Big chunk of oak, what shall I carve out of it?
Excellent question, Root.
Well, I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I'm familiar enough with the anatomy of the thing, and enough photographs and scientific drawings exist showing the various specimens from every angle, that I could carve it completely in 3d. Unfortunately, for complete accuracy, I don't think the block is nearly thick enough.
That said, this is intended to be, first and foremost, a piece of art, and I think I wouldn't be happy with only one side carved. I'm going to rough out the profile on the bandsaw on Monday, and get a feel for the proportions across the widest part. T rex is very wide across the jugals, whereas Daspletosaurus and other tyrannosaurs seem far less so. I will probably carve it in 3d but compress the thickness somewhat.
I'll watch this with great interest. My Dad used to be very good too. He was a fantastic artist with lots of patience
He was also a 6' 2" Miner, hands like shovels, yet he could paint an intricate picture and do similar precise work like yours.

True enough.
No dried and split fingers. No bruised or skinned knuckles. No special space required to make an enormous mess. No accidental loss of precious digits is required either
And the best part - I acually get paid for producing my 'virtual' digital masterpieces..
