Hints on removing the Power Steering pulley on a MY03 WRX

1. Undo the two 10mm cover fixings.
2. Lift the corner to release cover & swivel it out the way around the throttle cable.


3. Spray some "Plus Gas" or "WD40" on the shaft & nut to be soaking in.
4. Slacken the two 12mm bolts holding the alternator & turn the adjuster anti clockwise to slacken the belt enough to remove.


5. Place a short extension bar through the pulley aperture & rest it on the ledge of the pump mounting bracket.
6. Use a 19mm ring spanner to undo the pulley nut whilst bracing the extension bar against the ledge to gain leverage & stop the pulley turning.


7. Remove the nut & slide the pulley off the splined shaft.
8. To reassemble reverse the above not forgetting to re-tension the belt.
9. Run the engine & check the belt runs true on the pulleys,adjust if necessary.

The other two pulleys

The alternator pulley is held on by a 24mm nut but has no openings to lock it against anything. Don't be tempted to poke something inside the alternator as you will damage it.

I had a new alternator fitted not long ago at a Subaru dealer & you can see four sets of clamp marks equally spaced around the edge of the pulley. This is where they used something to hold the pulley whist it was undone.


The crank pulley has a 22mm nut & it can be undone by putting the car in 5th gear & putting the handbrake on to hold it. Foot brake can be used if needed as well.

Busy busy always busy. Picked up BatFinks STi top mount on Sat at the Posers as well. So that's another little job to do.

I just hope the alternator nut isn't as tight as the nut on the power steering cos there is nothing to get hold of on the alternator. I may try & make up a clamp of some sort.

Sorry mark,

Best way to get that off is use the 8mm holes in the stock pulley ... either by sticking two 8mm small pieces off bar in the holes, then using a another piece of metal to wedge in between them and holding that bit when undoing it with the socket.... I'll email a pic of what I mean _ Not that it's any good to you now

Or of course nick a crank pulley tool holder...

Sorry Chris my post was thinking ahead to when I do have to do the crank pulley. Your bar through the holes sounds good.

I think the alternator is going to be the hardest as it has no holes in the pulley or shaft.And you can't poke anything in the fan blades or internals as it will **** the coil windings. I have a few ideas for clamps.

But this is the funniest thing ive read in ages... Its a bit of underhood jewelery and nothing else.

In no way whatsoever will this change your throttle response. Throttle resonse is goverened by the engine and its design spec.
