Just to bring this thread back to life.

During mapping the car we had a problem, the car wasnt making the sort of boost it should have been. I was only getting a max of around 1.2bar when the target was 1.45bar. Andrew C spent a lot of time trying to get to the bottom of if but it was getting very late. We decided that nothing more could be done and the mapping was finished.

After another visit to Andrew's with a new actuator I was boost levels rise but only by about 0.1bar. Something still wasn't right.

After hearing that another car had suffered similar fate as mine and it was the back boc collapsing I thought it was worth a go at removing the BB and if need be the resonator.
It made no difference to the boost levels but after a 3 minute test drive I had a headache!

The next thing to try is swapping the exhaust housing for a different one.
I will soon be swapping mine for a VF29 housing. Turning my VF35 into a VF30 so I am told.
Hopefully this will cure the problem once and for all!

Whilst the exhaust was off I took the oppotunity to clean it up a little.

Another problem I have been having are my brakes.
I have 4 pots on the front but one of the pistons have seized. I decided to put my old 2pots on and sent my 4 pots away for refurb.

Before

After

These now look fantastic and they have done a really good job. (thanks to Steve Cotton for sorting these out for me)

I have also ordered a full 2 pot convertion from Ian Godney but they havent turned up yet. I asked when I can expect them and I got this reply from Ian.

Hi Mike
It will be a few days , I got the discs , brackets and pads ready , but the calipers I bought in are no good , when I stripped them to recon them , I found that someone has already stripped them , and the threads in the calipers where they are bolted together have all been ripped out , and someone has put liquid metal in the to put the calipers back together , I cannot use them so they have ended up in the bin. I have more calipers coming in tuesday or wednesday and will strip , inspect and sray them and get them built up , that will be friday-ish , so should be with you begining of the following week.
Cheers Ian
Makes my blood boil when people sell on faulty goods....cannot believe someone would risk these brakes failing to make a few quid!!!

I also had to sort out some new sidelights.
I remember reading a thread on here about the LED sidelights and numerous people were impressed. There was also a gorup buy organised IIRC.
Thought I would give them a go and, (in the voice of Borat) I like

They look blue but should be white.

Does you boost hit target and then drop off at higher revs ?

I had this problem albeit with a MD321T and thought it was actuator, turned out to be the standard turbo inlet pipe was not up to the job ! Changed to a Prodrive silcone one and hit boost targets no problem.

Nope not geting to target at all. Tried nearly everything now. Already plumbed the boost gauge in to the inlet pipe to see if its getting vac and sucking shut.

Hi

I may be of some help re boost drop.

Have a ver 4 sti - 1997

Regarding the boost drop i have had the same problem with a vf24 and vf34.
PFC + 3 port solenoid controling boost.

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/9247/lastdynogp7.jpg

I found the factory DV was leaking a little. So went aftermkt but still the drop remained !!

Went to a AVCR and it now holds 1.4 bar at 6000rpm.

Something to consider anyways - good luck.

Hi typeRv4,

I Have already checked the dump valve.....just ran without it....and still made no difference.
Also ran a manual boost controller to check the 3 port = same result.

I will post up the result up when I get chance to change the exhaust housing. (have to pick the doner up first :S)

Cheers
Mike

I run equal length header's full decat vf35 with ported wastegate and uprated acuator produces 320 bhp and 405nm at 1.25 bar may be of some use to you as a reference.

Interested in this (good work btw!) as I'm refurbing my inlet side for about the fourth time in a couple of years. Main problem is trying to get the inlet pipe lined up right for the turbo with 10mm insulating spacers between manifold and heads. So far I've hacked away most of the fuel pipe brackets under the manifold but still can't get enough movement in the inlet pipe to get it close to the turbo.

It looks like now I might have to go the whole hog and dump ALL of the plumbing under there to get a bit of room - meaning the breather crossover pipe, fuel pipes and maybe even DV crossover pipe may have to be replaced in hose rather than hard pipe as they are at the moment. So a parallel fuel rail mod seems a no brainer along with all the rest of that work...I wonder if I could get away without adding hose tails onto my rails? And where have you put your regulator?

Yeah might as well do the fuel mod if the IM is coming off anyway. V.easy to do and cheap.

I put my FPR on the ns strut. you can see it circled below.

Yes I may have to look at something like that. I don't think I've room right there as my FMIC pipework is in the way, but I'll see what I can do.

Well I got round to tackling the exhaust cover change.
Got the cover

Stripped the jacket, up pipe, DP, and v-band but i really struggle to split the turbo. After a bit of wiggling, swearing and scraping knuckles it finally came off.

When trying to put the VF29 cover on I realised that it wasn't going to fit The flange where it meets the compressor cover is differnt leaving a gap of about 5mm meaning the v-band won't go back on......time to put it all back together

Went for a test drive to make sure that everything was ok and it seems that in my struggle with the exhaust cover I have been too aggressive and now the exhaust wheel is picking up slightly on the cover.

I got my rear set up from Ian and wow.......

These are fantastic quality brackets and the calipers look brand new (they arnt).

The old setup vs the new

Difference in disk size.

I have already braded hoses on the front and wanted to put them on the back but I couldnt get the old hoses to budge........so now with round bolds looks like they are staying for the mean time.

Here you go Ian......sorry its not too clever.

Limited room on the drive conditions weren't good and I know the alloys are blocking the calipers. Will do a better job when I get chance.
