I have not had to do anything apart from amend the mapping for it as it is a completely different turbo. The car has done quite a lot of track miles in the last 3 weeks (i think 700 counts as a lot) and not used one drop of oil, only used 100ml of water and never required anything other than checks. I am hoping this trend will continue for another 5 weeks

The move from the HTA is only because of the fact that my lambda sensor lunched into the exhaust wheel of the turbo after 140 laps of Brands Hatch in one day - so that is currently on the bench awaiting rebuild.

Mark from Lateral (and Paul at Zen) let me use this test turbo as a last minute get me to the Ring favour - Cheers Guys

The turbo is a test / development turbo and looks really good so far - I will be dyno-ing it next week at Zen to see what figures it produces. It is fully mapped and tested now but I will be experimenting with a few maps to get the best out of it and the car with the luxury of a repeatable environment. Gut feel at the moment says it should be the happy side of 500 of each on pure pump fuel (no additives) but until facts and figures have been verified that is pure speculation

-----------------------------------------------------

A nice pic from the recent ring trip and proof that one wheel was off the ground at PF 1

Thanks for the pics Lou @ Nurburgringphotos.co.uk.....EMAILhotos@nurburgri ngphotos.co.uk - Home for this and many other shots

Duncan,
Further to our brief discussion on aero wings over single blade over bi-plane, where did you get your aero from and is it C/F on billet?
I seen a few ranging from 6.5" off the car in grp to 9" off the car in c/f and I'm unsure what to spec..
cheers

Higher is better for clean (laminar) airflow and thus downforce.

Mine is an APR Performance item and will be sold towards the end of this year to change to a higher model.

I can tell it is there and doing its job though even at the current height. The 2006 with the roof spoiler helps guide airflow onto it.

Some videos of the TouristenFahrten at Hockenheim taken by my mate Nige in his Golf.

Shows the pure 'excitement' in full glory.

Hockenheim TF 21st August 2008 VW Golf MK2 Session #1 on Vimeo

Hockenheim TF 21st August 2008 VW Golf MK2 Session #2 on Vimeo

Quite simply the most terrifying experience of my life to date.

Loved it

I know.

No briefing, no rules on overtaking - even the ring is governed by german law so you have to overtake on the left.

Here it was left, right, through the middle, at one point I had to overtake on the grass around one corner It was either overtake and try get some space in front or get hit up the back by someone else

It felt like a 140 car race

I spent friday afternoon over at Zen in Wellingborough on the dyno ( a perfect end to the week IMO)

After some fun and games getting it to stay on the rollers and experimentation at different boost levels we eventually ended up here:

Graph:

449 bhp at the wheel:
489 bhp flywheel
483.8 lb/ft

Please note that this is not a finished map, there is more to be done on it to smooth out the dip in torque at 4500 caused by the avcr dropping approx 0.2 bar of boost just at that point. With better boost control it would have made over 500 lb/ft there.

There is also a lot more to be had at the top from experimenting with different AFR's and timing.

All the runs were done on pure vpower with no additives, methanol, octane boosters. I will be testing these in due course and will post up the results but for initial testing on the turbo it is looking very promising for over 500 of each on std fuel.

Unfortunately we ran out of time on the day waiting for it to cool down sufficiently between runs both Paul and I wanted to go home and eat

Nope they isnt. I will be doing some more dyno work soon to see what gives and also to compare it on a Dyno Dynamics set of rollers locally.

-----------------------------------------------------

Picked up one of these last week to give more roll stiffness.

The existing whiteline 22mm ARB's are set to hardest setting and more headroom in adjustability is needed. The Perrin 25mm rear bar will give that option. A front 25mm will be added shortly to add the ability to tune that end further.

I fitted it over the weekend and it has made a good difference to the handling I believe but the front also needs uprating. This will be done shortly.

thanks mate

It will do more than this with an aggressive map on it but with the amount of track action mine is seeing it is mapped richer than a pure road car would be due to the extra heat of sustained track work.

Always a bit more left in reserve.

Will be interesting to see figures on a slightly more octane rich blend

Still some work to do but I will do some road dyno runs today with Delta Dash to see where it is at and, of course, type a few words about it

It was always in the plan to run BioEthanol this year and I was hoping to get this move done fully much earlier but events transpired against me but having seen it first hand courtesy of Paul at Zen it was time to explore it.

Ultimately the plan is to run pure BioEthanol E85 but for the moment I am experimenting with mixes of it similar to the way some people use Methanol but this is 100% within Time Attack rules unlike Methanol or other exotic fuels.

I wont go into the technical benefits of it but now that I have had a chance to really compare the two and adjust the map to adapt to it... I am very excited about the real-world effect of this fuel and have been able to notice the difference in the drive characteristics.

I filled up a couple of jerry cans from morrisons in dereham and have mixed it with tesco 99 and love it

The lower figures are from between the 490 bhp runs at APT and Zen, the higher figure is last week. The figures shown here are all are wheel figures and using the same stretch of road, same fuel level, same gear, same wind speed and almost identical ambient temp.

As you can see it shows quite a marked improvement....

3rd gear acceleration:
30 - 50mph = 2.5 seconds
40 - 60mph = 1.7 seconds
50 - 70mph = 1.4 seconds
60 - 80 mph = 1.4 seconds

Going green is good

Full dyno runs on Zen's rollers to follow soon....

Duncan,
Nice figures!

So to be clear.... the circa 450 at the wheels via Delta Dash is based on a non pump fuel mix then?

IIRC based on comparative Delta Dash vs MAHA RR figures I did back in 2006, Delta Dash PAW was about 20% different to the MAHA flywheel. That was based on exact weight measurements, flat road same conditions. Based on that, you are looking at 540 at the fly on funny fuel.

Still 100% 'pump fuel' Shaun

....it's just a special pump

Would be VERY impressed if it hits 540 bhp.

Yeah, I filled up some cans because my nearest petrol station selling E85 is an hour's drive away. Plus I am not running it neat at the moment.

I hope you don't intend on using this "funny" fuel for the RR day? If the gloves are off, I will have to get mine done on VP Import.

lol - gloves are off. I would hope that your fancy dan heads and cams would be enough to outshine a bit of turnip juice.

Mine is an overpriced piece of junk so I am led to believe by the "authorities". So I have no expectations, other than it will achieve at least 1bhp for at least 10secs before blowing it's load all down the road.

Joking apart, I have heard through the grapevine that some have suggested my figures on BOTH dyno's have been doctored. What a bunch of idiots!

Anyway.... you can't beat a bit of head , so let's see how it compares on the rollers.
