[QUOTE=Paul Habgood;6779681]Tactial and strategic nukes, what do you think these do, just hit the baddies, wipes them out, release the hostages then all the radiation just dissappears up its own ***?

Very good point well put.

It is alarming, the total lack of respect some people have for the lives of innocent people.

Bit of a coincidence that tension is getting worse between Iran and the west (UK & USA) and all of a sudden Iran takes UK soldiers hostage that "Iran says" were in thier waters.

Perfect excuse for those looking for a fight (UK&USA) and making sure no one else gets thier own personal petrol station (Iraq). Invading on the basis that our troops were captured - how convenient

send in jimmy krankie.

honestly, the iranians have just done this to divert attention from the nuclear issue at a critical time. classic distraction and very astute. they're madder than a bag of snakes.

jaw-jaw, get the marines back. sit tight till ahmedinijad visits a western country, then off the little b@stard. he deserves it for his choice in millett's windcheater jackets alone ...

They probably were in Iranian waters right enough. Apparently the woman was driving!
What really gets me about todays reports is the fact they are making such a song and dance about the female that has been captured and her male companians get a fleeting mention, very disrespectful to the guys. Typical of society now a days, bleating on about sexual equality then when it suits them use it to tug on heartstrings and make a bigger deal out of a situation.
FWIW I hope they are all safe and well and we'll see them released some time soon.

a little off-poste [as opposed to off-piste] but doesn't it strike anybody else as wrong that we allow women on active duty in a war zone? equality is all very well. i appreciate that recruitment is difficult, i appreciate that some women want to serve in the same capacity as a man and i appreciate that women have their own unique talents for mayhem when push comes to shove. but surely not when it comes to jobs that entail serious, in-your-face unpleasantness and danger of death, mutilation and possible mistreatment upon capture?

call me an old fashioned MCP but it just goes against the natural male instinct to protect a female. i wouldn't deliberately put my wife in harm's way, no way sirreee. she'd stick a hyacinth down the barrel of her rifle, insist on mingled autumnal shades and burnt umber camouflage, want a ghillie suit with blonde highlights, lay a minefield in the shape of a heart and think an IED was a new form of birth control - despite being very handy with a kitchen knife. and be a passenger in an APC without air-con and a backlit vanity mirror on the sunvisor? never. war is man's invention and the front line is man's work.

i'd hazard a guess that the biggest single worry the male marines have is how their lady oppo is being treated [according to reports, she appears to have been isolated from the blokes].

The threat of rape is often brought up as an argument against women in front line forces, but it is utter nonsense, in the ME a male prisioner is just as, if not more, likely to be raped by male captors than a woman is.

The people who spout nonsense like this usually simply struggle to believe that a woman can be braver and more capable in Combat than they would be.

Women are not allowed in "Front Line Combat Arms" in the Army, but, where is the frontline???? London, Tehran, NewYork, Belfast, Cardiff???????????

Even a driver in a convoy with a truck full of rice is potentially a target, so where do we draw the line

As a military man I feel that a government that puts females in danger is morally corrupt but EO dictates otherwise (two daughters).

I know a number of female soldiers that are head and chest above their male counterparts and they can produce some healthy competition, much puffing out of the male chest. Female helicopter pilots are better at multi -tasking!!!!!!! Best mate with t*ts, and a potential sh*g, but again problems will ensue!

But, men will protect a woman when she is injured instinctively, two men will try and assist a woman but one if a bloke is injured.

The Navy have, for some time, employed women on their ships, it has not been all plain sailing (pardon the pun) and this just highlights the problem.

The fanatics have put up a reward for the capture of Britsih Army Females in Iraq

Blue Dragon - The whole thing about males attending to wounded female counterparts is a training issue. Last time I checked most of the things we do on Op's arn't natural instinct yet are trained in/out of us.

Several units that exsist in the British Forces have females in "prone to capture" roles - and they are often essential for those units to carry out that role.

It is only the attitude that females are some sort of precious little things that can't look after themselves that results in the response you are talking about.

No individuals life or well-being is worth more than another on the basis of their sex.

Dragoon please, I agree but when your in a mamby pamby REMF unit as you may well know females are a real issue. The training out thing is just that training, when push comes to shove, beware!

And did I not say that I know of females that are far and away better soldiers than men????

Thats why Armoured/Recce/infantry units don't have females in fighting roles.....Vive la differance!

I apologise for missing the "o" out - I know how tetchy you lot get

Females are hardly more of an issue in a "remf" unit than many male soldiers who are a waste of oxygen. I know its a contentious issue in the larger Army, but the fact it works in more specialised units suggests to me that there is no real reason why it shouldn't work in the Army as a whole.

Rape is a problem for all sexes, as mentioned before.

The problem is that "western" media are milking it (pun intended....not) and are trying to make the Iranians look like animals.

As much as a good nuke or two would do them, they are socially evolved.

Strange that she should be doing a job like that when she is the mother of a 3 year old.

Because women should stay at home looking after the children like good little things? Or is it just as strange that Fathers of 3yo children are doing that job?

Didn't realise that the military was only acceptable for Singlies..

She's obviously a professional who is dedicated to her job; and should highlight the sacrifices that military personnel make for their chosen career; usually to the ignorance of the civillian population.

oh come on, get off your high horse and read the post properly. i made a wholly subjective point - happily conceding women's abilities, plus a lighthearted comment about my wife. this is known as humour. i didn't say they can't do it; they clearly can. i simply posed the question of whether women in combat is right as an idea NOT that they aren't as capable as their male colleagues and so shouldn't be there.

personally, i'm just not comfortable with the morality of placing women directly in harm's way because i'm a little old fashioned. that doesn't make my opinion "some utter junk" and it's not a "nonsense" point. it's a valid moral challenge - as blue dragoon noted.

judging from your other posts, you're in the services, yes? i'm not but i nonetheless take your point and respect the first-hand experience you seem to have.
