I'm no expert.... but if I log into my Netgear router (generally a private IP like http://192.168.0.1) I can get a list of connected devices.

If you're using ADSL is the 'modem' plugged into the wall or is it via an extension lead?

Hi Alex,

That is the same netgear add as mine and it only shows 1 computer connected which i presume is mine.

The router is on the end of a 5 m lead from phone socket, there is no other way to do it unless i have a longer cat cable and router plugged straight to socket but it has always been like this and ntl was fine and i have seen 1.8 Mbps in the day.

Thanks Paul

Dunno mate, maybe give your ISP a call and see if they can run a test on the line or something?

They tested my line and said i could get up to 8 meg and all is fine,i've just been to a site that says i am 400m from the exchange and my mate is 800 and we can only get 2 meg which is the fastest i have seen but my mate has had 5 meg.
Going to cancel this crap tomorrow and see if i can find a payg to find the best service.

Oh also tried my old speedtouch modem and i was only a touch quicker.

Cheers

I was on 4m with Virgin, but I think they might have sorted out my pricing at long last. I say 'think' as no-one has called me back, as usual, but I wanted them to apply the 4 for £40 offer to my accounts (TV, phone, net and mobile). My DD for this months net has dropped from £25 to £10, so I am assuming they have done what I asked, the downside being my net connection will now be 2m

Test results....

Speed Down 917.41 Kbps ( 0.9 Mbps )
Speed Up 365.35 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

More like a 1m connection if you ask me The other test with the speedo showed 1.5m d/l.

I've wired my ADSL into the main socket now and also removed the wires leaving just 2 and 5 connected. Speed is now a sold 1meg line which is an improvement on what I was getting (Less than 0.5meg).

As I'm on up to 8meg is it feasible for the line speed to increase further?

Read this. Advocated by an ex Bt engineer on here and I followed this guide. Easy to do and the difference it has made is amazing! I couldn't get above 0.5 meg before. since I'm at 2.5 meg and speed is still rising.
