why is it people think that coffee has to be bloody strong and dark to be right?
we have those crap grind, froth, and titivate machines at work, costs a fortune and the coffee invariably tastes like sh*te
i drink Carte Noir at home milk and sugar and its bloody loverly.
mind you you need to add the milk before the water

that is the way of old my friend. Due to the fragile nature of china in the good old days the milk was always poured in first so as to relieve some of the stress from the hot water. You are technically correct in that sense.

Oh and here is a good tip - pick up some Lotus Caramlised Biscuits like these (I get them from Tescos):
Lotus Bakeries Deliciously Cosy
I have been known to dunk and eat a whole pack in either tea or coffee on numerous occasions

I find it hard to believe that many people (who arn't mega-rich) drink real Jamacan Blue Moutain on a regular basis. While it is, in my opinon, the finest coffee you can buy - that does come at a significant price!
I'd love to, but its a Christmas, Brithday and other special treats thing for me.
As for Instant - Instant is not coffee. Its some aweful, terrible facsimile of something remotely resembling coffee.
Find a local tea/coffee dealers, pop in, have a chat and get an education. Coffee is just as touchy a subject as wine, and after a while you will be able to tell exactly where a coffee has come from after one mouthfull. The only downfall is that you will also be drawn to the loose leaf tea.

Some great advice, thanks guys
A few instants, I will be trying these ASAP:
Dark Side of the Moon
Carte Noir
Nescafe Kenjara
Alta Rica
However the real choice and quality seems to be in the bean grinding (....insert unsuitable rude joke....)
Recommendations so far:
Hacienda la Esmeralda Geisha
Jamaican Blue Mountain
Nespresso
Monmouth Coffee
Kenya Peaberry
Mexican Liquid Amber Marogogype
Colombian Supremo
Monsoon Malabar
Hawaii'n Kona
Douwe Egberts
Ok, christmas is coming up and I think a coffee machine is the way forward, can't think of any other presents.
So any recommnedations on a coffee machine, I have seen Gaggia mentioned a few times. Is this the Rolls Royce (sorry, Subaru) of coffee machines?

I have a Gaggia Titanium, I managed to get a good deal on mine (Italy Outlet).
After speaking to quite a few people I went for this - some people said they can be unreliable but we have had ours about 18 months now and we have not had any problems with it.
You can get a decent Gaggia bean to cup machine for about £300. The Ti will cost about £490 IIRC.

You might also want to consider Krups, if you buy a machine. Make sure it has a good high pressure for espresso's - most cheap machines simply can't get enough pressure into the coffee to really make the most of it. You really need to be looking at spending towards at least £100 on an espresso machine. If you don't want to go to that much - a good stove-top espresso maker can be bought for around £25 - £30.
I like coffee far too much.![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
I get almost all my coffee and loose tea from The Tea Junction who have their shop in the Castle Mall in Norwich. Give fantastic advice, and they do a very good mail order service as well.

In regular use...
I've got a Francis Francis for espresso based drinks and it does a very good job (as well as looking cool
).
20 quid Delonghi filter machine for bog standard (paper filter on top of the permanent one or it runs through too fast)
An Eva Solo cafetiere for if we're feeling sophisticated and/or scandinavian! (coffee jug with a neoprene jacket - how cool is that?)
Several more in cupboards and boxes but those three are the staples...!

Sainsbury Columbian ... tried so many others, but always come back to this.
It's the best every day coffee IMO. Use three scoops for two cups, or two scoops for a single cup.
