Our business is suffering quite badly due to the postal strike.

Some of our clients are awaiting results in order to obtain life assurance to cover a mortgage. If theres no post and one of our clients dies, the insurance provider is under no obligation to pay out and cover the mortage.

Hardly a slight Inconvenience.

Other clients have money awaiting investment. Some of it is quite large amounts. Our clients are losing out because thier money has not been invested.

On a personal level. My wife is working very hard to get her mobile hairdressing business up and running. Shes had business cards made and paid extra to get them as urgent. Thanks to the postal strike no cards means quite a setback.

I'm sorry whoever is in charge has screwed the staff at RM but its getting beyond a joke now and this strike is unlikely to do anything than alienate the majority from the strikers cause.

On a bad note Andy F shipped my brand new 20G turbo yesterday via special delivery!! I need it for Saturday and now have a nasty feeling that I might just be completely stuffed .

 

Actually Mart, I do. And I still stand by the fact that striking will cause more damage to the post office workers than anything else.

 

So pissing off upper management, and pissing off most of your customers (many of whom will now go elsewhere) is going to improve the Royal Mail's finances such that pension defecit can be addressed, is it?

Ever since the Maxwell pension scandal, there has been significant legislation with regard to pension funds. To say that the RM pension is £2.5billion in defecit because of Royal Mail mis-management is typical unionist speak, and extremely wide of the mark.

As I said, you shouldn't listen to the union.

 

I fail to see how striking is going to help the £2.5billion pension deficit. Do you really think you can go on strike and they will magically pull the funds from the back of the sofa shouting "found it, i knew I had put it somewhere".

 

Point is that they signed up to Terms and Conditions - like retiring at 60 - but they are now being told they need to work until 65 and then they will get a worse pension than the one they were banking on.

A lot of lives can be messed up with things like that - the statistics show that those who retire at 60 live 5 years longer than those who retire at 65.

In this small aspect of the dispute, the bosses are effectively stealing 10 years off the workers (work 5 years longer, die 5 years earlier) ....... 10 years of life is worth fighting for!!

 

I'm not getting a cost of living rise this year. Just as well I'm in a union

 

I hope these lazy fluckers get back to work soon, as I sent my old ' uns a bunch of snaps of their grandsons from Photobox a week ago and of course they're still missing in action

 

they returned to work this morning!!!!!!!!

200million backlog of letters according to the paper this morning, expect half of them to never arrive

 

The rot started years ago as soon as the the Royalmail was opened up to competition it was warned that financal companies would focus on the lucrative parts of the market an leave the less profitable areas alone and look whats happened all the while the Royal mail is forced to do the most expensive part for these companies and deliver the mail.

I see the cushy EU state run mail companies that are due to be opened up to competition in 2011, having seen our fiasco are despeately trying to backtrack
Its a major pita but at least those lazy 4 million on dla and the dole are kept waiting for their benefits, maybe they should be made to do 10 hours a week in the sorting offices to earn their money

 

They will end up like the miners................fecked by the union management. My dad worked in the pits from his 14th birthday for 33 years and then the steel works, he took redundancy and then the steel and mines went belly up, over capacity and competition, he warned me a few years before to get out so I did. Swim with the fish or get eaten by the sharks!

 

well i got some stuff from customs today (finally)

2. cctv auto irs (security is fecked at work while this is broken)
3. price stickers to raise up prices (because of the new min wage + holiday stuff)
4. stuff from my accountant regarding work

In this area, many are still skiving rather than returning to work... Even the unions are asking them to get their lazy pathetic rear ends back on the job...
It's so typical of this area.
I am one of those people who is waiting for life insurance forms following the joint purchase of our home with 'Mrs Abdabz to be'... If one of us croaks it before receiving the forms, the other is on the streets... Marvellous.
The official strike was repugnant and futile enough, but unofficial striking like this does nothing for the cause...
I sincerely hope that those skiving today are sacked for unauthorised absence (if only)...

 

I did like the bit about 'poor practices' by RM staff....

