Top tips ... and all so true as I've found out today. I wished I'd pulled the fuse on the ABS before I set-off at 6-30 this am!
Been at least 4 years since I drove in snow as bad and I was a virgin in the scoob so it was all new ground. The fun started as soon as I left the local estate .... not as much grip as I thought there would be but I soon adapted and "enjoyed" the trip in ... it was sooooo icy on the way in tonite as most of the local roads are still white over as they don't grit b roads here in Warks and I have to say I got "into the groove" and I actually enjoyed it .... so gentle on the throttle and brakes and it was a pleasure to drive, a lot better than my old XR2i in the white stuff ..... more feedback and a lot more confident ... I found you could actually feed the power in quite well and keep the grip levels ....... in a straight line but boy did you have to tip toe around those corners
If only we had more of the stuff I would invest in a set of "Town & Country" tyres for those white days .... and have loads of grip
Might not venture out to work in the morning as they have forcast -8c tonite, think it's about time I took the kids sledging ! Now where's that scarf 'n' hat .....

If only I had the manpower to do everything!

Know what you mean - boy, did I see all the Muppets out today - three in ditches this morning and the idiots that tailgate you in 3" of snow on a deserted country road and think the stopping distance is still four feet from 35mph!!!
Carolyn gets the hero medal - my commute is only 14 miles (well, to the station) but she had to do 40 miles cross country at 6am in 4-5" of snow. Lateral grip - what's that

Stuart,
i am sure that (given a percentage of the proceeds!) someone could invent a device that is small enough to fit into those grey boxes often seen at the side of the road on poles (usually hidden behind other "furniture") that could easily detect drivers who don't clear snow off their cars (or leave their fog lamps on, or drive too close, or don't signal etc.)

I had to abandon my car on the way into work this morning (E36 M3) ... got completely stuck trying to go up a gentle hill !!!
Rear wheel drive, no weight in the boot = no grip. very dangerous ! ended up running back home in the snow blizzard to borrow a Citroen ZX Turbo Diesel which performed a lot better than my M3. not good!!

Had an amusing half hour on Dartmoor today.
After driving around _on_ the moors, we then had to get _off_ the moors.
Devon = BIG hills!
Fortunatelly most of the roads were gritted, but came across a queue of 6 cars trying to get up a 200yd hill.
A bit of the old community spirit came into action, and we all helped each other up the slope which had been turned into sheet ice. (the Scooby obviously made it up with no effort! )
Amazing that people were revving their engines as hard as possible, and I was also suprised at the number of empty Escort and Transit vans that were around -
Hello! RWD + no weight in the back = NO TRACTION!
Still fun day with (fortunately) no damage. Would like to bin the ABS though - pain in the ar$e!

Why not come along and man a control(which is a good way to get a feel for the events here) or even take part?
It's a TSD (regularity) event so we don't run service crews and the forests are waaaay to cold at that time of year to just spectate. The TSD events are usually not too rough on the car, although one was totalled on the totem Lake event and another was well off the road for about 12 hours as the tow truck couldn't find it
Top fun. The event usually runs approx 500 miles over two days, most of which is stage miles. With everyone getting together for a beer or two on the Saturday night.
It counts for points in both the BC championship and the Pacific Coast Challenge.
Oh and we finish up doing an ice race on a frozen lake MAJOR
Check out the link above or email me and I'll put you in touch with the organisers, they're in Vancouver also.

I finally plucked up enough courage to take my Z3 M Roadster out yesterday. 321bhp and VERY worn rear tyres = wheelspin the whole time unless I just breathed on the throttle. When I had the Scoob it was much better (going forwards), although braking distances (worn tyres excepted) seem about the same.
Neither are a patch on the other half's Freelander which has so much grip its not true! Amazing the difference decent (i.e. off roadish) tyres and suspension make. Even though the ABS on the Freelander is still a pain, it kicks in so much later. Didn't think I'd like the Landy that much, but I have to say it is brilliant!
One thing in the Beemers defence - when I had the Scoob at track days, everyone kept moaning about the lack of oversteer on Scoobs. With the BMW I just have to press the loud pedal - not much fun in this weather, but fantastic normally! And yes, I'm sure the Scoob is faster on wet country roads from A to B, but I reckon I have more fun now (flame suit on......)

Big power + RWD = loadsa fun
Don't mind what anyone else thinks.
Bobb
2 collisions in 10 mins.....don't take this the wrong way but you have the controls. Get on a course like Don Palmers, it is a good investment especially in the current conditions

Just a quick Thumbs Up again for JohnS' winter driving tips - most useful. I've always been one of those people that scrapes the ice off my windscreen, afraid that using hot water would crack the screen. However, decided to try John's tip with hot (not boiling) water and bugger me it worked. Completey defrosted all the windows and it didn't mist up inside! Next door neighbour was still sitting in her car waiting for the screen to demist, while I drive away.
Cheers

Chris, what i do is boil a kettle full, then empty it and fill it with normal water, the element heats it sufficiently.
Also when clearing the windows, pour the water not straight onto the glass but ont the paintwork before it thereby cooling it before it hits the glass just in case.
Also, once u pour the front windows, keep the wipers on to stop that water freezing over....just make sure you dont stand by the side of the car when your doing it otherwise you'll get wet!

DEEDEE,
Pass your area nearly everyday, live in Mansfield, work near Warsop. Have a couple of Friends in Shirebrook.
Sutton side of Mansfield is still very white, kids have been out all day.
Police have been out near the Rufford on Chesterfield Road, kids throwing snowballs at cars.
