I have just spoke to the Vets, and they have told me they dont know where the blood or bleeding is coming from

He confirmed about the sneezing and runny nose, and which nostril it was coming from

He said there is still a lot of blood in the stomach and is black due to the acid in the stomach

At the moment they have no idea but are still investigating, and I am to phone back at 3pm today for another update

He cant see anything his is nostrils at the moment, but again is still looking, and I dont think the x-rays have shown anything up either at the moment

He hasnt eaten any birds for a while now, he had a wood pigeon about 2 months ago, and he didnt eat that, he just killed it as I had to dispose of it

The last one looked like a starling, but again I disposed of it fairly quickly, he does have a habit of eating clumps of grass but then usually regurgitates this, despite all of this he was still sat there wagging his tail

Poor lab Does not surprise me in the least however that he's acting normal, as in jumping, wagging, etc. Lily, our black lab is similar, even if she's not well she's still bouncy and happy, we believe she's thinking "I know I'm ill, but I still want to show mum and dad I'm happy!" Typical loyal and loving lab really.

Hope the vet finds out and fixes what's wrong with the choccy coloured one

I guess he is like that Markus, he's a lovely big smelly softie and I love him to bits, even if he does annoy me stinking the place out and cacking all over the garden, I know I moan about the mess etc to Steve but i would never ever wish this on him

Ok, this is not looking good at all

I have just spoke at length with the Vet, and he really doesn't know what it is, he is almost certain that it is not a foreign object, and has sent bloods and swabs off for tests, he said he hasn't seen anything quite like this or to this degree without being some basic explanation for the symptoms

He has told me that he may have to refer Scooby to University and then the costs will at the very least be 4 figures, the last one he sent for a grass seed lodged in a nose was 1500 quid

He said there may be a possibility that it is a fungal infection called Aspergillus, and is probably looking like the main candidate

If it is this, it is an 8 week treatment and starts off on tablets, and if this doesnt work the dog has to be hospitalised and have holes drilled in his head to drain off the fungal infection and is very expensive to treat

He said the bleeding has stopped for now, and he can come home with us tonight, or he can send him to the overnight emergency vets

If we take him home, and then during the night have to take him to the emergency vets, then the cost will rocket, if he is referred and sent via my vets then it will cost approx 35 quid, unless he starts bleeding during the night then the costs again will rocket

They gave us an estimate of 300 pounds, we have now reached that amount with the work they have carried out upto now

He has had blood tests, xrays and swab tests, and is quite down at the moment, but hasnt been round too long from the aneasthetic

The Vet is doing more heamatology to check his blood as it should be stable as he hasnt bled for a while today, but if it has dropped any, then it means he is still bleeding internally somewhere, but they currently cant find where

He has almost ruled out Rat Poison, as this would affect the lungs, and the xray show his lungs to be perfect

The only other thing he mentioned was a nasal tumour, but he said this really only affects dogs of over 10 years old, and has never seen anything like that in a 2 year old dog

He said he has looked upto 3 inches down the nostrils, but cant look anymore as he doesnt have an endoscope, but he could potentially cut open his nose, but he doesnt think that will achieve anything at the moment

He is waiting for test results which take a day or two to come back, and he said also that if it is apergillus then the cultures dont always grow so very difficult to diagnose

I was struggling to stay composed whilst on the phone, and I am sat at my desk in work struggling to hold the tears back

I really dont know what to do now at this point in time

Thanks for taking the time to post in such detail. I am sure there a lot like me who are willing you and junior on

I'd never heard of Aspergillus (Mrs had!) but Google tells me that it can be present in gardens

Obviouly serious, if it is that, but many pull through and 2 year old Labs are tough old devils.

