Of course the saving grace of the 360 is the quality of games it already has. Which is without question excellent - Plus of course live, if online gaming is your thing

TBH I cant see a point of getting a console if your not into online gaming
With only a few exceptions, single player games are a mere shadow of what they could be online
Online console gaming is not the direction to be headed in, its the destination where they should already be.
and of course, we know arrived first, and therefore I give my answer to the original question....the Xbox 360

Well, seemingly controversially I purchased a PS3 this morning!
To be honest, it was a heart versus head decision, heart PS3, head 360.
I am actually really pleased with it, got Colin McCrae Dirt, FIFA 08 and ahem Singstar. Downloaded Tekken through the online store along with a few demos and I am very impressed.
I know the xbox has a greater library, but to me I think the hardware is important too. I went to see my friend who has a 360 and a PS3 and the Xbox sounds like an industrial vacuum cleaner, where the PS3 is virtually silent. It won't make much difference when plugged into the surround sound but it's annoying none the less.
I think I may buy an Xbox in the new year too if the games don't improve on the PS3 but I've been looking through the what's coming lists and they all look mighty impressive.
Thanks to all those who made suggestions, I totally see your reasoning and it was a very close call but overall I think the PS3 will be better for me long term.

how unreliable SOME 360's are ......
I have a launchday premium that's still going strong and with almost 24k gamerscore it's been used a fair bit
you made the right choice for you and that's what matters. My opinion on the whole debate is the 360 and PS3 are graphically identical at this point but the PS3 will get better as they work out how to code the son of a bitch. That will take most of the way into 08 until the games are anything better than the 360, and even then it won't be a huge leap.
HD DVD and Bluray are dead formats before they started. Dl'ing is where media is going anything. Watching an HD movie really doesn't warrant the extra cost of the disc/player .... you forget about it after 10 mins into a film.
if your waiting or racing games then GT5 will be no earlier than xmas 08 in Europe .... mark my words fanboys. In that time you have robbed yourself of the Forza 2 goodness and easily the best console racer to date.

yes, the failure rate hasn't been too good. But if we're comparing, let's wait and see how reliable the PS3 will be
personally I went for a 360 - I've had PS range, and always found them "fisher-price"-esque. bit of a toy (IMHO!!!) I'm sure it's going to be a very good machine, but it stumbled into the market rather than exploded (as it should have, what with it being a Sony product, linked to one of THE most successful franchises) which is a crying shame.
Anyhoo, OP - well done for making a choice Hope you're both happy with it
Dan
ps picked up halo 3 (limited edition for £30 yesterday! )

Luckily I've got an Elite as well, so it hasn't stopped me gaming, but I shall be having a "discussion" with MS after xmas...

My launch premium has just gone wrong again. This is the 7th time now. This one only arrived back from MS about 3 weeks ago, and has only been turned on twice since then. 3rd time I turn it on I get the rrod.

I thoroughly enjoy my 360 but as said in a previous post by Wizzbang online gaming is where it's at (although Bioshock and Oblivion were awesome single player games but i think plans for the next Morrowind/Oblivion game is to include online play)

I got the xbox 360 Elite recently and am very impressed!
If you do go for the 360 get one with a Falcon chip; less chance of getting the dreaded ring of death as this chipset runs cooler. I've been quite hard on mine from the outset (very long ssessions on Halo 3 and Assassins Creed) since I've got it and it seems absolutely fine.

I'm surprised you didn't just swap it for a PS3 out of principle....or a Vii mk2

I've got both (and a Wii) and I'd recommend PS3 so personally I think you have made the right choice.
The whole 360 experience has been a poor one for me but it seems the most popular 'proper' console out there.
I got my 4th 360 back from MS in October and other than switching it on to test it worked I haven't played on it since.

Out of interest, what have you been playing? I know a few people who have done the opposite (PS3 is gathering dust and the 360 gets all the air time).

I think most people with both prefer 360 over PS3, I'm definitely in a minority.
I've only been playing stuff you can get on both machines (other than Motorstorm), I just prefer the pad and whole experience on PS3. And similar to the original poster my wife likes to play Singstar.
I think the reliability issue on 360 puts me off these days so I don't buy any new games for it. (although I did order Sega Rally for it yesterday as it was only £17.99 on Play so I will be switching it on again for the first time in months).

If you decide to buy a PS3, Argos are selling the 60GB vers. with 2 of 4 games to choose from and priced at £370 with one controller. Game choice is Ridge Racer 7, Motorstorm, F1 Champ Edition and Resistance Fall Of Man.

I really like my 360, its got its flaws, but I've had it for nearly a year and no problems with mine so far. Other than that; I just don't see the point of buying a PS3 yet, certainly no must have games on it yet.
As for the 360 - Forza 2 and CoD4, a gold Live account, and your life will be complete

I've had my 360 for a year now, haven't used it a great deal due to time issues but have enjoyed it so far.
I bought a PS3 on Friday, mainly because it was a 60gb version, and cost me £199 so I couldn't resist.
So far I love it and if I had to review each quickly it would go like this:
360: nice white design, good extras (official wheel etc), good on live, but too noisy, no wlan (hate having to pay £60 for the wlan adaptor) and feels poor quality.
PS3: quality feel, quiet, nice details but a bit too big physically, love the retro controller as I always preffered the PS controllers.
The games I like are on both systems and I dont do much online gaming yet - I know folk say its the next "big thing" but I hate having to deal with stupid yank teenagers, and feel silly chatting on headsets.
As for DL'ing blu ray films, maybe in 5 years or so but for now I'll buy them

I've found that "silly yank teenagers" are only a problem on some games, Halo 3 instantly springs to mind - not only did the single player bored me to death with its repetitiveness within the first hour, I got fed up even quicker with super high pitched american whining of "omg, you killed me/1 pwned u newb" etc etc... obviously they can't talk l33t speak but you know that its what they're really wishing they were saying.
Other games seem to draw a generally more mature crowd online.

No compensation?
When mine went back the second time it was the tech support that said I was entitled to some - which turned out to be a copy of Viva Pinata...

Its a game I would have never bought myself, but thought I'd give it a go - first hour or so is monumentally dull - I mean, using a shovel to bash rocks in a garden! but it gets a little more strategic after that and gets quite addictive, spoken to others who have played it and they tend to agree.
In fact, if they made a Viva Pinta 2 I think I'd probably buy it...
PS - I'm on a mission to top 40K before I go back to work next week...

Good thing with the 360 is that you can get second hand games now that there are more out there they start getting cheap, also the new ones arent bad, got Assanins Creed for 30 quid the other day.
Still wouldnt mind a PS3, could buy one but I cant justify it to the missus, if I was that bothered I would buy one and put up with the moaning.

PS3 all the way. the noise of the 360 drove me insane for they few days i borrowed it from my lasses brother.
ps3 on the 37" samsung le37r8 is amazing. According to the PS3 magazine the games arent even tapping into 30% of its power !
THink what it will be like in a couple of years !
