So they are brighter than dipped beam, therefore driving with them on in normal conditions is more likely to dazzle an oncoming driver than just regular dipped beam.
I'm drawing a distinction between front and rear lights here.
Yes, huge difference in brightness between rear lights and rear fogs.
Huge difference in brightness between front fogs and dipped headlights ?
~ I think not. Maybe you would expect it, but there's not a great deal to choose between the two. When driving in fog, you can barely see vehicles with no rear fogs on, but wehther using headlamps or headlamps and front fogs, you can generally see oncoming vehicles ok either way.
Anyway, would a compulsory order to replace the bulb have been more appropriate - "Yes".

Good point from the copper previously about them killing though, bet there are lots of cases like that .
I don't know the full story, but as far as I'm concerned coppers should be pulling people over for bad driving of all sorts (incorrect use of lights, indicators and all of it). But, they should be advising the motorists rather than dishing out fines etc. Having said that, most coppers round my way (not most traffic ones though) can't even indicate so what sort of example are they setting?
Oh, and I don't generally use my front fogs even when it's really foggy as they're pretty poor. I prefer high beam with the adjuster turned right down, but that's another topic I guess...

The round lights on uk cars, they aren't that bright at all, are these fogs or 'driving' lights? I never have them on before anyone starts

They're crap compared to the P1lights.
I spoke to Waif earlier, he said you were selling the Impreza?

I hate people driving with foglights on ..... as they dazzle and soooo many people just think it's cool. The police don't have a crystal ball and get told every excuse under the sun. It is not possible to work out who is really being honest and who is not ...... thus the ticket!
The simple answer would have been to replace the headlight when it went. A £30 fine may mean you do it next time rather than leaving it until it is easier to replace ....

AFAIK front fogs have no alignment parameters for an MOT, unlike headlights, and can therefore potentially point anywhere. (Fiat Punto anyone?)
It's quite easy really...
Fog lights. There's a small clue in the name.
Same goes for ***** that stick their rear ones on as soon as it starts to drizzle, then forget about them for 6 months

which ever way its looked at:
offence comitted, ticket issued
get over it.
I have had loads of tickets during my time usually for the motorbike but I dont winge and whine about it I just pay the ticket.
i know i'm doing wrong so its my fault. That's it.
Admitting the bulb had gone a few days earlier is the downfall.

Anyway mate, looks like you stirred up the FOG LIGHT debate.
Regards the ticket, write a letter explaining the situation to the Chief Constable of the force in question (go to the top, it will find its way down the pecking order. dont worry) and that you were going to get it fixed the next day. Also say that you dont think it is quite right that you were being used as a training exercise when you actually know someone who was just given a warning and the fact that you were only using the said lights due to safety.
I am 95% certain you will be let off with a caution.
Worked for me, with phone use (before everyone starts, this was before all the new rules) and number plate issues. Hard hat put on.
So many people just like to call people on here, yet they just want advice.
Good Luck mate, write that letter you have nothing to lose, Put your phone number on it, you may get a call. I did, twice.

Yep 2 minute job to nip to Halfrauds buy the bulb of your choice and fit it in your lunch hour or by torch when you get home, or in the garage under strip light.
I think it's great to see the police finally fining people for using their foglights when its not foggy. The thread starter may feel unlucky in being caught and fined and claims he would have replaced the bulb at the weekend. I take it it is now done as it's going dark on Sunday afternoon now? Not casting aspursions but could it be one of those "I'll fix it tomorrow" stories that could have gone on for weeks?
Anyhoo... More fines for non foggy fog light usage please! Maybe then I wont have to full beam those driving towards me with them on, not use my rear one when being followed by a car with them on...

Must confess rear foglights being used when it's not necessary really annoys me. I've sometimes overtaken the folk and stuck mine on for 10 secs to let them know they have their rear fogs on !!

people driving with fog lights on dont really bother me at all, i do it on dark roads, as ther are a lot of country lanes where i live. But, when an oncoming car appraches, there off, as i know, for some reason, (probably due to the fact there eyesight is crap and there easily distracted) it annoys people.
Now, moving on a little, the penalty was slightly harsh due to the circumstances, but, like said, if this copper pulls people alot for fog lights on, hes probably heard every excuse under the sun. 1 jealous your whippersnapper in a pig suit, well mate, you never stood a chance, shame, but thats a fact.
what does the guy get who is coming down a narroww country lane with wrongly adjusted head lights, you cant see for a few seconds and clip a curb, its happened to me, road i didnt know, he or she was flying, narrow road, CRUNCH.
Could have been a wall, or anything, these are the ones that get away with it EVERY time, headlights working, looks ok to them, unaware to them, its highly dangerous
OH, and for the record, fogs are pointed at the ground, thats the whole idea of them, driving lamps are positioned further up to AID the head lights.
so all you foglight HATERS, get over it and find a hobby will you, you must be real uptight to get so annoyed by this, go get laid or something will you
rant over

Cant you just tell the people who have their fog lights on when not required. all the "they dont dazzle" brigade"... *****
They dont actually light up the road significantly so the people who have them on just do it because they think it looks cool (or forget).
Just total ****.
Let then try and defend it, they cant its just pointless.
Hope the police stop them all and fine them all and give them points.....and put their FOG lights out with a spanner.
As i said ***** the lot of them.

Stuck my front fogs on tonight - don't fret girls, the car was parked outside a door, I'm certain no-one was blinded !
Anyway, I had a quick walk round the car and looked at it at driver's height, then low down to simulate "coming over the brow of a hill".
The result ? They don't dazzle ! End of.
