I was booked doing 90 on the A45, coppers did the typical 'good cop, bad cop' routine. The driver (traffic cops btw) took a real interest in the car (old WRX at the time) whereas the passenger was just cold as ice etc.

A subsequent chat with a friend (also a copper) told me the passenger is renowned for being a w@nker and gets off on nicking other coppers... it all depends on luck or lack of it!

go and get a good radar detector and keep your foot off the gas on motorways etc... time and a place etc

Was showing off my modded MK1 Golf GTI to a mate, this thing was 170 BHP and was just run in, booted it down a local dual carriageway, hadnt noticed the Police Rover behind, got it up to 90 Saw plod started braking, pulled over, got bollocking, apparently the Vascar hadnt loced on to get a speed because I was accellerating and then deceleration therefore I got away with it, wasnt to pleasant about it, he had a Tache as well !

Doing a 12-car (small, approved navigational rally on public roads at night for those who wondered ) a few years back in my old Mexico. Spotted an dark blue Mk4 Escort (was a while ago) sitting down a slot on the left, figured it was dibble and clocked him pulling out behind. Backed off, and made a mental note not to hang the tail everywhere as usual and led him a merry route round the lanes while we followed the prescribed route (lots of loops and stuff). Eventually he must have got bored and flashed us, which I ignored - unmarked so could have been anyone and I didn't want to stop in case we lost too much time. Got to a T junction and he flashed again so thought I better stop.

Dibble gets out, "understand you not stopping sir, unmarked car etc etc", me thinking, "yeah right clocked you miles back". The usual "is this your car?" and checks tax. Then comes up with "bit of classic this sir" indicating the Escort, "thought you'd have been taking it easy". I just smiled, said I had been and left. Made the next TC on time too if I remember correctly.

Happy days....

any police vehicle can have it's speedo calibrated on a rolling road. most traffic garages have them to regularly calibrate traffic vehicles, the other way is just to gatso the police vehicle at set speeds using the vehicle speedo and then note the gatso readings, by a process of deduction they can work out your speed!

Hey David_Wallis,

Have you tried the Sherburn Bypass? After a few dry runs, on a early morning it's a good place to test the car

LOL!

Lots of great stories!!

Any time I've ever been stopped I've been nicked. Conclusion: Timbo is either extremely careless or extremely unlucky!!! (probably the former unfortunately)

The only time I did get stopped and got off with a warning was on the M4 late at night heading back to Newbury in my company Rover 218 Diesel (yes it could go fast enough to get nicked provided you never slow down....)

Cops were in an unmarked Rover 800 and when I pulled up I got out (always a good idea I find...) and was spoken to by a dead ringer for Stephen Fry!!! I was desperatley trying not to pi55 myself laughing as the guy told me I'd averaged 89mph and they couldn't be bothered to nick anyone under 90....

...best escapade was about ten years ago when I had a Vauxhall Belmont 2.0i and was late home from work having promised the now ex Mrs Timbo that I'd be home at six to kiss the kids....

....got very fed up with mile long slow queue in lane three of the M4 with both other lanes empty as far as the eye could see so promptly undertook said mile of traffic in lane 1 (naughty I know but so frustrating...)

Having passed the offending German tourist sat in lane 3 at 65, I booted it homewards at about 115, came upon the back of the next queue and promptly flashed past maintaing about 110.

Was so enjoying myself blasting past the plebs I forgot where I was and nearly missed my exit and had to launch across the three lanes to the off ramp (I'm not proud of this you realise...) at about 90 mph, slammed on the brakes, changed down to fourth, to third, to second, indicated right at the roundabout, checked my mirror - POLICE CAR screaming down the ramp after me!!!!!!

****!!! Brains now in neutral, overwhelmed by blind panic!!!

Raced round the roundabout which luckily has a big embankment on it and they couldn't see where I was going, but roundabout has only one other exit.....couldn't go down there....back on the M4 t'other way?....twenty miles in the wrong direction....keep going round, maybe they weren't really after me.....back round to the first exit, no sign of Mr Plod so keep going, back round under the M4 to where I was originally going....

POLICE CAR now reversing at speed towards me from the direction I wanted to go, every light on and a few I'd never noticed!!!!

Panic continues...another 180 round the roundabout and in desperation took on ramp back onto M4 in the direction I'd been going originally. Eyes now firmly fixed on mirror and travelling at exactly 69.5 miles per hour I crawled all the way to Newbury, took the A4 back to Hungerford where I lived, fully expecting roadblocks, helicopters, SWAT teams......

....got home, didn't sleep, waiting for knock on the door. They must have got the license plate surely? Idiot!! it's a company car. They won't be able to get hold of my employer 'til tomorrow....

....next day I turned up at work and sure enough, there's a police Panda car in the car park. I go sheepishly to my desk and try to
make like nothing's happened.

"Hey Timbo, did you hear about Alan's car?"
"No what.?"
"Was working late last night and someone nicked his wheels and left the car on bricks in the car park. Police are here now!"

Nearly passed out with relief!! I never did hear any more about it, the only time I ran from the law..........

Timbo - reminds me of a scary incident I had in my younger days. Was out being norty on the bike one fine Sunday morning. I stopped for petrol into the regular station we used and my mates went on. Caning it to catch up, went past an unmarked car at at least 140 (yards per hour you understand). Just realised as I was passing him and was was well away down the road before I could think it out. Took left right left right, pulled into a field and hid behind a tree for 4 hours, wondering if they got my plate. Got home to find a panda car sitting in the drive. knees turned to jelly - the guy came over and said Is this your bike
Me: Yep
Himid you get petrol this morning in blah de blah
Me: Yep
Him: The owner would like to know if you didn't pay on purpose or by accident
Me: DOH!!!
Him: If you could nip over and pay it now there should be no problem.... See Ya

I was in Ireland in feb this year - just coming out of a
small village and the road opens up into a nice long straight
one problem its a 30 then a 40 then 60 all in quite a short space
The Garda had set up a speed trap in the 30 zone
He was alright though just had a big grin on his face and said you were doing well to get up to sixty in such a short time - my first ticket ever....next day coming back through the same village slowed
down along the straight 60 40 30 saw the police waiting in the same spot...... out the otherside of the village nice bit of open road with some sweeping bends cruised past some slower trafic upto about 90 .....blue flashing light in my rear view mirror....second speeding ticket ever....forward 6 months same village radar detector went mental....not a beep anywhere else

Thank god they don't have a points system ..yet!
