Seriously though, does anyone still use 800x600?
I've had a 19" CRT since 1999 and before that was a 17" CRT that ran 1024x768. Just exactly how far back in time do we have to go to cater for aging PCs running low resolutions?
I don't think there even any laptops this side of the milenium that run a lower resolution than 1024x768, excepting palmtops, of course.

Wonder Wagon. Sorry no
DW, and those saving me a bit of explanation time.. thank you very much indeed for your support
For those who don't like the width. I've tried to explain everything as best I can, we haven't done this to spite you. There are valid reasons, and I'm sure you'd rather we spent our time solving any real problems than spend it getting into a debate about why and what, etc.
We really do appreciate your comments, and the fact that overwhelming majority (of the people who don't like the format) have actively posted to say "don't like it, but sure, I'll give it a go and see if I get used to it". This means the world to us, and to be honest, will incentivise us to listen more carefully and place more urgency on looking into a solution. More aggressive / arrogant comments have the oposite affect.
At the absolute worst. The minute proportion of people who literally cannot survive while it is in this width will either have to a) put up with it, or b) not use scoobynet. Just for a month. After this, if you are absolutely sure you can't bear it any longer, and you are in the company of a significant number of other members, then we'll find a solution.
Please forgive me if I don't respond to any more comments regarding the fixed width, as I'm going to focus on more urgent matters now and come back to this in a couple of weeks.
Everyone Feel free to point people to this post.

Just a comment - the page rendering by FF2 is a bit annoying as mentioned by some. Long pages especially, they render the content on the right and then it "jumps" in to the middle. Just FF doing it's quick display rather than download the whole thing first thing.
On ie, the little icons could do with a size definition as they cause the IE center bit to move as they come down and the browser finds they are actually quite small.
Very minor things and if that's all that comes up, it must be OK otherwise!
Good work and don't envy you at all, it's much easier sitting here critising

Been browsing SN for a few hours, and love the new look, apart from, and you all know what's coming, the width! Its driving me nuts,
BUT I will shut up and give it a month to see if it grows on me.
Well done to all the team that made this possible, overall a bloody brilliant job!

Forgot to say after my whinge about the width... The blogs are a great idea. Top names with some interesting things to say(hopefully). Am looking forward greatly to reading some interesting articles. As mentioned above maybe rss feeds in the future?
The rest of the site looks great too, although if you are looking for critisism (unlikely at this stage) I would say I think the front page is too cluttered. Lots of good info but just too busy. Does scooby shoot out really need to banner adverts?
Also I would prefer it without the most recent post bit and spread the page out some more. I would rather just click on the forum button and read the top few posts rather than click on the most recent bit. That way I am choosing which posts because you get the pop up preview and then just clicking back to see the other posts. It seems to be a bit unnecessary and uses up too much space.
Don't take it as a slagging because I like the feel of the new site but you asked for comments so there you go!

I did...
I think you need to see a doctor Shaun! if you have had this enter from the right style of page refresh for two months, and think its ok, then you need urgent medical help. I think you may be suffering from DBPP, its an often seen complaint from people who use powerpoint, and think slides, fades and wipes are the way to go, (they arn't btw)
Yopu could also have an inner ear condition, which makes you think everything moves around from right to left... (again it dosent), just try opposite lock, it lets the ears and vision recentre
I can survive (bearly) the month with the 14" monitor syndrome, (but you can expect the first complaint on feb 27th
As an aside, and it may be of use, are you using embedded or heavily macro'd pages... whatever format you are using for the delivery method, it loads about a quater to half of a page, then the pc hangs whilst it deals with the embedded? or other stuff before continuing the refresh.. i cant scroll through a thread for the same reason.
PS ever seen the film the jerk? his great invention got him sued

wonder if i can get a claim for motion sickness against SN

Regarding the width issue could you not make the grey bit (where we have our username) on the left less wide leaving more space for posts. You could leave the overall borders the same, but this would make it less of a "tennis match" reading long posts.
Limit people's signatures to just a few words. Some are an essay themselves. If you look at mine there's approx 1.5cm after the word "linconshire" and the edge which is wasted space.

It isn't as fixed as it looks... I dunno how this screenshot will come out but it does show that the thread browsing (which is 99.99% of what I do on Scoobynet) can be forced to be normal width even though the header is in squishyvision... not neat but effective.

I agree that the front page benefits from the makeover, but my bookmark is for the forums...

It's a side effect of telling Firefox to keep images at their original width. Described by AndyC_772 in this thread: https://www.scoobynet.com/photograph...g-problem.html
as a solution to the resizing of all the 800-wide pictures in the Photography section.
In this case the thread contains an image (a screenshot from Fuzz) that is much wider than the fixed width, so the dynamic part of the thread display is made that wide to avoid resizing the image. The header stays the same, hence the discontinuity.
Since the browser is able to make the thread that wide (because the UserContent.css tells it to) it gives me hope that the fixed width isn't an insurmountable obstacle. (Just stick a rather wide 1-pixel-high image in there

Right..
100% for everyone here who said "I don't like the fixed width, but we'll do what you ask and give it a go" ...
We've added and option in you control panel :
Edit Options
Scroll to the bottom, and you should see an option there which you can change to full screen.
Now, it isn't going to look pretty, but if you're finding it a struggle to get used to, at least this will get you back to widescreen.
THANK YOU to everyone who was willing to put up with it and do as we asked.

Thankyou, thank you, thank you for giving us back full screen mode. Ahh...that's much better, I was starting to feel claustrophobic with the fixed width. Now if there was something you could do about the size of the images in the photo forum (I know, winge, winge!) to say 800 pixels wide, I'd make a donation to ScoobyNet.

No grudge coming across there at all...
Thanks Shaun, the new makeover does look good - honest! People (me included!) are always going to focus on the things they don't like rather than the ones they do, but don't let it get you down. I've not seen anyone complaining about the makeover itself, and if I were you I'd count that as a major result!
(Now, if you could only make that lovely new option affect the image resize tag too, for those of us who are stuck using IE at work...
)ps. 10,000 posts, woohoo!
Now that looks good !
Everything back to the normal width, and keeping a nice neat header. Looks very professional to me, compared to the rather dated narrow version. The screen updates don't jump all over the place any more, it is just a lot slicker to use and view.
Thank you Shaun !
