the bm's a nice car to drive, but i'd still have the wrx

 

A 330 couldnt pull away from my T5 in a roll on from about 30 to 80, I was expecting to get wasted, didnt happen !

UNBELIEVABLE!!

nope, the most I have EVER seen is 35mpg on VERY economcial driving... maybe I have a duffer!!!! I know it was one of the first 330D tourings registered in the UK. It's a steptronic, fully loaded (was about £33k OTR... )
All driving done on fast A-roads with LOTS of ascents & descents
(west coast of Scotland)

Reckon I should contact the dealer??

P.S. What do think about the "lifetime oil"?? Thought it was the 1st April when the dealer told me about it!!

tested 330 with superb auto box before getting wrx- BMW is the best car i have ever driven as an all round package- leaves the wrx for dead it many, many areas..... except fun.

My 330d is a June 2000 and was over £35k with bits :rolleyes - but only cost me £29k 8 months and 7000 miles later and has now done 32000 miles

It is an auto/Steptronic, although I very seldom use the steptronic - primarily as the sequential shift is the opposite way round to my westie (pull back to change up in the westie, push forward int he BMW), plus for more rapid progress, the Sport mode seems as good as I could manage on the Step!!

Never heard the lifetime oil thing, mine has certainly had two oil changes (or at least I have been charged for oil changes in both services!!!).

My driving is predominantly motorway and A-road - 38 miles e/w commute is 7 miles A-road, 25 miles motorway (75mph on Cruise Control), 5 miles A-road into city centre, I know the steady motorway distance, especially on set cruise control will make a positive difference, but I would still get them to check it!!

I do wonder whether this is it though - a diesel driver for life (albeit always with a weekend/track car in the garage ) That being said the Alpina Bi-Turbo-d 5-series looks good (240hp, 350lb/ft) and the new 5 and 7 series are getting a 4.0 V8 Diesel - c270hp and 450lb ft!!!!

I have to agree with EyeMajic. How on earth do you get 48MPG from an auto. BMW only quote 45.6 and those figures are taken in ideal conditions. The best I can get is around 36 MPG and I have the saloon which is 90KG lighter than the tourer. I have drove very carefully since my last fill up and I predict I will get around 420 miles from a full tank.

What is your secret.

I like BMW's. I like scoobs. For the driving I do (mainly motorway and dual carridgeway), I'd choose a BMW. When I lived nearer work and only really used my car for fun, I'd would have preferred a scoob.

Better MPG in a beemer and more confortable, means for me it's better in my current situation, in another situation the scoob may be better.

Just because 2 vehicles have similar power outputs doesn't mean they should autmatically be compared, I don't think they attract the same market in general. My mates lorry has 300bhp, think a scoob would beat it in a straight line tho, but he cold carry more

Well I own both a Scoob and BMW330CI Sport.....

..... the most telling thing was going on a back roads run with a bunch of Scoobs, I was driving the BMW. The Scoobs could not lose me on the twisties - oh - and it was peeing down.

Interesting, huh - and I do not regard myself as a particularly special driver - car can be really driven and thrown about - probably a far better day to day car than the M3.

It's not a Scoob, its a BMW - but it has superb composure and accessable handling - it is also refined and I recently did 1000 in a week and got 32mpg. In my Scoob I am lucky to get 22mpg - albeit a tad faster than the BM.

To me - the perfect combination of cars.

Oh - and I am not a blind lover of BMW brand - after my last one - 323 Coupe - I told BMW UK I would never own another one of their completely rubbish cars - but the 330Ci Sport is just too good to ignore and very, very quick.

I think it was EVO magazine that summed up this type of contest quite well when commenting on the test of the Mitsubishi Extreme. They said that the whole point of cars like the Impreza/Evo were that, for small bucks, you got a vehicle that in the dry could compete well with higher priced cars like the M3 etc, and in the wet, in the right hands, leave them for dead. Once you started paying + £30,000 for this type of car however the whole point of the exercise becomes a little lost, i.e. go for the BM it's better value at that price, period. But in the real world however, good the 330 is, at £15000 my PPP '98 Impreza will be more than a match for it in the dry, and in the wet, home for tea before the BM turns into the road end, and yes I have driven them. That seems to be a factor of the Impreza thats beginning to be forgotten, it's cheap, has fairly basic interior build quality, and goes like stink in all conditions. I must admit I do smirk a little when I see the ads for the ultimate Bavarian driving machine, I think on this site we know a little different.
