Personally, I'd ban passengers, far more likely to distract you than a mobile, hot dog, coke and a ciggie... not simultaneously, like...
In some ways I'd welcome some sort of approval for in-car stuff but I would NOT trust beaurocrats to set the standards properly.

You're on the phone, something happens in front of you and you need full control, you can drop the phone.
You're smoking a ***, something happens in front of you and you need full control, you can't drop the *** without setting fire to your car. So you're trying to steer, change gear and keep hold of a flimsy incendiary device to avoid being burnt.
Which is more dangerous? It's so obvious I'm incredulous anyone can defend it.
Then there's the unpleasant ash out of the window as obviously no cars fit ashtrays anymore . Or more likely people know how unpleasant cars full of stale ash and butts are so selfishly infect it on everyone else instead. Plus the danger of throwing burning butts **** out of the window in the path of motorbikes with open visors or jackets. Or lit butts getting wedged in the front of following cars. I could go on and on (oh I have......) Ban it

Major hazzard my back side, i could tell from your very first post you were one of the anti smoking brigade, fair enough the no smoking in public thing i dont agree with it but live by it, if we choose to smoke in our cars thats our buisness not any of yours, how can you compare smoking to using a phone in your car is just unbelievable, and no dropping a *** dosent set fire to your car as ive done it a few times and my car hasnt burned down or even started smouldering for that matter, people are in far more control of there car than when they are if there talking on a phone, i fully agree with the ban on mobiles but to suggest even banning smoking in cars is just utter p1$h
Dave
PS: in real life they should just use 'without due care and attention' but that would mean policemen on the streets .....

There's a big difference between 'making progress via lane 2', and 'undertaking'....
The ******* that sit on your rear bumper, swerve into the middle to try and gain 15 metres of road should be dragged from their cars and shot on the hard shoulder.

What would my HGV do if a car driver sits in middle lane doing 50mph, deliveries would be late, never mind 50 mile tail backs, We undertake we have too, even undertook PC Jobsworth

But would any of you do any of the things mentioned whist taking your test?
No?
Oh I wonder why?
Perhaps because it's not such a good idea when you are driving.

In my unbiased opinion I believe smoking whilst driving is nowhere near as bad as using a phone. As previously mentioned the actual smoking takes no concentration at all. Its the obtaining/lighting cig that is the dangerous bit. I have previously lit cigs for mates while they were driving and handed it over to avoid any mishaps.
Like ACID says where do you draw the line ? Having a handsfree phone conversation takes away your concentration apparently. What about talking to a passenger, listening to your favourite music, listening to sat nav instructions etc. etc. It would get ridicolous !
