How do you intend to carve in 3d relative to a 2d representation? Is there a methodology or is it dependent upon artistic integrity?

Excellent question, Root. Well, I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I'm familiar enough with the anatomy of the thing, and enough photographs and scientific drawings exist showing the various specimens from every angle, that I could carve it completely in 3d. Unfortunately, for complete accuracy, I don't think the block is nearly thick enough. That said, this is intended to be, first and foremost, a piece of art, and I think I wouldn't be happy with only one side carved. I'm going to rough out the profile on the bandsaw on Monday, and get a feel for the proportions across the widest part. T rex is very wide across the jugals, whereas Daspletosaurus and other tyrannosaurs seem far less so. I will probably carve it in 3d but compress the thickness somewhat.

Well, I've just been tip-tapping at it today, so not much progress. I'm going to attack it with the bandsaw tomorrow.

Do you mean a router or something? No, all with gouges and chisels, though I did drill down a bit in places to remove material a bit more quickly.

I'll watch this with great interest. My Dad used to be very good too. He was a fantastic artist with lots of patience He was also a 6' 2" Miner, hands like shovels, yet he could paint an intricate picture and do similar precise work like yours.

Bet it takes a lot of patience to do that. I'll be keeping an eye on this and look forward to the finished result.

That's pretty cool. But may I suggest, if you have so much time on your hands you should come over to my place. I have plenty more useful tasks I could give you.

Anyway, I do my sculpting digitally.

So much better...

That's excellent, but you'll never be able to feel it, walk around it or smell it. Knackers to virtual reality, we've got real reality all around us.

True enough.

No dried and split fingers. No bruised or skinned knuckles. No special space required to make an enormous mess. No accidental loss of precious digits is required either

And the best part - I acually get paid for producing my 'virtual' digital masterpieces..

Personal satisfaction is more important than money. If I do something that makes me and others happy, that's worth more to me than cash

Don't get me wrong - I have a degree in traditional sculpture.

If I knew I could make a living from that I would be tempted. I love interacting with real materials as much.
