What a good thread (apart from the stupid "petrol is best" comments). I think Vauxhall have done a cracking job with the new Astra - it looks great, goes well, is great value and well built. If you can get 50mpg then all the better. If you want my two penneth (you're going to get it even if you don't) I would get a standard car, change the suspension (if you still want to drive quickly) and then think about the engine. You may well find that you enjoy revving the pants off it while remaining at legal speeds.

Blueblaster - Top end petrols and diesel Designs and SRIs are lowered 10mm as standard (it makes a big difference), have a sport button that actually does something and have bigger disks plus come with proper tyres.

For me to go from VW for years to Vauxhall was a fairly dramatic leap but it's one of those cars you can really blast around in - The handling is very good, it's well made and apart from the slightly iffy dash, is nice to sit in.

I very rarely get over 40mpg though - My poor Astra gets ragged mercilessly!

It does sound like the Astra is a lot sportier than my Civic. Given how much I am enjoying saving money on petrol I would probably go for the cheaper Astra next time, although I am very happy with the Civic and will keep it a long time.

The last time I checked there were no Formula One or World Rally Championship teams that had to worry about the cost of petrol. Also, both of those racing formats are basically short sprints - hardly representative of modern day-to-day motoring. Audi (much to Audilover's glee) have been wiping the floor in endurance racing with their diesel racer. That is much more relevant.

Also, Subaru not bringing out a diesel STI is massively instrumental in their slide down the sales charts.

Extreme power outputs, high rev limits and great engine noise are the strengths of petrol engines. Given you can't use all this power 99% of the time you are paying an awful lot of money for an engine note.

No one here is suggesting that we should all drive around in piles of junk to save money. What we are saying is that in the real world of heavy traffic, high petrol prices and generally high cost of living, you can have a really nice car and save £250 per month by having a diesel engine in it.

I actually bought a diesel for the torque and low emissions.
Good mpg is a bonus but it honestly wasn't a big issue.
The longer range between fuel stops is very handy though.

Even Evo mag are starting to say "diesel like low range torque" and similar.

I've heard Subaru are in the process of developing a flat four diesel.

You see, this is what happens when muppets venture into something a bit closer to reality than the muppet forum

Mikey - crawl back under your rock

Those AWD "rally slags" you drive (drove) are no closer to F1 or WR cars than a diesel fiesta is you ****.

And as for "subaru marketing" roflmo - I'm guessing you fell for it hook line and sinker when you bought your "road going rally rep"

Good points all well presented

Lets deal with them one at a time shall we

What's so unreal about the muppet forum, Is it because you require an ability to exhibit social skills every now and again and be able to converse without calling people a ****. Is having a sense of humour also an un real "thing" to you?

Crawl back under my rock!! Well Well, lets have a look at this one shall we I have never come out from under it to be fair, certainly this thread could hardly be called "original" or "fresh" or "Ground breaking".
Tell you what it is, it's same crap, different names.
Sorry for having been here and done this and deciding to have a bit of fun

Finally, hook line & sinker........ I bought a fast and relatively rare car that was good value for money. I think it was about 2 years after buying it, I decided to be interested in Rallying.
Now Bugger off and leave me alone, I have BTCC tickets to source

Thanks for the interaction

If you think your responses in this thread to a perfectly valid question represent in any way "an exhibition of social skills" you are somewhat wide of the mark Mikey.

Incredulous - someone who spends all day in the muppet forum complaining that a thread in another forum isn't "original, fresh, or ground breaking" Do you need reminded that "muppets" contains thousands of threads on the same old ****?

IIRC, you're the one who "buggered in" and posted a load of crap on this thread

You're welcome and good luck with your tickets

It also helps if you are able to construct a coherent and accurately punctuated sentence.

And there we have it............. one of the main reasons that I stay in the Muppet Forum.

You guys just don't get it. The craving to always be better than the other guy, the need to be "the correct one" makes some of you behave like spoilt brats. It's laughable.

Now argue if you need to, it's what you log on for it seems, but you should try the funnier side of scoobynet every now and again and realise you ain't no better than the guy next to you! You don't know best all the time. Relax and have fun.

Now about these god awful Diesels............

Cheers

Did someone just fart

lol

Its not about being "better than the next guy" - are you lot so over sensitive and shrouded in cotton wool that you can't take a bit of "attitude?"

There is a huge difference between trying to be "better than the next guy" and calling **** exactly what it is - ****

How you cope in the real world is beyond me

Actually, on second thoughts it's not - you don't cope, do you? thats why you seemingly spend your entire lives posting drivel on an internet BBS with in some alternate "fluffy" reality

can i just say

I drive an astra diesel estate 150, with a DTUK crd2, PAH i hear you say....

which on the rollers gives 201bhp and 313lb's and with the new induction kit that's been tested, a 150 diesel with dtuk chip gives 210bhp.

I leave type r'sk, golf gti's and bmw320 coupes standing, and even an audi 2.7 turbo couldnt beat me (i didn't thrash him) but i did beat him.

here is the car

and for those of you still thinking pah, see a sport hatch diesel on the strip at santa pod here (6meg) against strangley enough an escort

ftp://lan-uk.derwentside.net/spankescort.wmv

now these aren't 888's but the power is very similar, we just don't have their brakes and suspention setup.
