would this be "some 3D maze game" by any chance ?
The ZX81's successor , the ZX Spectrum wasn't powerful enough to run this game as it addressed the screen in an entirely different manner. You can play the ZX81 version now on this emulator vb81's Homepage
Incidentally, your name, reminds me of a really cool PC game - BIOFORGE !!

Elite was indeed way ahead of its time
I absolutley lived for that game ! every spare minute I had I spent on it
Think one of my best memories was finally getting a docking computer so I didnt have to manually dock anymore!
What a pain in the *** that was!!!
Anyone remember the music it used to play when it was docking??

They do mate and end of the year it's having a massive engine overhaul
EVE Online - a massive multiplayer online roleplaying space game - MMORPG
I believe the music for docking in elite was blue danube, was also used in 2001 a space odyssey
YouTube - Strauss - Blue danube waltz
YouTube - eve-online TomB titan

Spectrum 48K! I was lucky to get a 16K version. Best or should I say worst memory of the Spectrum. Was I had so many extras plugged into the back of the Spectrum that I blew 2 CPUs in succession. Anyone remember Kempston Joystick interfaces? This is what I had plugged in:
Kempston dual Joystick add-on, Thermal Printer and 32K RAM pack so I could play the 48K games. They were the days. I wasn't lucky enough to get the micro-drive though...

Two memories - the first was when I fired up the demo of Doom (4 floppy disks!!!) and just sitting there with my jaw hanging open.
For those too young to remember this - it was one of them 'epiphany' moments when you know gaming ain't going to be the same.
Also, I managed to convince an accountant to floodwire his new offices with ethernet and then convinced half a dozen mates to buy network cards (and nicked a couple from work) all to play an AMAZING weekend on our first ever multiplay FPS. What the heck was that game - big guns via power ups and you one could get you turned into a dog which turned out to be the most viscious thing on the map!
I had to take a day off 'sick' on Monday as none of us got any sleep that weekend....

Ahh yes some good memories!
for me;
2 player space invaders and combat on the atari 2600
keying in loads of listings for zx81 progs from magazines (like your computer, remember that?)
3d monster maze on zx81
manic miner on the spectrum
winter games on the c64 multiplayer was always a laugh
playing galaxians defender, gorf and robotron in the arcades (10p a go!)
hooking up music keyboards to an atari ST (was impressive then!)
seeing wolfenstein on a 386 for the first time
plus much more!

Unfortunately, you'll probably find the memories of playing those games are far more entertaining now than actually re playing them lol
I played BBC Elite for hundreds of hours and got to Elite status. Playing it now on BeebEm is dull as sh!te lol

I used to play 2 games that I don't know the names of. One was on a spectrum I think and you had a jeep on the ground and a helicopter and you drove or flew along shooting things. side on scroller.
The other was on a BBC Micro and you were a man and blocks dropped down. you had to build them so you could step up higher and higher.
anybody help me on the names?

What Amiga owner didn't!?
I remember having a cupboard full of broken ones to use as replacement parts. Bloody microswitches kept breaking, or at least the mounts for the microswitches!
And the game that usually kills the majority of them?, Sessi Soccer!
Like Chefdude says, don't ruin the happy memories of those games by going back and playing them now!
