Its your money and you have indeed seen the car and driven it too so its not my place to say buy it or not but its not worth the asking price. A quick browse in this forsale section and auto trader would prove that.

Adam, I just wanted to add a comment about your logic of what your Lexus owes you against what its worth:
If you use your logic when it comes to selling this sti (assuming you go ahead and buy it) then not taking into count depreciation/extra miles, you're saying that the sti will owe you about 5-5.2k
Thats not a bad deal for the next owner is it?
Don't quote what your Lexus 'owes' you to anyone else will ya!!! You never know where potential buyers may come from
Suppose this deal falls through and you take advice from guys on here and use autotrader. Maybe buyers will know someone on SN and phone you offering 4 grand, then you're stuffed!!!
Just thought you could bear it in mind thats all
As for the sti..... maybe start another thread quickly asking if anyones got a third party warranty that covers all important things. That way you could atempt to have the cost reduced from the price of the car
Best of luck

Oh and to add about reliability.
I had an sti5 type R and it had a big end failure after 34k miles.
I lost faith after the rebuild (only psycologically, not coz it was a dodgy job) and sold it.
Rebuild came out of my pocket and was 2 grand
and that was with standard bits, nothing uprated

Just that I had an RAC one on a beemer a few years back.
Ask a question in general, someone will always be able to help on SN

FWIW Mine was 500 quid for a year on a Z3M roadster but you may need some special extras to cover turbo, DCCD (on sti4

Ah, the good old insurance backed third party warranties. Not worth a w@nk I'm afraid, I'd never have another. If this bloke is a dealer then he has to give you 3 months warranty anyway by law doesn't he?
If he's being funny about the deposit now, I wouldn't fancy my chances in taking the car back if something was wrong with it within those 3 months.

After I explained, they said that it was part of the engine so it was covered, but if I had needed to claim, they could equally have said it was a 'specific extra to certain models' as their leaflet mentioned and therefore I wouldn't have been covered when push came to shove.
Hmmmm

Just say that you have read up on the impreza models, and that example seems massively over priced. Especially when there is no warrenty. If the car is so straight, why won't he offer you one?
At the end of the day, he hasn't got to give you the deposit back, but if he has got so many people interested in it like he said on the phone to me, then he should have no problem giving you your money back.

I'll be very surprised if you get your money back though fella

Just use the advice and ask questions about the next one you see like you did this time

Oh and try and find out exactly how much your Lexus is 'trade' so you have an idea whether the next dealer is knocking you... Assuming you don't attempt to sell private.

They may knock you down to 5.5k for yours but you'll be in the same boat as now without so much worry..... and probably a fair bit of warranty too.
Its just a thought mate. I'd certainly try a private sale first as you don't rely on your current car everyday. You're in a very envious position as you can afford to have nothing while searching for the perfect car. I've have to buy my next car before selling my current in the past and boy does that strain things

Regardless of price, if you are in the market for a Scoob then the V5 front end is so much nicer than the V4
