Time would be better spent searching for intelligent life on this planet first

Who's to say the life as we don't know it would be no less common? With this in mind, all your comments below take an Earth-bias view with you showing that for life to come into existence, you need to have an exact replica of earth / sol system. I just don't accept that that is the only way life can evolve.

The planet has to be right distance from the Star (sun) If we were a few light minutes either side of where we are, life wouldn't have got off the ground.
True for "earth-like" life, but would alien life necessarily need the same light/heat as earth life? There's talk of possible life in the oceans of Europe, and one of Saturn's moons (i forget which, possibly Enceladus). There was even talk once of life in the Jovian clouds. Now, whether there is life or not is not the actual point. The point is that it's possible for life to live there, in conditions vastly different, but it's not going to be anything like earths.

The planet has to have a molten core
Why?

The star has to be the right kind of star
Do you mean right as "Sol-like" (ie G3). I think that it needs to be pretty stable, but again, I don't think it needs to be the same as the sun.

Its quite possible the planet has to have another planet the size of Jupiter and saturn in its system to act as shield against asteroids and comets. Similarly it may have to have a moon for the same reason.
Again, I don't agree with this necessarily. It's true that the Gas Giants (Jupiter in particular) has attracted a lot of debris from the sol system, but the majority of that was during the formation of the solar system when life was not present.

Thats just scratching the surface, there are millions of variables that all have to be exactly right for life to exist. Just saying "there are billions of planets therefore there must be life" doesn;t work.
There have to be millions of variables for "earth-like" life to exist on another "earth-like" planets, agreed, but as I say, you don't need to recreate the earth to get alien life. That's the whole point. It's alien...