Do you have other dogs/animals? d

Yes, we have a Royal Python who is always in his Vivarium

I have a Fish Pond, but that is netted

We have a few fish tanks in the house, and also a Hamster

The Vet told me many dogs pull through Aspergillus but it is a very unpleasant experience for the dog, and very costly too, especially if the tablets dont work

As it involves drilling the head, and draining the fungal infection twice a day, and they are hospitalised for 10 days, and have to stay on all kinds of tubes attached to them

I have to decide in the next half an hour whether to have him home with us tonight, or leave him in the vets under observation overnight

That's horrible... really upsetting when a pet is ill. I had a similar dilemma with my cat a few years ago - thankfully didn't have to make a decision about how much I could spend, because it turned out the vet could do the operation (and not the specialist). But it was a horrible position and I'm very sorry to see your pooch in trouble.

All you can do is do your best for him and keep hoping. I hope the poor chap improves.

Steve & Donna,
Hard as it must be to not have him at home with you, I'd let him stay at the vets. They can monitor him and do anything that needs doing, whereas if he's at home and something needs doing you'll need to move him to the vets, taking time and as we all know, timing can be critical.

Will there be someone at the vets with him? I'd be inclined to let him stay there overnight if there is. I know it's hard, but everything would be at hand if needed. I hope he pulls through. Rosie sends him purrs and licks (but she said don't tell her cat mates).

I know, this is what the Vet said is that he will be monitored throughout the night

If we brought him home, he could bleed for 8 hours solid before we know anything about it, and it may be too late then

The Vet has said he has already lost of lot of blood and it is very serious now, although the bleeding has stopped, he still has a bit in his stomach

What he doesnt know is if he is still bleeding internally

I think it will probably be best to leave him in overnight, just in case he has the same kind of attack overnight as he did last night

Im almost certain he cannot lose that amount of blood again and have any chance of survival

Although he did also say to me that even if it is this fungal infection you cannot stop the bleeding until the treatment starts to work and its an 8 week treatment

Really sorry to hear this.. don't give up hope yet though, dogs are pretty resilient and as the root cause is still unknown it could still be something small that is uncovered...

I really genuinely hope things work out for you.....

Just spoke to the Vets again

He has told me there is no way he can come home now

His pbc was 27 and now it has dropped to 21 but he hasnt bled all afternoon

He has lost over 50% of his blood, and if he bleeds again there is nothing they can do, and he will effectively bleed to death and wont make it through the night

He said they could possibly do a transfusion but its 250 quid a litre using artificial blood, but he has lost that much blood he wont survive losing any more and even giving him a transfusion, and he bleeds again they cannot do anything at all to stop the bleeding

He told me in the 22 years he has been practising he has only ever come across Apsergillus 3 times, and 2 of the dogs had treatment but tablets failed and were hospitalised but made it through but was incredibly expensive

the 3rd couldnt afford it and opted out of the treatment and had their dog put to sleep

He said he may start him on the treatment with Anti Fungal agents but they are so slow acting that it is really a waiting game to see if he makes it through the night

He will speak to me regardless tomorrow as if he makes it through the night, we will have to make a descision on whether to continue with the treatment

He is only 2 years old FFS, this shouldnt happen to him

I would do the same for my dog as I would my sons or daughters. Part of the family and therefore no expense spared with regard to their well being. If a four figure trip to a veterinary university is required then do it, you'll find the money somehow or other Just a shame you don't have insurance

Best of luck, hope he pulls through.

Steve and Donna, I'm so sorry to hear this, my fingers are crossed for a positive outcome. It's so horrible knowing that the poor dog is staying away from you over night not knowing what's going on but I guess you just have to put your trust in the vet on this one.

Steve & Deeks

Have just sent you a PM elsewhere, but I am really upset to hear about Scooby. The pics I have seen of Scooby with Yoda, show what a lovely big softie dog he is. And the ones of him as a pup ...

It's horrible when they are unwell, you feel so uselss, but just remember hHe is in the best place, and getting the best care.

I hope he gets sorted quickly.

Sonic and DK, Aspergillosis is supposed to have reasonable success rate, if not 100%. Scooby has lost a lot of blood, and we will see how he recovers. We are keeping our fingers crossed for Scooby.