One was that they clock in and out AT THE SAME TIME on arrival at work

The unions (who are tossers BTW) were justifying this action by their members by saying it had always been that way so why change it now

One plus is that all my bills are now not making it to my door mat... RM... keep up the good work!

Not only that when I use to do overtime the managers use to sign your overtime docket to the finish before you had even started and that practise still happems today

Been waiting a week now for birthdays cards.

10 days for something bought from Ebay that was posted on the 1st of October

My contract of employment had to arrive with HR yesterday - posted 1 and a half weeks ago still not arrived - they can accept a fax but how do I do this when it's been POSTED

You signed the contract - Stick to it! If I or any of my colleagues tried to pull this stunt we'd be laughed straight out the door!! I would say our P45's would follow but they wouldn't - You would refuse to deliver them wouldn't you!!!

Get back to work, the cost of stamps alone pays your bloody wages!!

plaster the places in cameras and i would bet quite a bit of stolen stuff would stop.

best thing i ever done at work was put up 8 cameras, some people complain about them, **** em and replace them = easy life

 

I've had two vital letters from the Revenue not delivered recently, one costing me a fine (it was to settle the balance on my self assessment return - I'd forgotten about it!).

Not good.

 

And yet you seem to be defending the RM workers in all this?

No wonder the senior management want to change working practices.

 

StickyMicky, Yes their are cameras all over the office where I work, Devildog it did stop once but the managers found it easier to sign you on and off at the same time, You cannot blame the postmen for that it's the managers who sign the overtime dockets.

Christ, I'm amazed by most of the comments on this thread, most of you have no idea what the postal strike is about, and yet you rush to judge because you might experience some minor inconvience.

Most of you seem to link the strikes to pay rises, well that's because everytime their pay is reviewed, royal mail tries to shoehorn a whole heap of new working conditions in with the measily pay rise.

As I understand it the strike is about the following things (well the main points anyway):

1. Royal Mail want to introduce "flexible working" which as royal mail understand it means you turn up to work at your allotted time (for ease of reference lets say they all work 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday), and they say to you "there's no work for you to do at the moment, come back at 11am and work to your finish time" which then means that you either go home for 2 hours, or sit around at work until you are needed. Oh and by the way you then owe them 2 hours, so after doing this to you for 4 days, they can then say to you "you're coming in Saturday for eight hours to make up the hours you owe us". I know this is unlikely but as royal mail want it, it's perfectly possible.

2. Royal Mail wants to pay their employees monthly instead of weekly, but instead of saying "We know this will be difficult for you initially, so we'll offer you an interest free loan of a months pay to see you through the first month when you'll have no pay" they offer nothing and expect people to simply survive on thin air for a month.

3. As a final kick in the *****, "we want to change the way your pension is calculated, we know you've worked for us for 20 years but we're going to change things so that your pension is worth £10,000.00 less than it would have been". Oh and on the pension front for those of you who have commented on this, royal mail hasn't paid a penny into the pension scheme for years because it's been in surplus. Well what a shock, if you don't pay into a pension for years it will get to a point where it won't meet it's commitments.

Would any of you accept this in your career? I have a quite well paid professional career, and if my employer tried anything like this I would tell them firmly where to insert their job. Just because royal mail employees do a job that most of you apparently think is menial and unchallenging, doesn't mean they deserve to be treated like crap.

Oh and on the competition front, don't make me laugh, without going into the reasons for it ('cos quite frankly I don't understand how it happened), there is no competition, I could set up a postal service tomorrow and charge you 25 pence for a first class letter. What do you think I'll do with the letter? Well I'll take it to the post office where they are obliged by law to accept it, and they charge my delivery company 12 pence per letter, and royal mail have to take it and deliver it, is that competition? If you want competition then lets make it fair, if you want to accept a letter from a customer, you deliver it to its destination, that's fair.

I don't work for Royal Mail, my brother does and he is far from thick!

Sorry I've just come back from a night out, I'm half cut and hopefully some of this rant makes sense!

p.s, my brother freely admits that there are lots of work shy a**holes at royal mail but don't tar them all with the same brush, lots of them work hard and get paid the same as the lazy feekers. I also work with a lazy feeker, but then I get paid twice as much, that's free competition!
