the overall stability of the car exactly how i want it. It's like one race it's planted, and the next it's like a ship at sea. Think we need to have a major look at the ARB's, Diff's and general suspsension geo before 2011.

Second major thing i need to get sorted is my starts. Long and short of it is for 70% of the time they have been errible this year. It either launches like a rocket, spins all the wheels up or bogs down, and even using the launch control, the outcome if litrally like flipping a coin. When it all hooks up it's unreal, but when it doesn't the grid is off and down the road and then its usually do or die late braking moves to catch them up into the first corner. Also we had a new light system which seems to have caught me out this year. We used to get a count like they do in f1, then the lights went out and we where off. Now it just flashes and you go which for some reason doesn;t seem to suit my starts. I know it sounds silly as they are only lights, but it does make a difference.

I think one solution to the starts and handling is to go for the more grippy avons next year but then you put more risk of damaging the transmission on the hard launches, and in the changable conditions the kumho's do seem to have the edge, but defo loose out in hot and dry conditions, which bar knock hill they all have been this season.
Also the fact that we have had so many mechanical failures ment that every event was effectivelly a test session from the last retirement. I think it has shown that when we get a run of 2-3 relighable runs like earlier in the year we can really take things forward and fight with the best.

Lots of food for thought over the winter and I'm hoping that if we tackle the problems in a logical and thought out way, it will mean better results and more importantly consistancy for 2011.

The 2011 British Rallycross Championship has yet to be annouced, but there are two rallycross dates for next year already:

Saturday 12th February - Winter Rallycross Masters - Lydden Hill
Saturday 23th to Monday 25th April - European Rallycross Championship - Lydden Hill

Not sure what the Rallycross Masters is all about, but could be a good place for someone to try a new car out...

I thought that initially, but then I thought the light looked a bit small for a Hawkeye headlight? Sure we'll find out soon enough!

Wink here's the first real sneek peek in the flesh

Well i've been promising this for a long while now, so here is the first official picture of the new car, fresh from the bodyshop so it's not fully complete just yet.

It's will be ready to hit the grid in approx 6 week once the build is complete and we have tested the new car.

(and yes it's a 2008 hawkeye )
