I've been contracting for over 10 years for a number of different Organisations (mostly blue chip) - It is a state of mind, I don't worry too much about one contract finishing as there is invariably another just around the corner.(Touch wood)

It's allway's healthy to apply for any internal vacancies that arrise in any company, provided your equipped with the skill's for the role.
However, as an operations manager for a very large gobal company, I have many people in postions who are very effective & by their own admision do not want to move to any dizzy height, as their happy in their current role.
During the last twelve years I have progressed slowly through my current company & am happy with my position. Yes I could aspire to bigger things, but I'm happy enough in my role & the remit it covers.
One benefit of working for my company is that you can access most area's & contribute to making a difference outside of your day to day role, differences that help to make the comapny a success & are also recognised by the companies VP's & CEO's etc.
One thing to asses before you consider to make a move to a higher level, where applicable can you surround yourself with quality people & build a strong team, because if you can it all help's to make your move easier.
