How patronising - "grown out of"?

Who's to say we are right - your sole reason for existence from an evolutionary viewpoint is to procreate.

I agree absolutely with what you say Rannoch, it is terrible to see how people suffer in parts of the world. We are very lucky to have been born in a more civilised place with a good standard of living.

Those who feel they have to post comments such as "sentimental claptrap" really are beyond the pale and should be heartily ashamed of themselves!

I like the thought that inviting muslims to your home makes you special
My home is my castle, not a chuffin hostel
As for the pics, very gloomy... When I see them, I start singing Ren and Stimpys timeless masterpiece 'Happy Happy Joy Joy' to wash away the mental misery

Some excellent pics there by the way irrespective of their moral or political standpoint

And how does a phone help people who are starving? It's also not necessarily a bad thing either.

As I said earlier, it will never happen. You can't change opinions or cultures overnight, or even across generations.
Kiwi,

I did say that these things were neither good nor bad, they were perspectives on the lives we lead.

I think the economic disparity is particularly telling as 'in theory' a small change in the west can make a huge difference in the developing world.

Of course it is not practical or realistic at a macro level, I never said it was. However at a micro level it can make a difference. And if I can personally only support ONE LIFE to make a difference then it is worth doing something. That one life could be my son or your son.

At that level all this political rubbish goes away.

I will also put my money where my mouth is - see post following shortly.

Rannoch

Matters not *what you do* in your life, its like a snail or a slug.. you leave a trail in your wake... a trail that affects the planet as a whole, not some starving kid in Ethiopia or wherever. Im not apportioning blame on you , but you *are* just like the rest of us, part of the problem. We can all 'do our bit' by recycling ect as the Government would like us to , but surely its too little too late? we've raped this planet now for far too long, over the last couple of centuries, we've increased deforestation , increased mining for fossil fuel to the point theres very little left.

Point *WAS* Mr Rannoch that we have just SPED UP the time between naturally occuring Ice Ages with the stuff we now do daily without even thinking of the impact .

Great and moving images. Any photogrpaher that has worked for the Magnum agency is absolutely top of their field. Redirection

But I would say two things. Firstly, the West should stop meddling in the affairs of Africa, Asia, the Middle East etc. We don't understand their culture. They don't believe in democracy. Their life values are very different. We only make things worse (often for selfish reasons).

Secondly, if we really cared that much about the plight of the Third World, it would be on the top of every political agenda and we would rush policies into action. But we don't. We don't actually care when it comes to doing anything really substantial.

There is a strong argument that charity giving is actually counter productive. I would much rather pay a bit more in income tax than keep succumming to moral blackmail in every other newspaper ad or piece junk mail through the door.

I give to charity, buy a poppy etc, my mother sponsors a donkey. Been doing it for decades, and it's made no significant difference that I can see. And neither has Sir Bob despite a great deal of sincere and hard work. I also find photos of fat African leaders, strutting in their military splendour puffing on big cigars in big limos etc, far more offenseive that those posted at the top of this thread.

Richard.
