Other point TG didn't mention is performance in the wet. Autocar did some dry/wet comparisons with the same 3 cars recently. The RS4 came 1 second behind the Merc in the dry and 5 seconds ahead of either in the wet!

He was pretty scathing about M3 drivers, there does seem to be a type, like Clarkson was on about and also they seem to be a few yobbos with them now, espeically the old ones.

I have always liked my BMW's but
RS4 for me.
More practical with 4 doors, is supposed to be a saloon.
4 wheel drive which suits todays needs, roads, and climate.
Prefer the styling - looks aggressive without being OTT.
Less likely to get key scratched.
Can be brought 2nd hand so depreciation less of an issue.
This said I would sooner have a BMW335I 4 door Msport, and let one of the tuning boys loose on it for a couple of grand, and for around 30k second hand I would have a 4 door 335I, that looks as nice as a M3, but with 4 doors, cheaper to service and maintain and very likely RS4/M3 performance or damn close, and probably a better day to day car to live with. And a lot cheaper.

Alot of M5 drivers of previous years didn't buy the car purely for the badge....where alot of M3 drivers did. The ones focused at badges are the ones who generally prance around like they think they are something.
Which is exactly why there was such a monstrosity like the M3 cabriolet.
New M5 is a nerd's car though. Christ what happened to Big engine, Seat, manual gearbox, pedals and steering wheel...pants optional.
Now we have to have adaptive launch control, adaptive suspension, adaptive steering, pre-selectable engine power, adpative automatic gearbox, TV, sat nav, a/c, 8-way adjustable heated seats etc. E39 was bad enough, but at least with that, the gadgets didn't get in the way of driving it - unlike the new one.

RS4
Considering getting a A4 Quattro Avant with the 2.5TDI in it, yes I know its dull and boring but I have other stuff to drive when I want to go mad, most of the time I just want to get from A to B in quiet, unfussed comfort.
*yikes I really do sound old*

FFS, who infracted this? Get a bloody grip.
Anyhow - I'd like to think I'd have the AMG because its stupid Plus, I love Mercedes return to having something that looks like a proper Merc grill, while it is a bit chromey, I still think it looks great.
Watching paint dry is more exciting than the RS4, even if it is technically good - its got no soul; just like that RS8....

Maybe it has all these features as the common or garden variety BMW driver can't actually drive anymore

Nah, its just the bulbs or the stalk, not sure which, come as optional extras. You do get permanently on front fog lights though.

Most definatly
But in my defence at least i put my money where my mouth is and run a ZX10R, the most un ***** like machine you can get.
Its funny that so many choose the Audi, and its simply because of the 4wd. If the audi was 2wd what would the results be?
