Just gone through this thought process for the same reasons. Ended up buying a 330d tourer purely because I didn't want an auto (you can't have a manual 335d). Then DMS chipped it to the same power and torque as the 335d so best of all worlds and cheaper - works for me.

Of course DMS can chip the 335d to over 330bhp so that would make it very very fast

 

Yes some people do. I'd rather have a nice soft ride for transporting my baby around, than a rock hard one. But each to their own.

You strike me as the sort of person who struggles to see things from other people's point of view (and post without highlighting one word in bold) though, so I won't argue with you

I have traded in my 05 STi for a new 335i M Sport coupe. The 3 litre twin turbo is superb. I never thought I would get rid of the Subaru, but it's surprising how your view of cars alters slightly as you get older.

I am now officially an arrogant to$$er or is that only true when I am driving the BMW.

 

Andy - I think the manual 'box can't handle the torque of the 335d!

I prefer the Touring shape but then I like the stealth look.

 

like matty said, bmw dont have a manual box strong enough, i think the engine suits a auto, plus they put a very good/fast changing auto in there anyway

 

will be slow compared to Audis upcoming 3.0TDI Quad Turbo. Also audi's next A4 will be bigger than the competition, meaning its not only quicker but has alot more space.

335d, looks a good buy now, and then the next Gen A4 gets revealed

 

Because I like cars that handle well.

 

Maybe... though I've still yet to drive an auto I didn't hate.

That said, I really struggled to find a manual 330D - most were autos, so I guess if that's what people buy, that's what they'll make first.

I still think it's a great shame, though, the 6 speed manual box is a peach.

I've driven many Audis from boggo to top line models.
All well made, all with as much feedback and driver involvement as an RC car.

Sounds like the new R8 has finally cracked it but it's taken a long time.

And the S5 got trashed by several journos.

Oh yes, read that line again - I've DRIVEN many Audis, not copied and pasted from some Audi **** website.

Audi S5 hasnt been "thrashed" at all. The S5 has ticked every box it aims for. Its a complete and utter success

Now about those ugly and soon to be slow compared to the competition BMWs

 

BMW 335d

And that thrashes the S5 how? Its clearly obvious to me that the S5 is the more rounded vehicle whilst the 335 is a one trick pony!

It was a quick cruiser that was useful on the twisties and a HEAP better than the old S3 and A3 3.2.

As I said, get yourself to Specsavers and get saving those pennies for some glasses.

 

Since when is the slower car with the crappier interior better?

 

Old S3 - heavier, less power (225bhp, mine was running at 260bhp), softer suspension, less steering feedback.
A3 3.2 - No attempt at being sporting - rolly and crap to drive.

See I DROVE them all.

the 335d really suits the auto box, lets face it your not going to buy it for track days, your going to buy it for mile munching.

It's a bit sad I know (having two BMWs, but we also have an E46 BMW 320 Cd with a fairly decent boot. TBH the boot space in the E90 tourer we borrowed didn't look a lot bigger than the E46 Coupe.

 

My mate picked his upon the 1st march this year and 2 days later we went to germany for 10 days, 3500 miles later what a great car equally happy at 150 on the autobahn or chasing m3's round the ring (after it was run in obviously) as well as pootling round the back roads. Auto box is great and so effortless and never felt tired even after spending all day driving (went to 8 countrys).
This car replaced his chipped 330 diesel and is a vast improvement on an already great car, will see off most things and still do twice the MPG of my scoob.
This one has also been chipped now and the power/torque is unreal.
If only i had a spare 42 grand

 

I've got a 335d M Sport Touring which I bought new in December last year.

To date the car has way exceeded expectations. The engine produces amazing torque which means effortlessly rapid progress; for a road car on today's roads unless you're a complete loon you really will never need any more 'go'. Apart from pulling away at tickover it doesn't even sound very diesel-like. The auto gearbox is super-slick and quick changing and has paddles as standard if you feel the need to take control. Handling wise the car feels beautifully balanced, and the controls are almost porsche-like in their feel and weighting.

The car has loads of lovely little touches, e.g. lights under the doorhandles which come on when you lock/unlock the car (great at night), tailgate glass which opens independently of the main hatch. Even the indicators (touch them for 3 flashes) are great once you're used to them.

So far I'm averaging approximately 35mpg. On a run at 80-ish mph you'll see over 40mpg. Insurance is peanuts too at just £340/year. So far it's proving to be laughably cheap to run.

Overall I'd have to say it's the best car I've ever owned. As a family proposition it's fantastic. Even just considering which car is most fun on a spirited drive, my previous RS6 wouldn't get a look-in if I had the keys to the 335d, and I wouldn't feel particularly short-changed compared to my old 996.

Options wise I specified professional sat-nav (I just don't want to mess around with tom-toms), panoramic roof, leather, xenons, hi-fi and a few other bits and pieces. Came in at just under £37k after the ~12% discount which my local dealer gave me. If you go for one do make sure you get the panoramic glass sunroof. It's a £1k option, but it completely transforms the interior of the car, especially in the rear. Our kids love it - definitely the number one option from the list.

Are the 535d's a LOT better than the 530d? Not just in terms in performance, but in any other area? Suspension etc?

I've not looked into it fully, but is it just the M-Sport editions that get different sussy?

 

the 0-100 for the 535d is 15secs, and 530d is 19.4 secs, so 5 secs to 100 is a big difference, its the twin turbo setup that makes the 535d so good, the 530d only has 1 turbo, both 3 L engine.

the diesel m sport models have harder suspension than the m sport petrol, but not sure if 535d is harder than 530d??
