Basically, the point i'm making is don't make a thread telling people not to buy something just because you have had issues when clearly they have millions of happy trouble free units in homes all over the world.
Going by statistics xbox 360 returns are 30 times worse than the competition....

So because the PS3 has no future content that entertains YOU, you decide to rubbish the machine?

I'm not sticking up for microsoft i'm just sick of threads like this with people moaning.

Microsoft are aware they have problems hence the extended 3yr warrenty, they have offered this because a product recall would be too expensive and as stated 70% machines work fine.

The elite is only slightly different internally as a short term improvement until the new chips are in manufacture, remember there are already x amount of the old units already in stock/stores so theres no guarantee of getting the slightly improved version.

As microsoft are aware of the problem so too are the general public, it's been widely covered in the media etc, it's a risk you take, if it goes wrong immediately then shut up moaning and demand the shop replace it as they are obliged to do so, if it goes wrong after the consumer goods act thingy which i think maybe 30 days (not sure), then send it back to microsoft.

You didnt have to buy it and you are fully aware of what may happen so don't bitch when it does. You want reliablity then buy a wii.

I'm not saying it's acceptable, life never is, live with it

Surely you're covered under the three year warranty aren't you Iain? Just phone up MS and get it picked up.

I have. They want £80 because no red lights are shown. I think I might put the money towards a PS3 instead, and get a new xbox in the new year (when the new chipset is available)...

I did not realise the 360 was so fragile.

I have three PS2's in the house, including one of the first ones sold, the Silver update and a slimline. The slimline IS noiser, but none of of them have ever had a problem. Even with the abuse my kids and their friends have given them in 5+ years.

Do you run it horizontally, or vertically (on its end)?

Same here. Just been reading that horizontal running can cause more heat build up. Not sure if it's true or not though...

Surely if it is faulty, it is faulty, regardless of the problem? If MS replaced yours with new machine, it is warrantied. AFAIK, they have to prove the unit is not defective, not the other way round. Ring your local Trading Stanards office.

The original xbox only had a 1 year warranty, (which has long since expired). Replacement consoles do not extend that warranty, so at the end of the 12 months that is it. MS have recently extended the warranty for the 360, but only for one specific problem (i.e. the 3 red lights). Mine isn't exhibiting this symptom, and so isn't covered by the extended warranty. It stinks, but it's legal

Just been looking at the PS3 instead. I want a console, but I can't see any games on it I want to play (now or in the near future). Not sure I want to buy another 360 though, (at least not before the new chipset is available)...

Xbox + power + cup of water + new fuse.

Allow to dry for a few days in a well ventilated room. Turn on, and it should be pretty dead

Alternatively, open it up and get the circuit board out. Microwave for about 1-2 seconds and replace.

Most home electronics have indicators for water damage, and void your warranty. The 360 also has a tamper indicator to show if the box has been opened, and again, if it has, no warranty.

Just got mione back yesterday from repeair, it's the same xbox again with a new motherboard. I have no idea if the extrta heatsink is there, but by all accounts, this make virtually no difference anyway.

I was excitied to get it back, but I hate the feeling of fragility it gives off - I am just waiting for it to go again.

I've just got mine back from MS which was fixed for free and did not have the 3 red rings, some of my games kept freezing and my DVD drive didn't sound good so they replaced the drive and sent it back to me, and my console was just over 1 year old.
