I've had three screens from Autoglass in just over as many months on my Classic WRX!

First one had the wrong tint despite confirming the correct one, the second one had the right tint but leaked and was broken when removing it owing to a brand new chip and the third one is the right tint and appears not to leak. They also repaired the scratches they caused to both wings during the second installation!

All of this work was carried out under the "lifetime guarantee" of the first screen with virtually no argument. The added aggravation was a pain though as they only do guarantee work in their workshops.

I rang Autoglass late this afternoon as I'd heard nothing from them. They have ordered a new screen via a Subaru dealer, won't be with them until Saturday morning. I asked about the other bits needed too. Was told they should all be with it too. Keeping my fingers crossed.

If you can get a good repair person(note good as there are shady ones out there), you will retain your factory seal and at no cost to you so you have nothing to loose. If repaired correctly it is the preferred option for me anyway.

I do find all this very interesting reading all these peoples views on windscreen companys. What I will say is yes there are a lot of very bad fitters out there working for ALL companys that don't really care about the job they do or don't have the experience which then results in peoples pride and joy being damaged. And in the fifteen years I have been fitting I have seen some very bad jobs indeed but also mostly good work. What i'm trying to say is that its only a small handfull that give the rest of us a bad name and as with everything people only ever remember their bad experiences.
But there are a lot of people like myself who treat every car how they would like their own treated whether it be a fifty quid banger or a 500k minter which is with mucho care and respect. Every car gets the same treatment which with me is 100% every time and I am proud of every single job I do.
What I will say is if you are not happy with the branch you are dealing with you can request that you go to another branch like Bedford maybe.

Also just so everyone knows a chip repair doesn't make it invisible. It just stops it from spreading but you can still see it. But it is you who decides cos its your car and thats what you pay your insurance for...

All I trying to ensure is my car has a new screen fitted with the correct one and made to look like how it came out of the factory. I could of used RAC Autoscreens instead. I chose Autoglass because its nearer home, within walking distance of work and the website says OEM glass used compared to RAC who have their own factory. I had a couple of screens replaced on a 205GTI many years back and noticed the pillars had marks left on them. I had a couple of chips replaced on a 306 GTI-6 after I sold the 205 and was happy with them. Yes I knew they were there but unless you looked very closely you probably wouldn't know.

If MK branch do as promised I'll be happy. They say new screen is coming via Subaru dealer so should be identical make as I've got now. What surrounds etc are replaced. I was concerned that the scuttle panel ? around the wipers wouldn't fit back properly.

RAC do make their own glass whereas Autoglass use OEM glass and bond. Sometimes there are issues with VIN notches but all glass should be checked prior to stripping car to make sure its right.
As for the rubber trim it will be exactly the same.
The plastic scuttle panel has to be removed along with the wipers and will go back as it should, so the only reason for it not fitting correctly after is if any of the retaining clips are broken whislt removing it.

Should go OK then. After I asked to check for he VIN notch this morning to find it was wrong I'm sure it will be correct as its coming via Westaway Motors Northampton. I wouldn't of thought it would be different to what is fitted in Japan unless you know different?

As far as I know the new jap motors have the same screen apart from classics so you should be just fine.
The early WRX had a different screen to UK turbo 2000 cars.
If it is coming from Subaru dealer then it will have been ordered from your chassis number and will be for your car.

Westaway have serviced my car in the past so will have my chassis number and I know IM have it on the database because I went thru Westaway/IM over a battery problem. Autoglass brought up my insurance details from just the reg number so I can't see it being wrong. Will let you know how it goes.

A windscreen repair when done correctly at worst will look like a dried rain drop and not noticable unless examined very carefully. If it doesnt look as good as that, its being done wrong.

Only in terms of the tint although it turned out that my mine (JDM Classic WRX MY99) was a UK tint not a JDM tint!

From memory, mine is a green tint in lieu of brown.

Just collected the car from Autoglass, all done OK except mirror seems a bit wobbly. Genuine Subaru screen as it came via dealer and has Subaru printed on it. Also now got black sun block bit between the sun visors which I didn't have before.

I had my screen done at Warrington Autoglass. No VIN slot and no black bits behind the mirror!

Never thought to ask beforehand. Will know in future though!

My windscreen went on MY06 last Thursday, the gut at auto glass asked if it had a vin strip etc etc.


They ordered the screen in and thanks to this thread I checked it before he fitted it, and it did not have the vin slot .

he blamed Subaru, and went away ordering me a new one.

Hopefully sould be here tomorrow.

So, are RAC Autoscreens not good then because they make their own glass?? My insurance company gave me the RAC number to phone. Do I have to go there?

I'm having my STi windscreen replaced by RAC Autoscreens later this week. I've asked for a dealer supplied screen to be fitted and was told that was no problem so long as the insurance company was happy with it - they were .. like for like. I was told to check as it was likely to be more expensive.

Suppose you need to specifically request it.

Ultimately, I guess Subaru have their screens made by a supplier rather than make their own, but its just peace of mind that you have an original screen fitted, but I doubt there would be any quality issues with the actual glass (other than VIN windows and mirror blanking).
