Theres nothing wrong with the paint Singh, I'm told these are monster (not old enough for dealership insurance for these yet), enjoy

Thanks mate. I was getting a little worried.

They did a re-run of the new M5 on best of top gear the other night. I'm liking that 'M' button

The extending seat bolsters is a nice touch, I'd just sit on the drive, saving fuel, and watching them come in and out

I found they never gripped me hard enough. I prefer turning them off, and then manually sucking them in to really suck me into the seat.

Love turning them on for passengers though. One of which demanded I turn them off as it was making him feel sick!! lol

Lovely M5 mate - very envious

and given the choice between Merc or BMW, IMO I'd always go for the latter.

I notice that Mercedes proceeded to add the 4 (token) philips screws to your rear number plate too. When you're spending over 50k on a car (or whatever the price is) can't they afford to add plastic covers or better still use a sticky pad

Just check out the amount of Mercs like this

Perhaps I'm being pedantic but it's one of my pet hates

(useless info alert..lol)

Unlike many where some monkey drills a couple of holes through the metalwork and sticks in two crappy self tappers all of which ultimately rusts (my pet hate) or fall out if the panel is plastic because the self tappers are overtightened, Mercedes rear panels come (or certainly used to) with the 4 plastic plugs already there into which the oversized screws are placed.

Because the screws are oversized, the plastic covers don't fit

Completely failsafe and the best attached numberplates of any marque.

But not the most asthetically pleasing, I'd agree.

Personally, I'd rather take my chances and have the plates stuck on.

I must say the new M5 does almost look a bit too similar to a regular 5-series. The previous model had very distinctive wheels which set it apart, yet the wheels on this week seem almost identical in design to those offered to 'lower' models in the range which seems odd.

Still wouldn't say no to one however , but I do feel residuals won't hold up quite as well as they did for the previous M5

And what residuals are those....... Last M5's were awful (sorry Deep).
One of the saving graces of the 'new' M5 is that they have up until now held up.

There is however a facelift 5-series about to come out - hope the M5 holds up - its a great car for sure.

Residuals for the old M5 were great initially with nearly new ones fetching quite a lot over list for a while (a mates Dad at the time sold one for 10k over list after delivery), then once supply caught up prices obviously fell quite sharply.

They've tried the old limiting supply trick with the new model, yet used prices dont seem to exactly be at a premium, and now supply has pretty much caught up and a (likely fairly extensive and no doubt complete revamp of the rather-ungainly front end) facelift is around the corner used prices will surely take quite a hit.

If I was after a performance saloon I'd be getting my name down for a face-lift 535d m-sport with leather and big alloys! Saying that I bet the M5 is fantastic and Deep is no doubt loving it!

Pete, M5 looks as much like a 520d series as a M3 looks likes a 316, a RS4 looks like a A41.6tdi etc.

The wheels are unique to the M5 and the massive crossdrilled rotors behind them don't look much like any other 5 series to me. Nor do the twin exhaust pipes. To some extent the whole point is that you don't want it to stand out too much, if I wanted to attract attention I'd buy a Ferrari.

The biggest difference though is this

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...tos/car021.jpg

And thats what its all about!

Sensitive about a car? Who me?

As for depreciation, I've gone into it with my eyes wide open. You won't see me complaining about the residuals of this car, I'm expecting the worst, anything else is a bonus. It comes with the territory when owning cars like these.

Pete, the revamped front end is almost identical to the present one.

The 535D is a fantastic car and may well be a 'performance saloon' but I was after a 'super saloon'. ie a car that says this on the speedo

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...tos/car018.jpg

The 535D does 0-60 in 6.5 and 0-100 in 13.5s. The M5 does it in 4.7 and about 10s. Not comparable cars really.

Sensitive about a car? Who me?

Can't go above 70 in the UK though

Remove the limiter and get over to Germany, and see how low the MPG can go

Sad, I know , but I found out the hard way when a 1 year old Vauxhall Nova I had what seems like a hundered years ago had to have a tailgate respray due to rust caused by self tappers straight into the bodywork.

I've been somewhat retentive about it ever since

Interesting thread - thanks for sharing information, it's interesting to see hear your rationale behind the purchase. This would be my car of choice at the moment if I had to choose an 'everyday' car and had the budget.

How do you remove the speed limiter - is it a dealer set jobby?

My Speedo used to hit 168, then that was it game over. And believe me that wasn't enough (probably 155ish GPS). Was very annoying.

Who says you can't? Ever heard of something called a track?

Hi Raj,

No I didn't. Not even sure if it is out yet. The supercharged version will probably make a great second hand buy.

Shocking mate. Luckily I only do about 3k miles/year. If I did 10k+ I'd have to sell the car to be honest.

UK tracks are great, but your not going to find many that will allow you to try out your top end.

And if you can't find *any* reason to visit Germany other than our roads I suggest you get a guide book!!
