.but, but, but.. its! its! Its the same colour as an STI!!!!

If you can't tell this is a serious pet hate of mine and has been for every car I've ever owned.

I hated it when I had my Saxo VTR and people badged Westcoasts as VTRs, and VTRs as VTSs..

STI may still be a WRX..

However..

A WRX is not an STI.

By that warped logic every Audi A4 is an RS4...

..Every Lancer an Evo...

Amazing formula that works for most marques.

What is the actual differences between a jdm wrx (mine) and an sti?

Once saw an STi Type UK with a spec C badge under the Type UK badge. Puzzled the hell out of me.

Sat behind the guy in queuing traffic for a while then went slowly past him when I filtered off ... tried to catch his eye but he was looking everywhere but at me ... wonder if he was a bit embarrassed?

And lets face it - the only people who know the relevance of the Spec-C are other clued up Impreza owners or really really geeky petrol heads who remember every line of Evo magazine.

And those two groups of people are not going to look at it and go "ooh, look, he has a Type-UK STI thats a Spec-C - wow, haven't seen one of those before - maybe it was a special custom order they assembled in Kenya for him??"

They look at him and go - "C##K. Stuck that random Spec-C badge on his car for no reason at all other than provide ammunition for us to mock him with"

My WRX is badged as it came (ie as a WRX), and I wouldn't want STI stickers/badges on it TBH.

I love the fact that some unfortunates think it is only a WRX (especially if they've read some of the crap that gets spouted on here about them..) and then end up looking silly because they get handed their **** on a plate..!

All the more amusing if it's a snobby STI PPP/TEK 3 owner..

There's also the fact that thieving ******* think the same and don't really give it a second look once they see the ironing board on the boot..

WRXs should not have STi badges, it's pretentious

however, I think the WRX bashing is a bit unfair..

Later model WRXs and STis don't have a huge amounts of difference engine internal wise (UK models at least)(yes the STi has AVCS etc) but not much else is different and when you consider that a lot of modded STis have the bits that make them an STi taken off eg suspension, turbo (list not exhaustive) and that highly modded WRXs will have similar upgrades then the resultant two don't have much in between them other than the modding the WRX is a bit more fun (and a bit more costly!)

PS - If I could live my time again I would get the STi over the WRX as I am inpatient

I don't think there has been any WRX car bashing - in this thread anyhow.

Theres been some bashing of drivers - but I'm sure they'd insist on throwing incorrect and misleading badging on their car whatever it was.

If anything, I think the only people who are bashing WRX's are those who think they need to stick STI badges on it as if the WRX isn't good enough to stand on its own; which it obviously is.

Well if they're so desperate for people to think they have an STI maybe they *should* just PX their WRX and get one? At least the badges would be on the right car then!

I will admit I'm extremely **** about this kinda stuff - but only because its a pet hate!

I reckon sticking an STi badge on a WRX is a bit daft.

My WRX has no stickers other than the little "Ecutek" sticker that Andy F gave me after he remapped my car - that sits next to the WRX badge.

It does what it says on the tin !

Thought of putting 1.4 badges on my vRS

Had a battle with an STI - I won and felt very chuffed - until I found it was a rebadged WRX

Quite wrong actually Varboy. The Type UK STi is completely different to a WRX...

Either way, this is a good deal more engine than that of the 225bhp standard WRX model - but dont be fooled into thinking that the power increase has been achieved by merely plugging in a more aggressive engine management chip or a bucket-sized turbocharger. Nearly 80% of the STis all-alloy powerplant is unique.

The piston head has been reshaped to form tougher semi-closed-deck cylinder blocks. Screw-in conrods and forged pistons combine with shimless valve lifters, sodium-filled exhaust valves and hollow valve intakes. Every moving part is either stronger, lighter or both. This reduces inertia and gives the engine a manic free-revving feel thats missing from the standard WRX.

A larger intercooler and air intake help keep things from meltdown. A drivers control centre differential (DCCD) is fitted as standard to the Type UK and its an interesting gadget. Operated via a switch mounted adjacent to the handbrake, the DCCD allows the driver to manually adjust the front/rear torque split, changing the handling balance of the car to suit a particular condition. When the ignition is switched off, the system reverts to an automatic setting.

The addition of a yaw-rate sensor and a front helical limited slip-differential reduces the amount of torque steer under hard acceleration and improves driver confidence when cornering. The suspension has been heavily revised with virtually every component changed, from mounts to front and rear links, springs, dampers and anti roll bars. The caster angle has been raised and the rear track and wheelbase altered as well to offer more stable straightline running yet retaining sharp turn-in. Even the front axle hub units and housings have been refettled while the steering gearbox has been remounted to offer more precision and better feedback.
Unless 80% difference is almost nothing.

Agreed on the WRX vs STi badging thing though... a WRX should be proud to be a WRX.. it shows the owner made a choice for a little more 'everyday' usability rather than outright performance, and the WRX is a far better 'everyday' car than the STi.

BTW: I have a MY05 STi, friend has MY06 WRX and my STi has no advantages over his in the drive to work, since we can only sit in traffic at the same speed!

^^^ there aren't huge amount of differences in the engines between later model WRXs and STis, trust me, or do your homework

I wouldn't make such a potentially controversial claim if I didn't know it to be true

Should have bought an STi in the first place

Guy at work has done the STi lookalike to his WRX bug-eye.
Spent a fortune changing headlights, grill, alloys, bonnet scoop, and all the STi stickers and badges.

I've told him never to take it to a Subaru meet, he'll get ripped to shreds, and going from the comments above I'm right.

My 2 pence - although I dont see the point in rebadging a standard WRX as an STi, its up to the individual what they have on their car. Im actually planning to take all the STi badges off my car because pink and black just doesnt look right to me.

Mine has no genuine Sti parts and no Sti badges.

I deliberately left the old WRX sticker on it. Adds to the stealth factor as most will think "oh there goes one of those old £2k imports"

Slightly off track but... What gets me is when sport owners make it look like the turbo model, when it soooooooo isn't. OK not everybody can get/afford the turbo models but live with it and wait till you can that gains more respect in my eyes.
